James Ferentz, recently retired NFL lineman for the past 9 years, 2x Super Bowl champ, and son of Iowa HC, was hired as assistant o-line coach by the Giants.

The Giants announced that James Ferentz has been hired as assistant offensive line coach. The son of Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz, he recently retired after a 10-year career as an offensive lineman. Ferentz spent the bulk of his career with the Patriots, so he has history with new OL coach Carmen Bricillo.

Ferentz won two Super Bowls with the Pats and recently retired. He was coached by Carmen Bricillo in New England. He is the son of Iowa HC Kirk Ferentz.
actually did pretty good here as Asst OL coach. So why not the same for Ferentz's kid?
And before the "did Sparano do good here?" people, our OL took a step back when he left to take the Colts job and the Colts OL got better. (18th in 2022 to 3rd in 2023 via PFF)
Between the new coaches and the FA acquisitions, I am optimistic about our OL and our offense improving. That doesn't mean I have unrealistic expectations. But, even getting to middle of the pack would be a significant improvement.

Never shoulda let him go.
In retrospect, yeah he should have stayed and Bobby Johnson should have gone.
My angst had to do with the previous hire. A well known fact that the Giants O Line has been terrible for 10 years.
Knowing that, the decision to hire Daboll's high school football coaches son last year (someone with zero NFL experience as either a player or coach) was maddening. Especially with the fact that he was replacing a very skilled NFL coach.
And it got even worse when Chris Smith decided to move on from Daboll's Giants to join James Madison last week.
Hopefully we can now move on and the team of Bricillo and Ferentz is the talk of the league beginning this season with them finally turning this mess around.

Like the strength coach who went to Florida, I wonder if Smith waa told to look for other opportunities.

Connections are how people break in as Quality Control coaches, Assistant to Position coaches, etc. Mike Treier had a similar background when he became a coach for us and look how many regimes he has survived. Smith’s experience doesn’t differ from many who hold that role. Look at Bricillo’s background before he was hired by New England.

Why rationalize what was obviously an error in initial judgement? Going into last year the Giants were seriously dependent on the growth and development of the young OL. Expecting a guy with Smith’s resume to be able to facilitate that learning was a mistake. It looks like Dabs realized and fixed it.
For a non perennial power house who pits out better NFL OL? In fact I’d suggest his record of putting out NFL level OL is almost unmatched over his time as HC.
I have posted about the Smith hire previously. No question that his Dad, Jerry Smith, was an incredible HS coach. But as I have mentioned, he didn't just coach Brian Daboll.
He also coached the following HS players that have grown to significant ranks in the NFL:
Tom Telesco (GM of the Raiders)
Chris Polian (Washington's director of Pro Personnel)
Kyle Smith (Asst GM of the Falcons)
David Caldwell (Eagles Head of Personnel)
None of these 4 ever decided to hire Jerry's son Chris and get him his first NFL experience. But Daboll knew how bad the Giants O Line has been, yet still hired a first timer.
Again, I am very happy with the Ferentz hire, but can only conclude (as I said from the day it happened) that it was a really poor decision to hire Chris Smith.
As usual, you’re an invaluable poster. That Asst OL coach hire is one of the overlooked mistakes Daboll made last offseason. Glad to see it’s being corrected.
I could swear Kirk Ferentz was one of the candidates for the HC job opening here. I want to say during either the Reeves/Wandstadt lead up or maybe the Fassel lead up. I remember seeing his name among some of the candidates. MAybe they never even interviewed him but his name was mentioned.

It was discussed when Shurmur was hired. He seems to have had his name rumored with the Giants forever, so my guess is you are correct in your recollection. Link - ( New Window )

Heck, I thought he retired awhile ago. He wasn't a bad player for the Pats. So he can be like an 'intern' so to speak.

fingers crossed he took copious notes
This! His old man may not be able to put the ball in the end zone much but he can coach the shit out of a lineman.
