I know it's hindsight but why did the Giants turn down Jones 5th year option in 2022? Unless I'm mistaken, I remember BBI being 50/50 split from people wanting to pick up the option and those who didn't.
Looking at how QB salaries have balloned up these past 2 years. Jones 5th year option would have been market price for a QB of his caliber in 2023 off-season.
Plus more importantly, Schoen and Daboll would have had the ability to easily hit the reset button this off-season with both those contacts (Barkley and Jones) if they didn't pan out in 2023.
It was a good plan. Then they changed their minds.
It was a good plan. Then they changed their minds.
And now they've possibly realized that their initial assessment was the correct one
I don't like Jones and have not been impressed by Schoen, but that was the proper assessment based on the circumstances.
You can get on Joe for a lot, but not that IMO.
Apparently nothing there stood out enough to guarantee an additional year.
In March 2022, the fanbase was largely done with Jones, even moreso than now. Again, it was assumed Jones would depart in free agency in March 2023, and before that, Tyrod would probably supplant him as starter by November. This was a widely held assumption.
The Giants surprisingly season, despite a struggling offense, changed fan opinion on Jones by December. The Vikings game was the cherry on the top.
I thought about that sentence before I hit submit. I don't think so. I think the people who were done with Jones are much more vocal and persistent about it now. But I think he has actual more passionate defenders now because of 2022.
Jones' rookie season was a mixed bag.
But the next two seasons were bad.
Then came the upswing in 2022.
2022 is what his defenders are hanging their hat on. They can't go back to 2020 or 2021.

One quibble: I think the fan base is more done with Jones than that it was in the winter/spring of '22. & I think a lot of it has to due with the contract.

I can’t figure out where Jones was so good in 2022 that he deserved the contract he got. The offense was based off Barkley being the threat, and the Jones running. Next to nothing throwing for TDs. Many fans didn’t see it after that season ended w the loss to the Philly
I have a feeling the Jones defenders will always channel their inner Bogart...'We'll always have that '22 season & that epic Vikes WC win.'

I think people looked at who the Giants trotted out as receivers that season and figured he would be better some weapons in the passing game.
Schoen and Brandon Brown should be the men running the show, with the input from the coaching staff, not the meddling co-owner.
I really think Schoen and Daboll were prepared to let Jones enter FA before the contract fiasco took place.
I can't wait until the Giants are Jones free.

Well said. The gift and the curse of 2022. Now I’m thinking what happens if the Giants draft a QB and make the playoffs this year with Jones. This is why I believe the Giants will not draft QB at 6. They will go WR and continue to revamp the oline. There’s no more excuses after this year and yet where have I heard that before.
Coaching ahead of the 5 th year option debate. I’m fact - he performed like Ei did at the end of his career when the team was a mess. I def didn’t feel like the jury was out on him or that it was obvious not to do the 5th year option.
I have a feeling the Jones defenders will always channel their inner Bogart...'We'll always have that '22 season & that epic Vikes WC win.'
Some people also don’t want to admit when they’re wrong in thinking Jones was the answer.
I think the Giants would have been better record wise in this scenario, but I don’t think Jones is a championship level QB. He doesn’t have the confidence that Eli had for starters.
either Mara influenced Schoen in giving DJ a bigger contract than he was worth, or Schoen himself massively overrated Jones based on one playoff win.
both of those scenarios are scary.
Which should mean don't draft a qb unless you have a good line. Jones is a prime example of what can happen.
It was the correct decision to decline the 5th year option. The idea that the Giants signed Jones because of a playoff win is a silly arguement. You never base a decision on one game positively or negatively.
In March 2022, the fanbase was largely done with Jones, even moreso than now. Again, it was assumed Jones would depart in free agency in March 2023, and before that, Tyrod would probably supplant him as starter by November. This was a widely held assumption.

I will apply my memory to disagree on some significant points.
Jones suffered his neck injury in November 2021. In early October 2021, he had one of the best games of his career, throwing for 402 yards in an upset OT win over the Saints in the Superdome.
Also, as of the time of his November neck injury, Jones and the Giants were on a three game home win streak (Panthers, Raiders and the Eagles game in which Jones was hurt).
Certainly many NYG fans as of March 2022 were looking to a QB future without Jones, but not at all in greater proportion then vs now. And not many people actually took Tyrod Taylor seriously as a potential starting replacement. Taylor was, even then, five years removed from his last starting gig, a brute fact the significance of which was recognized by most.
As for the fan view of Jones in December 2022: as of the embarrassing 48-22 home loss to the Eagles on December 11, Week 14 of the regular season, the Giants were 0-3-1 in their last four contests. The losses were all bad beatdowns and the tie was a home struggle against the Commanders.
The good vibes from the 6-1 start had faded and, as of that very late point in the 2022 season, even the DJ fan club on this board did not want to give Jones more than a "bridge" contract (say 2 years, $20-25M/yr) to the next QB.
The prime time win over the Commanders, two games with the Vikings and the Colts' game gave the fan club more heart and voice to support a big money deal for DJ, but there were a lot of people who didn't let a few games change their fundamental view of the NYG QB.
Getting back to the question about the 5th year option decision: the neck injury was one clincher. The other clincher was that Mara knew NYG could always offer DJ an attractive enough deal to remain after 2022. Which is what happened.
Which should mean don't draft a qb unless you have a good line. Jones is a prime example of what can happen.
I disagree with the second part. When you see the QB and happen to be in position to draft him.. then you get him.
And then DJ played better in 2022 and yet still wasn't worth anywhere near his current contract. It was an easy decision too but this one was missed because of an empty playoff victory in the wildcard round.
In the off-season going into 2022?
I'm all for the idea in hindsight (I would have traded Jones for any draft pick), but would there have been a market for a guy coming off a neck injury?
