NFT: Stop twirling your spaghetti

Bill in UT : 4/1/2024 3:31 pm
Just finished lunch and I had leftover meatballs and spaghetti. And I did the unthinkable- I cut my spaghetti with a knife and fork into pieces just under and inch long. I don't do it all the time, but I do it often. Reasons? I try to stay lower carb, even with my cheat meals. I eat less spaghetti when I cut it. Most times I don'dt want more than 1 or 2 strands on my fork and it's really a bitch to pick out that small amount and twirl. It helps me proportion better, I just just as much as I want per bite. It's easier to get "pieces" on your fork-meatballs, meat sauce, veggies, clams, etc. And it's neater, no spaghetti sauce on my chin or clothes. And I don't have to debate "spoon or no spoon" for twirling:) I don't know if it's a big an offense as eating pizza with a knife or fork, you'll have to weigh in on that. Just thought I'd mention it to those of you who have never seen that before. And despite my thread title, I'm fine if you continue to twirl away. And I hope this doesn't cost me my honorary Italian status.

the pizzas are not cut. They are served in a
portion for one person (admittedly a good size portion) and are intended to be eaten with a knife and fork. Sliced pizza is yet one more American thing.

Oh and by the way, pasta is neither broken up before cooking nor twirled in a spoon in Italy.

Sorry to hurt anybody’s feelings…

Never more than 2 - 2 1/8 ounces. Carb control.

Yes, I twirl - with a tablespoon!

That's what my Itie momma taught me.

Not sure what you mean by veggie pasta. Something 100% veggies, like zoodles? Or dry pasta that"s a blend? Zoodles are great nutritionally, but I hate them as a pasta substitute. If a dry pasta, could you give me a brand? I've looked at a few and they're notmuch better than traditional pastas, about 30-35 gms of net carbs per 2 oz serving, plus I think they cost considerable more.

Costco carries a black bean pasta I am a big fan of and recommend. It is surprisingly tasty, packed with protein and fiber, and very filling.

I'm not in Italy, or even metro NY, lol. Very few real Italians around here to judge me
Mrs. in UT will not allow me to break spaghetti before cooking. But I do have one dish, fideos, that uses spaghetti broken into 1 inch pieces and toasted. She's ok with eating that.

I'll look the next time I go, but black beans are pretty high in carbs, all beans are. At least they have some fiber

Most of the stuff you cook comes with rice so you don't have to worry about twirling :)

Attached is the product (Amazon), with 11g of fiber and 19g of total carbs the 8g of net carbs is a huge bump from regular pasta which is about 36g on average for the same portion. Plus 25g of protein vs the standard 7g.

The chef's secret to twirling.... Make macaroni!!!
I just finished dinner, leftover macaroni with what we used to call meatballs & gravy. Now they call it 'Sunday Sauce' I am one carb stuffed & happy fat guy right now. I also just told my wife that I can't wait to get these carbs out of my system. Tomorrow is hard boiled eggs & grass fed steak day.

Do you know the difference between Spaghetti & Meatballs & Sunday Sauce? The difference is about $5 a plate! It's all in the wording.

yeah, but you can make it up in volume. You can only serve Sunday Sauce once a week, then it's called Leftovers :)

This is from Amazon. You've also seen them in Costco. If so, do you remember how the price compares? I've never noticed them at Costco, but I haven't been looking for them specifically. If it's not cheaper, I'll just order from Amazon.

I just included that link to show the label and nutrition info since Costco doesn't have it listed on the website, but it is cheaper at my local Costco than Amazon for sure but I imagine it varies. I've also seen it at my regular Publix and will grab it if it is in stock so I'm sure other chains carry it to keep an eye out, sometimes it is in an odd spot.

Saw my grandfather doing it growing up. Tried it very late in life after scoffing at the folly of a spoon and fork to eat spaghetti. It changed my pasta eating life. Sublime methodology.
