Decision time - which premium FA are you choosing? Eric on Li : mute : 3/7/2024 10:36 am like most FA classes there are about a dozen players on the market who look likely to get premium multi-year contracts (3-4 years or more). below i've compared them to UFA contracts from the last 2 offseasons and also included their projected AAV. it is my view that most roster decisions are top down so i would guess a few of these players are the giant's plan A's and in less than 1 week, 1 of them is in blue. Quote: 1. Chris Jones - entering age 30 season projected at 30m aav * 4 years (80m gtd) comparable to von miller signing in BUF for 6x120m, with 50m gtd, his year 1 cap hit was 5.2m actual contract 5x31.75m 2. Christian Wilkins - entering age 28 season projected at 25 aav * 4 years (67.5m gtd) comparable to hargave signing in SF for 4x84m, with 40m gtd, his year 1 cap hit was 6.6m actual contract 4x27.5m 3. Danielle Hunter - entering age 29 season projected at 22m aav * 3 years (40m gtd) the best recent comp is probably also Von Miller's deal in BUF, though id guess it's shorter and higher AAV actual contract 2x24.5m 4. Kendall Fuller - entering age 29 season projected at 13m * 3 years (25m gtd) comparable to bradberry last year in PHI, 3x38m with 20m gtd, his year 1 cap hit was 3m currently unsigned 5. Bryce Huff - entering age 26 season projected at 17m * 3 years (25m gtd) comparable to zach allen in DEN, 3x48m with 33 gtd, his year 1 cap hit was 6m actual contract 3x17m 6. Patrick Queen - entering age 25 season projected at 18m * 4 years (50m gtd) comparable to treamine edmunds in CHI, 4x72m, 50m gtd, his year 1 cap hit was 14.6m actual contract 3x13.6m 7. Kevin Dotson - entering age 27 season projected at 15m * 4 years (36m gtd) comparable to ben powers in DEN, 4x52m, 29m gtd, his year 1 cap hit was 5.2m actual contract 3x16m 8. Calvin Ridley - entering age 29 season projected at 18.5m * 3 years (33m gtd) comparable to christian kirk in JAX, 4x72m, 37m gtd, his year 1 cap hit was 7.5m actual contract 4x23m 9. Mike Onwenu - entering age 26 season projected at 14.5m * 4 years (33m gtd) i think his comparable is higher bc he's played a lot of RT so im taking the over on his projection big time, i think it will be closer to Mike McGlinchey 5x87m in DEN, 50m gtd, his year 1 cap hit was 6m actual contract 3x19m 10. Robert Hunt - entering age 28 season projected at 17.5m * 4 years (42m gtd) comparable to ben powers in DEN, 4x52m, 29m gtd, his year 1 cap hit was 5.2m actual contract 5x20m 11. Jonathan Greenard - entering age 27 season projected at 19m * 4 years (53m gtd) comparable to zach allen in DEN, 3x48m with 33 gtd, his year 1 cap hit was 6m actual contract 4x18.75m it is possible they add 2 but that doesn't usually work out great because the hit rate is only about 30% for free agents on this level. so while it's pretty easily doable to add 2 from a cap standpoint you are doing so at your own risk. the more prudent strategy would probably be whichever player you like best from the list above and then smaller scale signings to fill depth elsewhere. also even if they want 2 from the above list, these are guys that are going to have multiple teams bidding, most of whom will be the 13 teams with more cap space than nyg. denver added 3 of the top 13 last year, each are listed as comps above (powers, mcglinchey, allen) so it's not impossible. but that's a pretty good example of the pitfalls of spending big. a year later Allen is probably the only signing of the 3 that looks good. so who's your guy? |

And I am a pro Waller guy.
And I am a pro Waller guy.
If he retires is Fuller in play? That would be nice.
Agree, this!
-Singletary was a solid addition in my book. He's inexpensive, healthy, and has solid production. I'm totally fine with letting Barkley go.
-Eluemunor is a nice value add that helps cover the Neal liability since he can play multiple spots.
-Brian Burns makes this a top DL, finally. It is a big swing but I like it. I also like Ojulari coming off the bench.
-They got blocking TEs and punt returners. Not flashy but I'm glad it is taken care of.
Runyan seemed like the most questionable move, but the guard market went haywire. He has good pass blocking metrics so hopefully that helps.
They need to add a safety and corner, I don't think Jalen Mills is enough, but he was a minimum deal and the market will just keep going down. Same goes for a DT, losing Leonard Williams and A'Shawn Robinson in one go needs to be addressed. This is a WR draft, if they don't take one at #6 they really need to hit in the 2nd.

