WTF is up with Waller?

SFGFNCGiantsFan : 4/1/2024 7:16 pm
It's now April. The draft is this month. Is this dude going to make up his mind if he's retiring or not? I think he owes the organization an answer prior to the draft. & I'm not saying if he retires we're drafting Bowers @ 6 or anything, but as the saying goes...shit or get off the pot.

Anyone else sorta annoyed with him dragging this out?
He just never should have mentioned it.
BleedBlue46 : 4/1/2024 7:18 pm : link
It's understandable to take his time, he made a mistake in mentioning he was thinking about it.
Honestly dude is cooked
Skittlebish : 4/1/2024 7:20 pm : link
so I find it hard to care whether he retires or not. TE is still a need regardless.
It’s called leverage
GiantTuff1 : 4/1/2024 7:20 pm : link
I forget who said it but I thought he was trying to force himself off the team and was using retirement as a threat to force the Giants’ hand. I’m not sure if he actually wants to retire or not.

Either way the Giants should make the decision for him if he doesn’t do it himself soon.
I’m pretty sure the Giants already know
Rudy5757 : 4/1/2024 7:21 pm : link
We signed a few TEs in FA. My hope is that they give Bellinger the opportunity to be a true 2 way TE and the other signed guys are the blockers.

My guess is he told the Giants already and they are just waiting on the official retirement announcement until after the draft.
He may have decided, but the Giants are trying to keep it quiet for
Ira : 4/1/2024 7:24 pm : link
whatever reason.
I assume it's all about money
Bill in UT : 4/1/2024 7:29 pm : link
If he can walk away with more by making them cut him as opposed to retiring, he's not gonna say a word. Same for the Giants.
Giants may have told him not to say he is or isn't
Blue21 : 4/1/2024 7:53 pm : link
at this point. They may know. But it's lying season.
I think he wants a trade

What would we get? A 7th round pick swap?

Unfortunately it doesn't make sense for any prospective partner to shell out picks for a 31 year old TE with a cranky hamstring and a 14 mill cap hit. Day 3 swap and an agreement to eat some of the salary is the best I'd dare to hope for.
Ha

He's still a ... thing?

Did he toy with retiring? I've been living under a little rock with the Giants lately lol
I know he is messing up my Mock Drafts

LMAOOOOO
Do I take a TE in the 3rd or 4th round or not???

This. I think he was being honest about his feelings about it. And if that's the case, he probably won't know until he starts ramping up during OTAs. So, it's going to be a while. And who gives a shit anyway? Remember Strahan doing this as well?

Him mentioning it seems on purpose
UConn4523 : 4/1/2024 11:40 pm : link
put the pressure on to get released or traded, seems planned.
I for one don't think this is a ploy,
BleedBlue46 : 4/2/2024 1:20 am : link
He's not trying to force his way off the team. I think he's a human and is emotional about it and let it slip. I bet he comes back for another year, he isn't going to get cut. He will either retire or play here.
If back….
thrunthrublue : 4/2/2024 1:58 am : link
He will peak in July, by sept his hammies will act up…..his disappearing act in ‘23 rivals Houdini….overall a bad move by JS……..
2 thoughts mentioned above seem the best bet

Giants already know and he wants a trade (not as sure about the latter).
If he is not sure whether he wants to play...
DefenseWins : 4/2/2024 6:04 am : link
then I do not want him back. His heart is not in it and IMO, his decision is likely more about whether he needs the extra year's worth of contract money.

No thank you.

I suspect a big part of it is he's a recovering opioid addict who once overdosed on Fentanyl, and last year he dealt with what's commonly understood to be a very painful nerve issue in his hamstring.

I bet he has to be very careful with how he treats pain, and that his nerve condition is often chronic. So playing more football is a serious decision for his health and sobriety.

He expressly said it wasn't a money issue, and that's he financially secure beyond his dreams. Whether that's true or not, that's not something a guy says who's looking for leverage to be traded and draw the same compensation.

Whether he's cut or retires has the same cap impact on the Giants. His health makes him an unreliable player the Giants have and will look to replace regardless.
He does what he
section125 : 4/2/2024 7:30 am : link
does and it doesn't really affect the Giants one way or another in reality.
If they want a TE in the draft, then get one. They will need one eventually. But I doubt TE is in their plan this draft anyway.

Just put it in your head he is gone and forget about him.
I don't
Lines of Scrimmage : 4/2/2024 8:40 am : link
think it benefits the Giants at this point to have all the details out with this situation. I expect more clarity after the draft.
Waller has become as unlikeable a NYG as any in recent history.
ThomasG : 4/2/2024 9:13 am : link
I don't criticize the move taking a chance on him but Waller is unreliable to get on the field each week, unreliable to make impactful plays and unreliable to stay uninjured.

He's an expensive whatever.
Embarrassing trade.

he is Toney, it was why he was traded. NFL teams don’t give up on talent like Waller without a reason.
They should cut him
JoeyBigBlue : 4/2/2024 11:47 am : link
This wait and see game is tiring. He wasn’t good last season. I’d prefer they use the $6m savings elsewhere.

I agree, he's a human and not trying to get more money. The opioid issue is very likely the crux of it, good call.

christian : 4/2/2024 12:06 pm : link
The cap implications also work fine for the Giants. Right now they have ~1M in effective cap space, assuming they draft at their slot and make all their picks.

They'll need to create 7-10M in additional space to operate through the year.

Whether Waller retires or is cut, if it's designated as a/or happens after June 1, the Giants will net cap savings of ~11.5M on 2024.
He isn’t retiring

Where else could he make millions of dollars for about two months of work?
