Thank you Dan and Optimas. After NY Giants football this is the second best thing about this site!
Ditto to this. I grew up reading Baseball America before I hit puberty. With a demanding career, wife, and 4 daughters don't always keep up on it like I used to. Dan's info has been fantastic to follow.
BTW, I laughed at your username on a Mets thread. What else can you be at this point? Crushed and dejected?
affiliates not on the schedule this week but with the Mets this bad, I highly recommend keeping an eye on the free MILB.TV schedule. They are offering more games this season than ever before.
The info that Eric, GF, and yourself give are invaluable. It'd be better put to use somewhere where it's consolidated. As you said before, this year is about the kids anyway. This can help us to focus more on them. A six-month long thread wouldn't have worked; however, a monthly thread can. It's less likely to get lost in the wash, so to speak.

Dan's a gem. We're fortunate to have him. Let him cook.
buzz around this kid (at least from the Mets). We shall see, the transition from DSL to FCL isn't always so smooth but I'd file this kids name away. Link - ( New Window )

With the FCL season starting a month earlier I wonder if we'll find out which guys are stateside soon. Hoping Rosa, Gutierrez, Larez (if suspension over) are here.

Larez has more time to serve and now Baptist may also be suspended. The aforementioned Cesar Rivera will be in the FCL, Jose Chirinos posted on instagram he's in Florida, so presumably he will be as well. Gutierrez is supposedly repeating the DSL (not official). Rosa is in St. Lucie right now so he's 100% playing for the FCL team.
don't personally believe the Mets will trade Alonso. Rental players only bring back so much nowadays and the impact on the fan base/reaction would likely be weighed against the fact "worst case" they would get a pick for him if he left via FA (which I also don't expect to happen). I think they keep Alonso long term ala Nimmo. There is a valid argument for trading him, I just don't expect it.

You think it's the whole "face of the franchise" thing? Kind of like David Wright was?

Yes. I do believe it's part of the Alonso valuation including recent comments from Cohen.
@mets have $6,261,600 in IFA money for the upcoming IFA period that opens 1/15/2025 and runs through 12/15/2025. 14 teams have more, 11 teams have the same pool #Mets

Good stuff thanks. Guessing Yovanny Rodriguez will split time at C.

Agreed with this. And re the other comment of the Mets needing frontline pitching, yes they do. They aren't getting it for a deadline acquistion of Alonso, however.
as you know, they have 2 DSL teams so if Yovanny doesn't skip the DSL, they will likely just put Rodriguez/Gutierrez on 2 different teams. Gutierrez is glove first so if he's not a catcher he's probably not going to be a big leaguer. They have already placed a few players on DSL rosters already. I'm curious to see how Bohan Adderley does, big time pure athlete, the kind they haven't really had major success developing in recent years.
way I'd sign Alonso long-term with the team in this condition.
it makes zero sense.
the Mets are not a player away (or three players away).
And it's not that Alonso isn't a good player he is, but he's not what the Mets need to win. I don't even see him moving the needle which is probably why despite the power, he has relatively low fWAR every year (relative to what you'd expect for a consistent 40+ HR guy).
Alvarez is the only player I'd sign to a long-term contract not already on one.
He seems like future captain material. Just from the past year he seems like he can be a Pudge Rodriguez type.
unfortunately teams have wisened up when it comes to deadline deals. Teams aren't trading high end SP or high end SP prospects for rentals. Now of course, you can get lucky and trade for a "lesser" name and have the guy develop but the Beltran/Wheeler era is really a thing of the past.
i do think this core is very much auditioning for their futures here, and i dont think it's simply individual stats. it's playing the kind of fundamentally sound winning baseball stearns wants.
this core group has had 3 years of letdowns. if they dont show that they can play winning baseball here I think 1 or more may be the guys cohen eats money to move this summer if the right deals are out there. nimmo and lindor are under contract a long time so that may not be logistically feasible and you would think they fit what stearns wants but who knows. if things are bad enough he may want to start as fresh as possible.
worse today than the Megill, Severino, Lucchesi types? He's already 24 years old and Mets would save a year of service time in 9 days.
If it's going to be a transition year, then they probably shouldve be giving more playing time to guys like Scott and Vientos rather than washed up dudes like Stewart and Wendle IMO. Seems like this would've been a perfect opportunity to give Vientos some regular DH ABs before JDM was ready.

