Went down an NFL rabbit hole earlier & ended up watching clips of Vikes-Saints '09 NFC Championship game, the game where Brett threw an INT at the end of the regulation with the Vikes in FG range to probably win the game 31-28. NOLA obviously ended up winning in OT & beating the Colts in the Super Bowl.
But reading some of the comments, you'd think Favre was a bum. It's like a generation of people currently watching/following the NFL just remember him at the tail end of his career/the controversies off the field. & yeah, the off the field stuff isn't great-to put it mildly-& he was-outside of that first '09 Vikes season-meh near the end, but the guy was an absolute beast at his zenith. He won 3-THREE-straight MVPs in the '90s, led the Packers to two Super Bowls, & is top 5 for QBs in wins, passing yards, & TDs. And yes, he is also the all time leader in picks, but his 'F it! Let's go for glory!' attitude is why I always kind of liked him. He wasn't afraid of failure. That said, his INT vs. the Eagles in the '03 divisional game...come on Brett.
Perhaps Rodgers' immediate success in GB made people forget about peak Brett. Aaron's the better QB, though both only won one Lombardi. As an aside, it is sorta UFB that the Packers had those two at QB from '92-'22 & only won 2 Super Bowls. And I get that it's a team game, but you'd think they'd have more considering there's 7 MVPs between them @ the most important position in sports.
On a purely Giants note, I love how Favre's last game as a Packer was in a loss vs. us AT Lambeau. And his last pass as a Packer was CW intercepting him in OT. Delicious.
As to the OP question,it depends on where you rank him.
For me he is in the top 15-20 QB of all time level...thats without really diving too deeply into it
You have to remember that Favre was physically compromised for his entire career — lost a big chunk of his intestinal tract after a car accident in college. Plus he was an active alcoholic and drug addict for part of the time. By the time he played the Giants in that crazy-cold game at Lambeau, he seemed miserable in that weather.
Even forgiving his various "allergies of the body", I think he's a POS. But a great, great QB.
how much higher rated do you want him to be?
Underrated? Only by the clueless.
But underrated? Favre was a phenomenal quarterback. I'm in my early 40s. He was a defining QB of 90s football, and he came by that honestly.
He got a little sloppy in the end, but don't they all?
3 straight MVPs. Champion. Absurd durability. All-time arm and backyard playmaking.
He’s one of the best. But not as good as Rodgers, Peyton, Brady, Mahomes, Montana, Marino in no order.
Brees vs. Favre is a fair one imo. Brees feels more trustworthy but Favre’s ceiling was higher. Elway vs. Favre is an interesting one because technically by ‘96 Favre had surpassed Elway all-time due to having a SB title and winning much more MVPs. But then Elway won two in a row handing it off the Terrell Davis and Favre having incredible longevity after that couldn’t make up for it in terms of perception. But even then, I trust Elway in a big spot more than Favre.
I really think he felt that his father was up there directing passes for him, and he would throw some of the worst passes you will ever see, especially late in games (playoff game against Philly was a prime example). But he was a 3x MVP, finished 2nd twice, and 3rd and 4th once each. That’s a pretty fucking good football player.
He did want to go to Minny but that Jets team he left had a lot of talent.
They really should have won the CG against the Saints. They were the better team that day but tough overcoming 5 TO's.
I always hated the "gunslinger" mentality

Elway basically had the reverse career of Favre, struggled early in big games, but eventually became a guy you could rely on. Favre started off red hot, but then became one of, if not the biggest chokers ever
I just remember his name coming up way too much during games in 2004 or 2005 or so "oh only Brett Favre could make that throw or make that play" if a QB threw an interception ... Huh?
He was Brett Favre and all that, but some of those throws, decisions and retirement circus shows later in his career stick out in my mind more than his 90s success to me, for some reason.
Seems like a very weird guy.
I have Favre at #14...

I'm not sure I have him over Steve Young.
Maybe being a homer, but Young seems underrated in the annals of QB lore.
The head to head W/L record shouldn't matter because Young lost a bunch to Aikman too, and teams mattered more back then than they do now.
The 49ers were what before Steve Young?;

I watched something where he admitted that for many years he just pretended that he understood what the coaches were telling him. Something like “I never knew that ‘2 deep zone’ was a real thing”
Pretty amazing how good he was - just on instinct and talent.
I always hated the "gunslinger" mentality
I guess you hated watching Eli play then?
