Is Brett Favre underrated?

SFGFNCGiantsFan : 3/21/2024 7:57 pm
Went down an NFL rabbit hole earlier & ended up watching clips of Vikes-Saints '09 NFC Championship game, the game where Brett threw an INT at the end of the regulation with the Vikes in FG range to probably win the game 31-28. NOLA obviously ended up winning in OT & beating the Colts in the Super Bowl.

But reading some of the comments, you'd think Favre was a bum. It's like a generation of people currently watching/following the NFL just remember him at the tail end of his career/the controversies off the field. & yeah, the off the field stuff isn't great-to put it mildly-& he was-outside of that first '09 Vikes season-meh near the end, but the guy was an absolute beast at his zenith. He won 3-THREE-straight MVPs in the '90s, led the Packers to two Super Bowls, & is top 5 for QBs in wins, passing yards, & TDs. And yes, he is also the all time leader in picks, but his 'F it! Let's go for glory!' attitude is why I always kind of liked him. He wasn't afraid of failure. That said, his INT vs. the Eagles in the '03 divisional game...come on Brett.

Perhaps Rodgers' immediate success in GB made people forget about peak Brett. Aaron's the better QB, though both only won one Lombardi. As an aside, it is sorta UFB that the Packers had those two at QB from '92-'22 & only won 2 Super Bowls. And I get that it's a team game, but you'd think they'd have more considering there's 7 MVPs between them @ the most important position in sports.

On a purely Giants note, I love how Favre's last game as a Packer was in a loss vs. us AT Lambeau. And his last pass as a Packer was CW intercepting him in OT. Delicious.

He hung around too long

So our last memories aren't him in his prime....but mid to late 90's Favre was HOF level shit....
As to the OP question,it depends on where you rank him.
For me he is in the top 15-20 QB of all time level...thats without really diving too deeply into it
Favre's rep is hurt by his late-career failures and foibles, yes.

But peak Favre is in the conversation for greatest QB ever. He was too much of a gambler but when he was on a roll, he was electrifying to watch.

You have to remember that Favre was physically compromised for his entire career — lost a big chunk of his intestinal tract after a car accident in college. Plus he was an active alcoholic and drug addict for part of the time. By the time he played the Giants in that crazy-cold game at Lambeau, he seemed miserable in that weather.

Even forgiving his various "allergies of the body", I think he's a POS. But a great, great QB.

He was a first ballot HOFer

and played in an era spanning all time greats like Montana to Peyton to Brady.

how much higher rated do you want him to be?
I loved watching Farve

He not only was a great player but just seemed to love the game. He threw a lot of INTS so stat people look at it and think he wasn’t that good. He’s a guy you had to see play.
If you were barely a teenager

In the late 90’s Favre was THE dude. As far as what happened after? In my mind he was still great until the end, just not the greatest at that very moment.

Underrated? Only by the clueless.

Youtube comments? You madman...
a player can be amazing and have controversies
JesseS : 3/21/2024 10:12 pm : link
He continues to be insanely dishonest. if anyone did the things he did an wasn't an NFL legend, we'd loathe him. total abuse of power, time, and time, and time, again.

But underrated? Favre was a phenomenal quarterback. I'm in my early 40s. He was a defining QB of 90s football, and he came by that honestly.
In the mid 90s, when I was a middle schooler

I think I broke my Dad's heart when I told my parents I wanted a Brett Favre jersey. He was THE MAN back then.

He got a little sloppy in the end, but don't they all?
Sucks that his last pass

As a Packer was an interception at Lambeau that led to the Giants winning the Super Bowl. Poor guy.
Prime Brett Favre was awesome
Greg from LI : 3/21/2024 11:28 pm : link
The numbers he put up in the mid-90s don’t pop today (though they’d still be very good), but in that era, the way teams could defend back then, they were incredible. He was a lot of fun to watch too, scrambling and firing lasers all over the field.
Unbelievably gifted player

But too many bad plays when it counted. He was too dumb when the pressure got too big on the field. “Too dumb” seems to apply off the field too.

