I don't get the Penix Jr. chatter.

SFGFNCGiantsFan : 3/25/2024 7:00 pm
Based on the articles last week/some insider posts last week that one of the-if not THE-main reason we're looking to move on from Jones is the health component. Well, Penix Jr. is no clean bill of health either, as he tore his ACL twice in college. & I know that's not the career ender that it was once, but it's a definite red flag IMO. I also get that it's not a neck issue that Jones has had twice now in his career. But if those articles & BBI chatter from insiders are to believed...I just don't see us drafting him. Am I missing something?

Don't get me wrong: I'd be pleased if we drafted Penix Jr, though I'd be shocked if we took him @ 6. If we did end up drafting him, I'd suspect it would be us moving back into the first. I liked what I saw of him @ UDub & it'd be something if we took Rome @ 6 & then grabbed Penix Jr. to reunite the duo.
It’s a valid point
UConn4523 : 3/25/2024 7:13 pm : link
But I think the head/neck injuries trump former knee surgeries.
I haven't seen anything connecting the Giants to Penix
Go Terps : 3/25/2024 7:13 pm : link
That would really surprise me.
4 QBs and MHJ will go top 5
Jaenyg : 3/25/2024 7:14 pm : link
We will trade with the falcons who want to get ahead of the titans, netting us a 2nd from the falcons.

Odunze is waiting for us at 8.

We pair our two 2nds and move back into 1st for Penix.
What's there to get?
Jim in Forest Hills : 3/25/2024 7:17 pm : link
Penix threatens every part of the field and doesn't need to set his feet to do it.

While he was at IND he beat MICH and Penn State with Indiana 1 star talent. He lost to OSU 42-35. With IND. Dude can ball.

He has played the last 2 years without missing any time. If he checks out medically, why not?
Injuries are a fluke
crooza172 : 3/25/2024 7:20 pm : link
For the most part. Frank gore was labeled as injury prone early on and went on to be one of the most reliable backs in history. Barkley, before he came here, was never hurt and look what happened.

You never know.
Injuries

Play a part but the main reason they want to move off Jones is because he's paid 40 million a year and gives you below average QB play.

You can't take him at 6 but I think Penix is going to be a good NFL starter.
I pointed it out in the other thread
Go Terps : 3/25/2024 7:29 pm : link
Penix has the lowest sack/pressure rate of any big prospect since 2014, and no one has thrown the ball more than him the last two years. He knows how to get rid of the football on time.
there is no Penix
BigBlueCane : 3/25/2024 7:31 pm : link
chatter, its just the attempt at a smokescreen.
GT.
SFGFNCGiantsFan : 3/25/2024 7:33 pm : link
Talking about chatter on BBI of Giants taking him.

& again, I'm fine with us taking him. But it seems to go against what has been floated out, that health is the reason we're moving on from Jones. If that's the case, I don't see us taking a QB who has torn his ACL twice.
I haven’t watched
Osi Osi Osi OyOyOy : 3/25/2024 7:33 pm : link
A lot of the prospects this year. I’m far from an expert, no YouTube deep dives this year.

But he’s the best QB prospect from what I’ve seen.
Not 6
Thegratefulhead : 3/25/2024 7:35 pm : link
I think there 3 number 1 wr and 3 QB1s. I would take a wr a trade back up for Penix because of the high upside. I like Lock too, I am not a Jones hater even though I want to replace. I will root like HELL for the kid. I am a big fan of effort. If I were a betting man I think Jones NFL career ends in 2024. Hopefully with just a twinge and nothing tragic. I like the kid, scared for him a bit to be honest. He will push himself too far.
There's people who like any one of the different qb's expected to go

day 1 or 2. Even Milton and Rattler have their fans on bbi. Why would you expect otherwise?
If the Giants take Penix at 6
bwitz : 3/25/2024 7:36 pm : link
the the front office/ownership has learned nothing and, the franchise will be fucked for another 10+ years.

Did some of you not read my initial post? I get that all QBs will have their fans/detractors, but this was about the talk last week that one of the reasons the Giants were ready to move on from Jones was because of the injuries, while Penix Jr. has an extensive injury history himself. This wasn't a critique of him as a player...I like him.
It isn’t ironic
JT039 : 3/25/2024 7:40 pm : link
When he actually faced a legitimate defense - he struggled - mightily.

