id still like to see him get a shot at some point. i know he isn't mcneil defensively, but i could see him having a sneaky chance to hit in mlb. he's turning 27 so i guess he's officially a nonprospect now but if there's a guy in the org who has a surprising august like DJ last year, id guess it's him.
acknowledges he doesn't have any scouting background at all. He's a data forward baseball writer anyway...
"The cutter/slider has ideal velocity at 86 mph, and is the type of pitch that usually pairs very well with an elite riding fastball. It’s currently mowing hitters down with a 62% whiff rate and 32.5% swinging strike rate, and given the quality of the fastball, I wouldn’t be surprised to see it continue to perform really well as he moves up. It’s somewhat concerning that he doesn’t have the confidence to throw it to lefties, where he prefers to throw the curve and change.
This is the Jared Jones / Spencer Strider template. In my opinion, Tong is the fourth-best pitching prospect in all of the minor leagues right now."

Wow that is really high praise. I need to see more to even think he's at the top 40 right now.
? is that why they won't sign Alvarez to an extension?
He's a catcher yes, but no. He's 17 and likely 4-5 years away if they are lucky. LAD routinely adds top C's despite having Will Smith and Cartaya. They used their top pick in 2022 on Dalton Rushing.

Kodai Senga (strained shoulder capsule) faced batters today for the first time since February. He says he'll need to do so twice more before a rehab assignment.
"As long as things keep going well, I think I'll be back right around [May 27]," Senga said through an interpreter.
second source says Jett Williams will indeed hit the IL "soon" but doesn't think it's a major injury aka won't miss "months". I guess we shall see.

@AnthonyDiComo
For those wondering about Mets prospect Jett Williams, who hasn't appeared in a game since April 21: he's dealing with a bit of right wrist soreness. Doesn't seem to be a serious issue.

@mets affiliates slow to post pitching probables this morning but @BKCyclones have Douglas Orellana starting he of the 1.35 era and 18 k’s over 13.1 innings so far in 2024. Tomorrow is his birthday, he’ll be 22.
Why He’s Here: 1-0, 2.45, 11 IP, 2 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 3 BB, 10 SO, 2 HR
The Scoop: In two home starts versus Columbus, Scott kept rolling with 10 strikeouts and three walks in 11 innings. On the season, his 31.9 K-BB% trails only Paul Skenes and Jack Leiter among Triple-A starters. While Scott has been difficult to hit, he has given up at least one home run in each of his five starts, for a total of seven on the year. That is worth monitoring as Scott’s callup nears. (ME)
Dom Hamel going today for @SyracuseMets First start after winning International League pitcher of the week. Over his last 3 starts Hamel has pitched 15.2 innings allowing 11 hits 5 walks while punching out 24 with a 2.29 era #Mets
@mets have released Taylor Kohlwey. Kohlwey went 3/34 with @SyracuseMets. Presumably, this will open up some more time for players like Carlos Cortes #Mets
argument against extending Alonso Link - ( New Window )
I was thinking of offering something like 7yrs/$180M as a hard line max offer and thinking Alonso might reject it. This zips projection says I'm overpaying by like $100M! Jeez.
Alonso always seemed the type to age better than Prince Fielder, Ryan Howard, Mo Vaughn, and these other 1B big slugger types.
Mets are going to have a tough decision. Alonso is on pace for another big year (even with the balls appearing to be a little dead again) and the offense needs an upgrade even if they keep Alonso.
@RumblePoniesBB officially place IF/OF Jett Williams on the 7 day IL with a "right wrist soreness" per @AnthonyDiComo it doesn't seem to be serious #Mets
argument against extending Alonso Link - ( New Window )
Don't need to convince me. I let him walk or trade him at the deadline if the Mets are not in contention and if there is good value, trade Marte at the deadline (again if the Mets are not in contention), and reset on the LT if possible, and let Stearns build a team.
I might even trade Diaz if there were a good market and the Mets fall out of contention. If you look around the league a lot of the leading closers so far weren't expected to be dominant closers. Jason Foley? Robert Suarez? Mason Miller (great stuff sure, but 0 MLB saves coming in to the season and was a starter in the minors)?
even with his resurgence likely has negative trade value thanks to his atrocious defense. He's been worth 0.2 fWAR over 25 games and is owed 19.5 this season and 19.5 next.

I'm excited for Baro and Ewing also from last year. Hoping since the was left back he has a Morabito like season with FCL. Wonder how much the early start of FCL season plays into these decisions as well.
it figures, the first time in 3 years I don't have Trout in fantasy baseball and the first time he makes it to May. Welp....Trout has a torn meniscus and needs surgery, best case out 6 weeks.
that contract is an albatross.
I thought a few years ago he had a shot at challenging Ruth/Bonds with a good decade through his 30's in terms of fWAR now he's limping to retirement. He's still a HOFer, but more like Griffey Jr from a career arc than Bonds and will likely now wind up a great player but not in that greatest of all time discussion like he could have been.
Infielder/centerfielder Jett Williams, the Mets’ top prospect, went on the seven-day injured list with Double-A Binghamton because of a right wrist issue.
After he jammed it, sat out for a week and didn’t feel well enough to play, the Mets opted to officially sideline him. He might get a cortisone injection, and the Mets are inclined to take his return very slowly, given his importance to the organization.
Before getting hurt, Williams was off to a slow start at the plate, batting .180 with a .668 OPS. He also played several games at second base, his first professional exposure to that position, his potential eventual defensive home.
Hope he didn't get hurt again. Weird for him to sit right after getting back unless they're taking it slow. With Mondays off would have thought he'd be in lineup.
Get Morabito up. As I said yesterday Orellana back on the radar big time. Another nice outing.
Luke Ritter and Cortes should get a shot eventually I hope.
Saul Garcia (received a nice report from @BaseballAmerica before the season) has been activated from the 7 day IL. Garcia has stuck out 7 over 3.2 innings of work for @stluciemets. He figures to join @BKCyclones shortly

I wonder if he got plunked on the wrist. A lot of little bones in the hand/wrist area....hope nothing's broken in there.

Mets have signed former Brewer Mike Brosseau to a minor league deal.
He has played SS, 2B, 3B, 1B, RF, LF and has even pitched 10 times in the majors.
The 30-year-old has a career .741 OPS and a 2.79 ERA in MLB.
