You never hear much about pre-draft spying by NFL teams.

bc4life : 3/28/2024 4:04 pm
It has be happening. But I cannot recall reading one article about it.
What do you mean

By pre-draft spying?
?

???
ok thought that was pretty obvious
bc4life : 3/28/2024 5:11 pm : link
spying "pre-draft" = trying to find out what the other teams are going to do. For example, if you were Schoen - wouldn't you want to know what teams 1-5 were going to do? Or teams that draft after us who may want to move up like Denver or Minnesota?
analogous to

industrial espionage.
I think he means like
Wiggy : 3/28/2024 5:13 pm : link
One team trying to get info on another teams draft board. Or just what their plans are.
How on Earth would you spy on a team's draft intentions?
Mike from Ohio : 3/28/2024 5:13 pm : link
Bug their offices? Break into their war room?

I can't tell if this post is meant to be taken seriously.
Like a photo of a teams draft board?

Teams that ever received such information would be severely punished by the league so I doubt it.
ok let me ask you three questions
bc4life : 3/28/2024 5:19 pm : link
first, if you were Schoen wouldn't you want to know what the teams I referenced had planned to do in Round 1. No need to answer that.

Question 2 - is breaking into someone's office the only way you could think of to get that information?

Question 3 - how might you go about getting that information?
GFAN
bc4life : 3/28/2024 5:22 pm : link
sure - on two conditions
1) if they got caught

2) if it could be proven
I would love an article on how the Titans and Bears stole

You wouldn't or probably
bc4life : 3/28/2024 5:28 pm : link
couldn't find out if you tried re: all their draft picks. But, that first round - that information seems too valuable to not want to steal it.

But what exactly are you stealing? It's not like there is some secret memo that outlines their draft plans.

For example, what would you steal that would tell you what the Patriots would do at #3? You can see the way they tiered prospects, but would it tell you that they would take MHJ (let's say rated 92) over Drake Maye (rated 90) because QB may be more important?

Would what you stole tell you what it would cost to trade into the #3 spot? If they trade out of that spot those ratings are meaningless.

I think you don't hear about spying because nobody does it because there is nothing bankable in the information, and because even a strong rumor of being involved in it will end your career.

I am sure you would want to insulate yourself and have some bullet proof deniability. But would have to commit an illegal act to do it?

I could be dead wrong. But, that type of info is so valuable. And it might be more important for a team at certain times, certain drafts.
No I suspect you would not find
bc4life : 3/28/2024 5:35 pm : link
the "secret memo" - might be more of an indicator or set of indicators.

So you are putting your career and reputation in the hands of whom? Who is this person you trust with your professional future because they are both this good to get the information, and this loyal that if they were caught they would pretend they were doing it to win your favor?
Might be dead wrong
bc4life : 3/28/2024 5:39 pm : link
But I cannot think of anything extremely valuable, that someone would not try to steal. Shit - you've had FBI, CIA agents stealing and selling National Security secrets knowing full well what the consequences would be.

Oh well, sorry for wasting a half hour of everyone's time that they'll never see again.

P.S. I'm right.

How much might that information be worth? How much time do you think they would actually do?

Would it have to be an owner - what about a well-connected fan?

The point I was making is that the draft is a series of decisions, not a single piece of information. There is not a single thing to steal. And what you could find, with no context, isn't that valuable.

Stealing state secrets is not even slightly comparable to stealing draft boards. The steep cost far outweighs any tiny benefit.
I agree
bc4life : 3/28/2024 5:47 pm : link
it need not be a single piece of information. It could be a series of indicators.

Not sure if this is directly applicable, but Kyle Shanahan literally told nobody in the 49er organization he was picking Trey Lance until a day or two before the draft. He might not even have told his family either.

And this despite the Shanahan administration being real airtight with leaks compared to prior ones. But this seemed so important, that not even John Lynch and Jed York knew until the last minute.

All this knowing full well that the Jaguars were taking Lawrence, and the Jets taking Wilson, with the Niners taking 1 of 3 (Lance, Fields, Mac Jones) and no teams to immediately follow with taking a QB -- Fields and Jones went several picks after Lance if I recall correctly.

In hindsight I'm not sure why it really mattered that much, if Shanahan declared Lance publicly. Supposedly Sean McVay thought it wasn't a QB for sure (Kyle Pitts TE) until I think Shanahan out and out said it would be.

Have someone infiltrate a team's front office, kinda like The Departed. Have someone's nephew intern at rival club. Doesn't have to blood relative, could be twice removed. Whatever. But start working there and get hired. Work their way up through the ranks. Hell it doesn't even have to be in the scouting department or anything like that. Just having someone inside a team's IT department could grant you a treasure trove of scouting notes sent back and forth via email. Anything to get a leg up on intel.
i think you get this intelligence
cosmicj : 3/29/2024 11:42 am : link
from above board phone calls between GMs and assistant GMs, not some covert action.

there’s plenty of evidence that Schoen is talking to his peers across the league continuously. the moment Burns hit the trade market, Schoen was all over it with a trade offer. And Carolina’s front office is marked by instability and chaos, a situation that makes clear communication with decision makers difficult. i bet he has good relationships with many other GMs and trade’s information with them regularly.