3 straight MVPs. Champion. Absurd durability. All-time arm and backyard playmaking.

He’s one of the best. But not as good as Rodgers, Peyton, Brady, Mahomes, Montana, Marino in no order.

Brees vs. Favre is a fair one imo. Brees feels more trustworthy but Favre’s ceiling was higher. Elway vs. Favre is an interesting one because technically by ‘96 Favre had surpassed Elway all-time due to having a SB title and winning much more MVPs. But then Elway won two in a row handing it off the Terrell Davis and Favre having incredible longevity after that couldn’t make up for it in terms of perception. But even then, I trust Elway in a big spot more than Favre.
I’d lean overrated than underrated

Was not a good playoff QB. Extremely careless with the ball and lucky he won a Super Bowl.
I think he is a little underrated.
Section331 : 3/22/2024 9:57 am : link
He did get a little careless with the ball later in his career, and he didn’t help himself with come off the field shenanigans (dick pics at NYJ, stadium funding scheme at Miss St). I think the game he had against Oakland after his dad died might have been the worst thing to happen to him. He was just throwing passes up for grabs and his WR’s made plays.

I really think he felt that his father was up there directing passes for him, and he would throw some of the worst passes you will ever see, especially late in games (playoff game against Philly was a prime example). But he was a 3x MVP, finished 2nd twice, and 3rd and 4th once each. That’s a pretty fucking good football player.
No

Great QB but it did get a bit tiresome with the drama. The air horn, EW's visits, etc. Agree he looked like he wanted to be in the locker room against the Giants.

He did want to go to Minny but that Jets team he left had a lot of talent.

They really should have won the CG against the Saints. They were the better team that day but tough overcoming 5 TO's.
Two things that stand out
sec308 : 3/22/2024 11:43 am : link
about Brett that are big negatives on top of his early and late career problems, and I think he is a hall of fame deserved player. 1. I felt that he was over confident during media rounds before the Super Bowl with Denver and they shouldn't have lost that game. 2. Laying down for Strahan and planning it. Two examples of thinking he was bigger than the game.
I never thought as Farve being underrated

.
I know he was outplayed by Eli
CTGiants : 3/22/2024 11:48 am : link
in the NFC Championship game at Lambeau! One thing that stands out to me was how in the bitter cold, Favre kept switching his gloves, whereas Eli played the entire game without I'm pretty sure. You would have thought it would have been the other way around, with Favre having the home field advantage he could have adjusted better
He's properly rated as a player
rsjem1979 : 3/22/2024 11:56 am : link
And a huge piece of shit as a person.
JoeMP, is that you? Just kidding.
Dave in Hoboken : 3/22/2024 12:14 pm : link
He's an all-time great, but made a considerable amount of mistakes in some big spots, especially later on in his career. But he's still an all-time great.

Personally, I always felt he was overrated.

I always hated the "gunslinger" mentality

Elway basically had the reverse career of Favre, struggled early in big games, but eventually became a guy you could rely on. Favre started off red hot, but then became one of, if not the biggest chokers ever

He was definitely the best QB in the NFL during his peak but then for some reason it felt like he did get way too much hype around him when he got older. Overrated? Nah.

I just remember his name coming up way too much during games in 2004 or 2005 or so "oh only Brett Favre could make that throw or make that play" if a QB threw an interception ... Huh?

He was Brett Favre and all that, but some of those throws, decisions and retirement circus shows later in his career stick out in my mind more than his 90s success to me, for some reason.

Seems like a very weird guy.

I'm not sure I have him over Steve Young.

Maybe being a homer, but Young seems underrated in the annals of QB lore.

The head to head W/L record shouldn't matter because Young lost a bunch to Aikman too, and teams mattered more back then than they do now.

Yeah. The Packers were what before Favre?

The 49ers were what before Steve Young?;

I watched something where he admitted that for many years he just pretended that he understood what the coaches were telling him. Something like “I never knew that ‘2 deep zone’ was a real thing”

Pretty amazing how good he was - just on instinct and talent.
