Jordan Raanan: Free agency goals, cuts, additions remaining?

GFAN52 : 3/21/2024 9:10 am
Marquee additions: Brian Burns (LB), Jon Runyan Jr. (G), Devin Singletary (RB)

Marquee subtractions: Saquon Barkley (RB), Xavier McKinney (S)

Did the Giants hit their free agency goals? You can only do so much in one offseason, and the top priorities were to solidify the offensive line and improve the pass rush. They succeeded, even if they're worse off at running back and in the secondary as a result. But Burns is better than any pass-rusher that was on the market and the line has four new reinforcements.

One thing we heard: "Daniel Jones is the starter of this team," quarterback Drew Lock said at his introductory news conference. "That has been conveyed to me."

Biggest remaining roster hole: The Giants still don't have a No. 1 wide receiver for Jones. It may be addressed in free agency or via trade, but right now the group is headlined by Darius Slayton, Wan'Dale Robinson and Jalin Hyatt. -- Jordan Raanan

And we have no QB... that's kind of a big deal.

Kiper has jumped the shark. Very lazy now.

We need a legit QB, a No. 1 receiver, a CB 1/2, and an additional safety.

The draft is around the corner we and Schoen needs to land 4 of these pieces in the draft, which is unlikely.

We may need to trade our 2nd round pick to move up to get a QB, which would probably screw us out of drafting a decent WR on day 2 of the draft.

I wonder if NYG will just sit at 6 and let the draft come to them. Take a WR at 6.

Try to trade back into the first for a QB?

I think that if the Giants can’t pull off a trade for NE’s pick, they might just conclude that they need to trade down to the Raiders (who might want to move ahead of Denver for the #5 QB in the draft). They would still be in a position to grab a receiving TE in Bowers or one of the next level of WRs.

Such a trade down almost certainly nets them a day 2 pick and likely a 1 or 2 from 2025, which could help in any potential trade-ups to get a top QB (assuming there is one) in 2025.
This team has huge holes still
GiantsFan84 : 3/21/2024 9:54 am : link
No QB, no #2 CB, no slot CB, maybe starting S depending on how you feel about Belton or Owens, can argue a starting DT as nacho, Riley, and Davidson are more depth than starter, and lack of a #1 WR. And they can certainly use another good LB to start next to Okereke and move McFadden to depth.

This is a bad bad bad team right now
I think FA wise
Dankbeerman : 3/21/2024 10:34 am : link
we need to add a CB, the level of which will determine if we need to draft one early this year.

We need to add a non NT DL.

We need an OT

The rest would be fill in after draft VSB and UFA

Lol don't say that here

Odunze and Penix. Odunze is a contested catch beast. This connection requires trust. They already have, this connection will play in the NFL and cause fear. Put Hyatt on the other side and Wandale in the slot and you would have 3 different types of receivers that pressure the defense in different ways. Jones will rise get injured or fail. All of it will be OK if we draft Penix and Odunze. Penix is high ceiling and Odunze has a low floor.
Honestly, this roster was riddled with holes throughout
Rick in Dallas : 3/21/2024 10:50 am : link
It wasn’t going to be fixed in one offseason.
If Schoen hits home runs in the draft and 2025 FA and draft we should be a competitive team at least in 2025.
We can only hope!!!
this is Schoen's 3rd offseason

This has nothing to do with Jones but if you don't think QBs can and will develop 5-6-7-8 years into their career I don't know what else to tell you.

The more reps you get at anything the better you get at it. This applies to any and every skill in life. Even QB.

Eli had the best season of his life in year 8. Alex Smith did the same. Jones had his best season in year 4. I'd go on but you're probably already working on a retort that condemns DJ's 2022 season so we can stop now.

It got better in year 1 then suffered a setback in year 2. The trenches are better heading into year 3. Let's see how year 3 looks. If its better than year 2, that's a good sign things are taking shape.

I understand that excuses are never accepted. However, I don't believe that coach/fan speak BS. One thing about last year - everyone said going in that the league was majorly screwing over the Giants with the schedule (maybe payback for Mara comments). There's no doubt in my mind that the schedule played a big role in how lousy the momentum went.

What makes you think Slay’s not a serviceable starter? He puts up good numbers as a deep threat on a team with no Oline and a scrambling QB who seems afraid to take deep shots.

But they are! But 40m for a serviceable starter is not good value, and with the injury risk he can’t be counted on. The team needs to find his replacement. But you don’t need make shit up to make your point better, it just takes away from it.
Offensive line is better

upgraded with proven veterans. New OL coach who will either figure Neal out or move him inside. We have starting LT and Center of the future in place. And I think many are overlooking the impact of having 2 proven blocking TEs

Giants pass rush will be much improved, with Ojularui as depth. They will look to draft Robinson's replacement and we will see how quickly Riley and Davidson develop. I'm thinking Riley is on the faster track.

We have wrs, some good young ones - they will draft a# 1 and an RB. IMO. it would help if Waller comes back to take some of the heat off the young pups.

There is progress and some setbacks - that's what happens during rebuilds.

Doesn’t appreciate the importance of a QB having the support of his team. Eli survived Stahan not believing in him but only because of that magical run in 2007. Yet there has not been one current or former Giant who agrees with the BBI consensus that he has to go. Plenty of talking heads, but not one player (not counting guys on other teams playing mind games).

Haha, this is precious. So let me get this straight. The multiple players in the NFL that actually compete against Jones that have commented on him are simply playing mind games, trying to mess him up mentally or something? They really think he’s awesome and are petrified to play against him? If this is the case, why aren’t all these players “playing mind games” with other, far more successful QBs? With this line of thinking, they may want to get started on calling Mahomes a one read QB and tell the world they know exactly where he’s going with the ball. Now would be a good time to play those mental games…
