NFT: Yanks at Sneks (D-Backs)

Mike from SI : 4/1/2024 9:55 pm
Luis Gil's first start, against Ryne Nelson.

Yanks loaded the bases in the first against the youngster but Verdugo popped out.

Gil about to toe the slab.

Against their perennial tormentors the Trashtros and last year’s NL champs.

Without the reigning AL Cy Young winner.

With Aaron Judge rusty and ineffective at the plate.

No problem, 5-0. Wow. Hard to avoid giddiness at this start. Volpe showing why he was a top 10 prospect.

Looks poised to have a monster year.
Maybe I can stop lamenting the fact they drafted Volpe ahead of Gunnar Henderson!
What Blake and this organization can do with tomato can journeymen

And turn them into quality relief arms is staggering. It's really a superpower. If Volpe can be a gap to gap OBP machine it really will make this offense.
I'm obsessed with Volpe's development

pretty much convinced as he goes so goes the Yanks these next 5-10 years. Develop another star from the farm like we did Judge and we will win a WS soon enough. Volpe looks great. Totally looks sustainable and we already know his D is good enough at short.

Also, I am fascinated with Soto's at bats. His overall demeanor is just awesome. Love how he carries himself. There's good players who put up good or great numbers and then there are guys like Soto. It's not all numbers. We needed that presence here.

Cabrera said this in a recent interview for an Athletic article, and it hit me it’s no doubt a meaningful thing in the clubhouse - Soto being not only a stud and team leader, but comfortably bilingual in Spanish and English is a big deal for the young Spanish speaking Latin players on the team. Kinda bridges a gap for guys not yet be fully fluent in English
Volpe is destined for the leadoff spot.

Glad the obsession with launch angle was softened for at least some of these guys. Volpe's a baseball player now.
It is nice to get this production

from the young guys knowing we have Dominguez, S. Jones, Peraza, Arias and several others getting closer to the bigs. May make the Yanks or may be traded for pitching but, with health, the prognosis is improved.

little 7 game road trip to begin the season is a blessing. Looking at the weather, and what the Mets are already dealing with (already one postponement, with more likely on the way this week), we could have have had a bunch of doubleheaders already on the future slate. For a team that where the pen is typically an advantage in a series, those stacked games would have mitigated their usage a bit.