He has by far the worst stats when facing pressure of the top 6. NFL isn’t the Swiss cheese defense that the Pac-12 is.

You make a fair point. But we’re moving on from Jones for more than a health standpoint. We’re moving on because he was a limited passer as well.

Your argument is completely valid, and why they shouldn’t even consider drafting Penix anywhere other than than a round lower than 3. If they draft him at 6, they’re fucking morons.
I haven’t seen anything linking the Giants
LW_Giants : 3/25/2024 7:50 pm : link
To him and I’d be absolutely shocked if he was the pick. Going from one injury plagued qb to another seems very unlikely. It also negates the argument giants brass have seemed to settle on if they move on from jones (“he’s great, but never healthy we had no choice!”)

Also, the giants by nature are a risk averse organization, he’s an incredibly high risk pick

Agreed. SR has some talent, but I wouldn't have him on my radar until day three.
The risk is too high for re-injury of that right knee...

Excellent examples! I remember the year Gore was drafted. He was a 1st round talent who slipped to the 3rd round solely because of his resume of injuries at the time.
I watched Penix in some big games
chiro56 : 3/25/2024 8:35 pm : link
He always found a way with the exception of one game. I don’t know shit about scouting qbs. But Penix was the best college thrower I saw last year.
I don’t watch college football
Giantimistic : 3/25/2024 9:06 pm : link
But watched the championship game. I didn’t see it with McCarthy but there was just something about Penix that I liked.

I am far from knowing anything and will trust the staff who they pick, but would be happy with Penix especially if there was a way to get him second round—drop because of injuries.

I think that would be overpaying, thr Vikings overpaid the Texans for their 2nd and a future 2nd. We could get into pick 26-32 range for pick 47 and 70 I believe.
I have a feeling Penix is going to be a franchise QB
BleedBlue46 : 3/25/2024 9:11 pm : link
And have a fairly injury free career likr Frank Gore did. I'm not sure I'd trade into rd1 for him, but if we got Odunze at 6 I would absolutely take him at 47.

LOL. Maybe - just maybe - he had one of the lowest sack/pressure rates because he had one of the best pass blocking OL’s in the nation, as well as THREE excellent receivers?

Just a thought….

Question is whether or not the Giants like the character and intelligence. However, throw for throw he’s better than Williams.
Here's Matt Waldman's QB rundown
Go Terps : 3/26/2024 3:12 am : link
Lots of detail in this on 20 QB prospects. Another guy that sounds high on Penix (and Nix), less so on Maye, McCarthy, and even Daniels. He thinks this is a good year to take WR in round one and wait to round two for QB.

I remember him at IU too … before his injuries, he looked all world. He’s the one whose potential most reminds me of Mahomes’ … but he’s also had some very tough injuries since.

Is that I hope anyone trashing Penix for his performance against Michigan better not be hyping up Drew Allar next year if the Giants don't get a QB...talk about a guy who folded against good competition.
There is a lot to like
UberAlias : 3/26/2024 8:56 am : link
But between the injury history, mobility not being what it is for some of the other QBs, and age, he's not the best fit for what JS and BD are looking for. They have Jones for this year at least regardless. They aren't looking for a guy to come in and start right away. They're looking for the guy they can develop into their next Josh Allen.

I keep reading from some here that Penix has mobility issues. I don't believe it. Penix weights 220 and ran a 4.53 40 at the Combine. That's pretty fast for a QB and damn fast for a guy who had two knee surgeries. I think he will be mobile if the scheme calls for it.
I'd much prefer Nix over Penix if we don't get Maye or maybe JJM
PatersonPlank : 3/26/2024 12:25 pm : link
In the future I think we may look back at Nix as this years "falling for nitpicking reasons" draft choice
I like Penix more than most,
Section331 : 3/26/2024 12:29 pm : link
but they’re not taking him at 6. I could see a scenario where they miss out on the top 4, grab Nabers or Odunze, and trade back into the 1st to take Penix or Nix.

My bad. I don't know where I got it from that he ran a 4.53 and McCarty ran a 4.55.
