Had the Giants cut Jones after 2021, who would have been QB1 in 2022, 2023 and today? Recall that the only QB drafted in Round 1 in 2022 was Kenny Pickett (Steelers at 20), and the next one drafted was Desmond Ridder in Round 3. Nobody drafted Brock Purdy until, well, we all know. Yes, I recall that some (many?) here were calling for the Giants to dump Jones back then. What I don't remember is what those advocates believed the plan should have been had they done that.
Of course, had the Giants cut him then we wouldn't be paying him what we are paying him now. A good outcome obviously. But would we be out of QB hell? Would we have given up already on whoever was our 2022 QB1? Would we have had a much worse 2022 (because our 2022 QB wasn't Jones) so as to put us in position to take a QB at the top of the 2023 draft, and picked Stroud rather than, say, Young or Levis or Richardson? Would we be happy with any one of them? And how well would we have used the money not being spent on Daniel Jones?
This year's QB class looks loads better than the 2022 class did, and based on DJ's work to date it seems safe to say there are several in the class who promise to be better in 2025 and beyond than DJ will ever be. Maybe even in 2024. Couldn't say that about the 2022 class even at the time. Or 2021 for that matter, unless you were the Jaguars picking Lawrence at No. 1.
The obvious answer is someone like Tyrod Taylor would have been the QB. Many BBI'ers expected Taylor to be starting in 2022 when we signed him.
He's off the books now.
Jones is not.
Mayfield
Kirk Cousins
Geno Smith
Jared Goff
Matthew Stafford
Id even add Derek Carr, although that remains to be seen.
They hitched their wagon to Jones after the 22 season, so he became their error. Again they had Taylor under contract and still chose Jones. So in the mind of the coach and GM Jones was better than Taylor and gave the Giants the best chance to win. There was never even any thought in 22 of putting Taylor in for Jones.
I like Jones and think he can do better with the improvement in the OL but the injuries are a real concern so I understand the push for a QB. It’s a tough spot though, we have limited cap space and 2 years of a large cap hit for Jones. I think it’s best to wait a year on the QB unless you get him at 6.
The Giants should be aiming to accrue more picks and draft a QB much more often IMV. There has to be a middle ground between top-10 pick (DJ) and UDFA (Cutlets).
Mayfield
Kirk Cousins
Geno Smith
Jared Goff
Matthew Stafford
Id even add Derek Carr, although that remains to be seen.
A swap of successful #1 overall picks in Goff/Stafford seems like a unique situation. And I agree that Carr can go either way.
Cousins has been good but being able to get a QB of that caliber as a FA is very rare.
Favre, Young, Brees and Warner are the only semi-recent (wildly) successful QBs that come to mind who started with a different team…And that’s covering a lot of years.
Tyrod Taylor would have started. Howell would have been the backup.
2023 draft would have depended on 2022.

Succeeding with guys who weren't drafted by them..

Mayfield and Smith haven’t done anything that DJ hasn’t and I’d say they were on considerably more talented teams than the Giants.

Bullshit. Geno threw for 4,300 yards and 30 TD’s 2 years ago, and Baker 4,100 yards and 28 TD’s last year. Jones has never come close to those numbers. Until he does, you can’t say “oh, he’d do it if he had better players around him”. Maybe he’s the one holding the other players back?

jones threw 24td in his rookie season.
she would be my Uncle.
: )
sorry, I couldn't resist.
Yeah, ..... what if Reggie White signed with the Giants coming out of the USFL?
I've been harping on this on so many threads. The lack of drafting of drafting QBs on this team is so unserious.

And? 24>28, and definitely >30, and it was 5 years ago. Baker took over a WINLESS, as in ZERO wins, team his rookie year, and threw for more yards and TD’s than Jones ever has. The low bar posters set for Jones is mind boggling.

IMO this is "Luke Longley." Its a road to nowhere/prayer imo. But prayer does work. But thta is all you are proposing.
What if the Qb is mediocre year one? What about your OL and other positions?
You saw what happened to Mahomes in Super Bowl without a OL. what is Brock Purdy has that same OL that cant block
How many years do you hold onto Brock Purdy becuase your oL sucks before you dump him?
And with some QB's matter what you'd they have a ceiling?
It's Fantasy Football.