when pitchers come up is less urgent than position players. last year was his max innings thrown at 87. before that his max was 58. i would guess he's capped below 150 innings this year. there will be injuries or non-performers so he will have a spot whenever he's ready and there will probably be more than enough time left in the season to max out however many innings he has at big league level.
Innings limit should be interesting. He only has something like 50 career innings pitched over 3 NCAA seasons. I can’t see them allowing him to throw more than 80 or so innings but we shall see
for the praise guys. I'm just oddly obsessed with minutiae sometimes, it helps in cases like this, less so in other areas of life haha
I worked with a guy like that (a Brit named Kev). You remind me of him. Minutiae was his thing. He was the most helpful guy on our teaching staff IMO because of it.
like Daviel Hurtado will skip the DSL. The Mets signed him out of Cuba last season but he didn't pitch due to injury (never announced what), in fact both of their top IFA arms missed 2023 due to injury (Hurtado and Wilmer Lugo). Hurtado got a relatively large bonus for an IFA pitcher (640,000).
And they should also work hard to dump off McNeil and the expiring pitchers if they can hold up. I’d personally also trade Diaz this year or next. I think the economics and return improve next year though with a clear bill of health and good repertoire.
Fans aren’t coming to ballpark or buying Alonso jerseys if the Mets are a below average team next couple seasons. Cohen needs to let Stearns run this ship ruthlessly.
I understand that this rarely happens but the Mets would
be uniquely situated to trade Alonso at the deadline and then try and sign him back. It's highly unlikely Alonso extends with whatever team "rents" him given his agent and I'd find it highly unlikely that he'd rule out the Mets from bidding on him just because they traded him to a contender in a year when the team was bad. Alonso might even be appreciative of such a trade since it would take the qualifying offer out of the mix and probably help him a bit in FA.
The real issue would be the return. Even in a lost year, season ticket holders and attendance does matter. Someone needs to offer something that significantly better than a comp pick.