Rather have traded a sixth rounder for Fields
Agree, this!
elumeanor's $7m + cutting waller's 10.5m this year (16m aav) would have paid for one of the top OL.
i dont have any strong opinion on elumuenor either way. 7m is fair for a flexible starting OL. it could end up being the better value.
just saying Thomas-Runyan-JMS-Onwenu-Neal may have been worth a stretch.

Everyone probably agrees but maybe Chicago didn't want him in the NFC
Keep in mind this trade happened yesterday. The Bears were likely asking for more and other teams didn’t think they would come down as much so they chose other options.
Same here. I'm so happy with the first two offensive linemen by grabbing them before the position is picked over out of the gate. I suspect Schoen and his team did a lot of evaluations on the group and were wise to snap up the two they really liked. I'm also happy they got Drew Lock, young, experienced, and on the cheap. A pass blocking TE is nice to add to protecting the QB.

they got 19m/20m AAV respectively.

lol sorry.
Both have sucked. Fields is a bigger disappointment because he was a high pick.
Neither is going to be a starter long term. The league knows Fields isn't.
i think there's more reason to believe they know what they are doing with QBs than the opposite.
It would have created chaos in the QB room, not to mention, we have very little draft capital we can afford to give up just to create a new problem. There's a reason the Bears have given up on Fields, who is not a franchise QB, and there's a reason there wasn't a line out the door of teams waiting in line wanting to get their hands on him. Almost zero interest from teams, not even from those who need a QB, until his price was basically giving him away. And even then, only one team was interested.
Absolutely…. This is the one thing that has bugged the shit outta me….
he is turning 26 and has basically only been a starter.
that is not the ideal guy to have in a QB room with a rookie or in any sort of backup role.
pitt basically got 2 starters for league minimum and will let them fight it out but if either creates a distraction or isnt working out they can/will cut them.
I think our skill positions are still terrible. We need something.
Hindsight in always clearest, but I would have preferred to go with more guaranteed performers on the OL. Hunt or Dotson seem like surer bets than Runyan, which is the way I would have tried to end the OL jinx...

dotson didnt get to FA.
greenard has had a lot of injury issues, id take the huff deal or hunter deal over that one pretty easily.

I think more teams would have had interest but the asking price was very likely much higher until later in the week. By then most teams had signed QB’s if they really wanted one like the Giants. The lack of demand led to them taking next to nothing to unload him. Mistake on the Bears part for not asking for a bit less when FA opened.

That looks like a very good deal for Minnesota to replace a good portion of the value they lost with Hunter.

I was noting Greenard because you listed him, and I forgot he was a FA. I really like that two-year deal Houston got with Hunter. I know he's 30, but he's pretty much plug and play, and enjoy the high-level production.

This
Getting Lock is like getting a healthier Jones with a better arm. I don't. hate getting Lock, but would have rather picked up Fields, then use the 6th pick for Odunze.
I'm is sick of having Jones here. Having him around is like stepping in tar and trying to get it off your shoe.
Why in God's name would you trade a pick for Jones 2.0 lite when all it costs is $$$ to sign Lock?
This idolizing Fields is strange.
In addition to new OL Coach. 2 decent starters and some depth and 2 TEs who can actually block.
What's not to like? Oh then there's Burns.

Only way I can think of is they just play fantasy football and don't watch the games. It is mind boggling. I don't understand it. He is basically DJ and will be getting paid soon.
I agree, particularly with LW gone as well. Davidson and Riley will be huge. Wouldn't be surprised to see them go DL in 2nd or 3rd
May not have been available then.
