Some former Giants contract details:
• OL Ben Bredeson with the Bucs: 1 year, $3M with $1.75M guaranteed. I'll leave it to
@nickkorte
to break down the comp pick implications of that contract.
• OLB Jihad Ward with the Vikings: 1 year, $1.8M with $1M guaranteed.
• OL Matt Peart with the Broncos: 1 year, $1.3M with $367K guaranteed. It's a VSB contract.
Obviously none of these players were priced out. Not a surprise that Ward isn't back with Wink gone. Giants turning over their OL starters/depth.
The point most are trying to make is that a GM shouldn't be thinking about comp picks when deciding whether to sign a free agent. If your team is bad, signing a player who can make your team better now is more important than getting a 4th, 5th, 6th round pick a year later that might turn into a good player.
For example, should the Giants have passed on signing Eluemunor so they could get a 4th or 5th rounder next year. No way.
It's nice if you get the extra picks, but it's better to get help you need now. And in most cases, bad teams are signing more free agents than they are losing. If a bad team has a good player it knows will leave after the season it's much smarter to trade them (Williams for a 2nd) because you will get a higher, and more immediate return. They essentially stand to gain a 4th in 2025 and all the other guys they signed, for 'trading' McKinney, Barkley, and all the others guys that left. Not to mentioned if they had traded those guys they would likely be picking 2nd or 3rd this year and would be able to get the QB they want.

I disagree. People want to know where we stand with comp picks and the posters that are complaining are the ones saying we should make the team better now. The real point is that it is an important talking point. It shouldn't be shit on that people want to discuss it and know where we stand especially since McKinney and Barkley weren't traded at the deadline.
Comp picks shouldn’t impact who we choose to sign or not. But it is a good indicator of how well you draft. But are consistently getting comp picks than most likely you are drafting well

Exactly. Bad teams don't usually get comp picks. They can't afford to let their best players go because they don't/haven't developed quality depth players who are ready to step in as starters. The comp picks issue shouldn't factor into the team's free agent decisions at all. I'm all for getting extra picks. But I'm more for getting proven help now. How many think McKinney's value was a fourth in NEXT year's draft.
And for the poster who said this means the team can trade its 4th rounder next year. I would hope they trade the comp pick 4th rounder.

They can't trade the comp pick until they are awarded it next year. But if they are anticipating an extra 4th next year, they can be more willing to trade away their own 4th or 5th. (The comp pick will come at the end of the 4th round, so it will be in between their own 4th and 5th).
It's an important talking point.
