NFL Owners pass the new kickoff rule

Ben in Tampa : 3/26/2024 9:40 am
NFL will be adopting the XFL version of the kick off. Its a 1-year trial rule, so it may not be permanent.

Here is a description of the new play

Quote:
Under the new rule, 10 players on the kicking team and at least nine players on the receiving team will line up just five yards apart and won’t begin running until the ball gets back to the returner, meaning players won’t be going full speed when they crash into each other, which caused so many injuries on kickoffs in years past. Of the 22 players on the field, only the kicker and one or two kickoff returners will line up separately from those players who are five yards apart.

And I linked a Schefter tweet with an example video
Here is what the new kickoff will look like - ( New Window )
I'd like them to address

with some detail how onsides and squib kicks are handled.
I wonder how many penalties

Onsides and squibs go away. You have to kick it into the landing zones.
I kinda like it, actually.
Beezer : 3/26/2024 9:53 am : link
Maybe will help reduce the injuries, but if the kicker is still kicking off from the same spot, won't most kickoffs still go out of the end zone anyway?

Ball gets placed at a different spot of that happens. The design is to cut down injuries of full speed hits but still encourage returns.

You can still attempt onside kick but you have to announce it in advance. So no longer any "surprise" onside kicks
The more they mess with

the KO, the more silly it gets and complex. While I applaud them trying to make the KO relevant again, the complexity at first glance is rough.

XFL was already doing this and it appeared successful. I suspect we will see more experiments done in the UFL (former XFL and USFL leagues combined now) tied to NFL interest.

Interesting. Hadn't read that yet. That's good because those are the most fun kickoffs we have and seem safer, even if they don't work very often.

actually don't hate it?

ST coaches coming up with blocking schemes in a tighter set as we speak.

Feels like if you break that line, you're gone? I'm sure that will be coached up.
punt
Archer : 3/26/2024 10:30 am : link
I like it but would prefer it if the kick were a punt
In punting you have more control, you can squib, onside, go for hang time, etc.

Yeah, obviously there will need to be "waves" (for lack of a better way to say it) just for that reason (you break the line, GONE!) On that note, anyone know if there are statistically more breakaways/returns for TDs in this configuration?
i like it overall..
nyfootballfan : 3/26/2024 10:43 am : link
maybe they could tweak the onside kick by having it land in the lineup zone (if thats correct) then its a free for all. just a thought.
I don't hate it
Giantology : 3/26/2024 10:48 am : link
But it sure seems like a lot to take in and understand for one play / aspect of the game with the various landing zone rules and scenarios
Finally get the kick return back
Big Rick in FL : 3/26/2024 10:53 am : link
Which is awesome. Not much better feeling than taking the opening kickoff to the house or starting the 2nd half with a kick return TD.

Like Dwayne Harris kick return TD to beat Dallas in 2015 or Ron Dixon's return to open the game against the Eagles in the 2000 playoffs. Hell while Dixon returned the kickoff in the SB for a TD I thought for about a minute we could possibly come back lol
I’m a traditionalist who hates rule changes
Shecky : 3/26/2024 10:57 am : link
But, seeing the video, I’m very serious to hear what people who actually watch XFL games thought of the rule change.

To be honest, during games after a team scores I just view it as nearly a ten minute break to piss and grab a new beer now. Review of the TD, XP, commercial, kickoff into endzone, commercial

So if this rule change brings special teams back, I’m open to it.

Has anyone watched XFL games and have some input?
I watched some XFL and like the kickoff rule
GiantTuff1 : 3/26/2024 11:05 am : link
Especially if the alternative was no kicks offs ever being returned. Kickoffs were one of the most exciting plays in sports and this is a clever way to include it back in.

Legislating rules is supposed to make the game better but NFL kickoff rules in recent years really hurt the game and frankly almost killed this exciting play off completely.
I also wonder if the “safer” version of the kickoff
GiantTuff1 : 3/26/2024 11:06 am : link
will have teams reconsider the type of player they want back there for the return.
If I remember correctly
moespree : 3/26/2024 11:10 am : link
People were mocking the XFL for this....until they actually saw it in action.

Then it was more of a meh reaction. A reaction was somewhat of a don't like it, but it's not that bad either type one.

Probably similar here as it plays out.

XFL last season (went to a Sea Dragons game in Seattle) and said the NFL should adopt their kickoff rules. Glad they’re doing this because it’s way better than mostly eliminating kickoffs.

As for onsides, the XFL allowed the opportunity for what I think was basically a 4th and 15 attempt instead of onsides near the end of game to keep the ball. Onsides are so difficultin the NFL now that it made sense as well.
Most players running full speed run past the returner
gtt350 : 3/26/2024 12:42 pm : link
always made me crazy
Geez. I would like the kickoff to at least look like the way it used
Ivan15 : 3/26/2024 1:11 pm : link
To be.

Maybe they could just put weight belts and ankle weights on everybody.
Won't change a thing
Sky King : 3/26/2024 1:23 pm : link
Kickoffs through the end zone like always, and ball only placed 5 yards farther to the 30.

Fewer than 60% of the Giants kickoffs in 2023 were touchbacks. For teams who were already trying to win the field position game, this will certainly have an impact.

More than 1/3 of the teams in the league had fewer than 75% of their kicks go for touchbacks.
So, you start at the 30 instead of the 25
5BowlsSoon : 3/26/2024 2:17 pm : link
Do you think this will “inhibit” teams from booting it out of the end zone just because it is 5 extra yards?
_____________
I am Ninja : 3/26/2024 4:59 pm : link
there will be people who are gonna bitch because people love to bitch, but to say a waste of time kickoff out the back of the endzone is better than this is not a valid opinion.

If it does they’ll the change it again, making a touchback more punitive.

97% of XFL kickoffs were returned.