This will be a great way to keep track of how the kids are doing. May be the only joy we get this year.
It's all we've got to look forward to. I can't believe we've got to watch one of Zack Short, Joey Wendle, or Tyrone Taylor in the srting lineup for the foreseeable future.
Now that’s the entirety of the promoted DSL to FCL players. Unclear what this means for Jeremy Rodriguez who is currently at the facility. Either he’s shockingly skipping the FCL or he’s just not being included because he’s already stateside
Yovanny Rodriguez on Orange and Gutierrez on Blue. Yovanny could be a top 10 prospect in this system with a big year. Probably not that high but that kind of talent.
Scott is a fantastic development story. When the Mets popped him out of Florida in 2021, he had a sound delivery and an excellent pitching body, but his stuff needed refinement. This spring, scouts have reported a tighter, more powerful slider to go with a much-improved changeup as well. Scott’s fastball has added velocity as well, giving him a chance at a potent three-pitch mix that he can use to pound the zone and get whiffs. He’s knocking on the door of the big leagues and could wind up as a nice rotation piece in short order.
Brandon Sproat, RHP, Mets
The Mets have long been admirers of Sproat’s stuff, having drafted the Florida product twice. Multiple scouts who saw the righthander in the Spring Breakout game came away impressed. Sproat combines excellent pure stuff, including a mid-90s fastball, a nasty changeup and a 60-grade slider, into a strong, athletic body that should allow him to hold up against the rigors of a full starter’s workload. He’s also worked to tweak the mechanics in his lower half in order to achieve a more consistent movement profile on his fastball.
The Orioles farm is ridiculous. 29 runs in Norfolk last night. Holliday, Kjerstad, Mayo, Norby, Stowers, Basallo to go along with Adley, Gunnar, Cowser, Westburg, and the lone pitcher Grayson.
Rodriguez joined the Mets last August in the trade that sent Tommy Pham to the Diamondbacks. He performed in the Dominican Summer League, hitting .293/.411/.467 in 51 games, and then was appointed to the Mets’ Spring Breakout roster—he delivered an RBI hit—at the tender age of 17. Rodriguez has a sweet lefthanded swing and exemplary feel for the strike zone at a young age. He should hit the ball harder more consistently as he matures. Rodriguez is primarily a shortstop but many scouts project him to second base.
RHP Brandon Sproat, Mets
High-A Brooklyn | Age 23
The Mets drafted Sproat in the second round last year out of Florida, where he was one of the hardest-throwing starting pitchers in the nation. He didn’t pitch after signing but made a huge impression at the Mets’ Spring Breakout game by generating multiple whiffs on his high-90s fastball and high-80s slider as he retired three Nationals batters on seven pitches. Sproat has the type of raw stuff and athleticism to start. It will come down to control and how well he adapts his Gators repertoire to more of a professional one, a la former Florida reliever and current Mets top pitching prospect Christian Scott.
The Orioles farm is ridiculous. 29 runs in Norfolk last night. Holliday, Kjerstad, Mayo, Norby, Stowers, Basallo to go along with Adley, Gunnar, Cowser, Westburg, and the lone pitcher Grayson.
Damn. Nothing but good news for them. Angelos selling the team makes things even better for them than before.
i get what they were trying to do but dj stewart (and short, and wendle) arent the guys to do it for. jmo.
i know jdm is on the way but they should have given him the 2 weeks and then decided what to do after that. baty obviously isnt getting displaced if he continues playing good defense.

I really want to believe it wasn’t because they were afraid Vientos hitting well would have made it a tough decision… that would be very shortsighted.

at this point i believe the smoke around vientos that sometimes he must rub the decision makers the wrong way. his interview after JDM got signed he was visibly shaken. BVW made public comments over the years supporting him when the organization wasnt giving him shots. i have no trouble buying some of what shecky hinted at that he acted too comfortable or didnt have a good poker face after the JDM signing.
so I think they probably didnt want to reward sulking, and probably also came up with some rationale that there wasnt a role for him, but i also think they were wrong because they made themselves look like total hypocrites after preaching patience/development all offseason.
Doesn't Vientos have a history of being a slow starter?

Good for them. I have a number of O's fan friends and they have had crappy teams for 20 years.

Not to mention, I would think that Pete would appreciate the opportunity to finish the season on a contender. This isn’t the craziest idea.
RE: Doesn't Vientos have a history of being a slow starter?
Regardless, he should have started the season as the team's DH before JDM was ready. No reason for Zack Short to start the season here.
he was a traditionally slow starter pretty much his entire time as a prospect until last year - where he started pretty strong at AAA, but like this year probably because he was repeating a level he had already advanced beyond after having a strong springs (ops'd around 800 then went to AAA and ops'd 1.000+).
everything stearns said about both he and baty was correct in the offseason - he and vientos have advanced beyond AAA so anything other than time against MLB pitching is basically wasted time. it wont be seamless and they will go through struggles, but if this year is about developing when 2/3 of the lineup isnt hitting what is there to lose?

nice to see Mets/@BKCyclones RHP Calvin Ziegler back and healthy after a lost 2023. he was 93-96 today with three pitches working and struck out eight @WilmBlueRocks in a row at one point
Brandon Sproat, RHP, Mets: After the Mets struck gold with a former Florida reliever in Christian Scott, the team went back to the well in 2023 to draft Brandon Sproat. It was the third time Sproat had been drafted and the second consecutive year he was drafted by the Mets. Unlike Scott, Sproat has two years of starting experience for the Gators and flashes some nasty stuff. Sproat sits mid 90s on his four-seam fastball, mixing in a high-80s cut-slider, with a filthy changeup with serious tumble and heavy armside run, as well as low-80s curveball. The mix on paper is good and Sproat was fairly successful as a starter for two seasons in the SEC. If Sproat shows more refined command and execution he could jump onto the back end of the Top 100 list by mid-season. Sproat will begin the season with High-A Brooklyn.

Ramirez is definitely loading his hands out and higher and bringing them set earlier to a fire position. Wrists are perhaps quick enough to handle the still deep hand load. Mechanical teak that I begged for three years now has finally arrived. He's interesting again.
Is McLean hurt or he's only pitching? I thought we would see him at DH in games he isn't starting.
Clifford should have started in Binghamton. I hope this stadium stuff isn't in his head.
McLean is only expected to DH "occasionally". Stating the obvious but hard to both focus on trying to become a SPer and work on hitting at the same time.

Yeah that makes sense then. I was unsure how much they'd let him hit.
Really excited to see him pitch and Sproat. Kade Morris I'm interested as well. So much more to follow this year than the last couple.
has monster raw power but given his swing and miss issues, it should probably be considered an extreme long shot for him to remain a 2 way player for much longer. Hitting is hard enough when working on it full-time. He's one of my favorite prospects in the system but 124 ab's last season with OSU, 57 k's, 11 as a pro, 7 k's, seems unlikely he's going to be able to develop enough as a hitter for that to make a ton of sense.

Yohan Ramirez was designated for assignment.
is sulser as out of left field as it seems? of all the names in spring dont remember him being in the mix for a big league spot.
interesting how they gave ramirez and tonkin each a few chances early on and then made quick decisions to cut bait. i like that it seems decisive. carrying guys you are afraid to pitch is a great way to overuse the guys you dont want to overuse.

I wonder if Sulser might have an opt out? Not saying that's been reported anywhere but he only pitched 1 inning (not good) and he got the call.
I had no luck with a (admittedly quick) google search. Would a return by May be realistic?
Completely guessing but a mild hamstring strain is probably not something they are going to rush him back from and have it happen again. I doubt we see him before 3-4 weeks from now (best case).

So looks like it's Hall, De La Cruz, Ziegler, Sproat, McLean.
The Scoop: Tong is a native Canadian who transferred to Georgia Premier Academy as a high school senior in 2022. The Mets drafted him in the seventh round, attracted to his riding fastball properties and athletic delivery. This is the first season in which Tong has broken camp with an affiliate, and his first appearance for St. Lucie was a promising one. He struck out 11 Daytona batters in 4.1 innings using a 92-94 mph fastball and mid-80s cutter as his primary out pitches. Tong also got whiffs with a curveball and changeup. (ME)

if they dont want him at the mlb level then trade him. could have tucked him into the taylor/houser deal and it would have looked fair instead of lopsided.
JDM is 36 with known back issues. how about we wait until he shows he can do what he did last year before roster building around him? how is his possible eventual return to health now an immovable object after leaking for 5 months you werent interested in paying unless the price got too good to pass up?
2-3 weeks ago most had 0 expectations of baty off another mediocre spring. the mets benched him in game 2 for zack short. he has probably been the best met (obviously SSS but he's tied with Nimmo for .4 fwar and we know he has in fact helped them win close games and shown visible improvement in the field).
the only thing certain is you miss 100% of the shots you don't take.
1 more thing - given his likely innings limit a Scott promotion
shouldnt go much longer if he keeps throwing like this for 1 or 2 more starts. he only has a certain amount of innings, if he's dominating in the minors may as well call him up for anyone who isn't dominating.
not sure if there's some other way to creatively manage his innings (call him up for BP midseason maybe?) but hard to see any scenario where he stays healthy and is still pitching by the end of the year.

I had Eury, Strider, I have Nola and was considering keeping Bradish.
I go hitter heavy in fantasy. Pitching is too volatile. In a 13 keeper league for instance, I kept 10 hitters. Only kept Skubal, Gilbert, and Kirby. Then just load up on SP in the draft
Great watch. Kid can pitch. 19 K in 9 innings. Only 8 baserunners. Only minor concern to watch is HR. 3 already. Hopefully an anomaly. Haven't been this excited about a homegrown pitcher since Harvey (even though deGrom and Wheeler did turn out quite better). I suggested we do a hitters only league. and just to highlight my mush ability though, I had Trout the past two seasons. I don't think he made it this long either one. Now he looks like Trout of old and of course I avoided him.
I do have Elly though as a 19th round keeper, who has not struck out in his last three games and is (facetious of course) on a blistering pace:
“ Hearing @mets are high on RHP Kade Morris (their third round pick this year)”
Kade Morris in his 2024 debut: 5 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 4 K (65 pitches, 47 strikes).
Seems like his profile was similar to Scott's including pitching some relief in college. Wouldn't surprise if he follows same path or close to it.
Morris was more of a starter than Scott was in college. The issue with Morris is that playing for Nevada is very difficult to evaluate pitchers due to thin air and lots of bandbox stadiums in that conference. In Cape Cod League he was doing well limiting hard contact, but the K/9 was less than ideal.
pure still is a tier below Scott/McLean. As I said, the Mets were very high on him pre/post draft in part because they think he has room to put on more muscle/weight to his frame but as/is he's more of a back end type prospect. Absolutely nothing wrong with that outcome.

Scott's stuff improved as he's been going through the system. Very possible we see the same with Morris.

Scott's stuff improved as he's been going through the system. Very possible we see the same with Morris.
Sure but that can be said about any pitcher who is drafted. Scott isn't the usual outcome. Noah Hall, Wyatt Hudepohl, Jack Wenninger. I mean Mike Vasil, Dom Hamel, Tyler Stuart etc are all decent prospects but none have developed into a Christian Scott type of prospect.
Law had Morris as just missing the Mets top 20 with this note
"• Kade Morris was the Mets’ 2023 third-round pick out of Nevada-Reno, a righty with a low three-quarters arm slot and a 55 slider who pitched competitively in a high-altitude environment in college, probably a reliever but with a real shot to make it as a back-end starter."
He also oddly didn't have Ziegler, Stuart or McLean making it.
but i have no idea how teams justify spending multi-year $ on pitchers any more.
if i were them im just signing like 5 bassitts/manaea/colon/quintana types. get me to the 5th/6th inning with 3 or 4 runs allowed and let an elite BP take over.
eric cressey posted a stat in the last few days re pitching injuries that at the youth level the chances of injury over 100 innings pitched go up by like 3-4x (also that major arm recontrsuctkions are way up at the youth level). id imagine that's lessened but similar in the big leagues, just judging by how many fewer major arm injuries seem to occur for elite relievers who end up more in the 50-70 inning range.
scott is in a way a bit of a developmental question - if you knew he is plus pitcher in either role, would you 2x his injury risk in a role over 100 innings? or keep him below 100 innings but with half as much injury risk?

It might have been BA but I read something that Mets thought they could specifically improve his 4 seam and slider which is what they did with Scott I believe. Obviously it wasn't a direct comp but just reminded me of some similar things we've known that Scott developed. Doesn't mean it will go down the same way.
Acuna 1-4, 3b, 2 k's (Acuna is going to be a fascinating case study for @mets
ability to develop hitters. The raw pop is there but he often over swings to get there. Should be interesting to see how he develops)

Rudick's defense, he's coming off half of a missed season and shoulder surgery. He proved (when healthy) he can mash AA pitching so I'm not concerned with him.
Over 4 starts in AA he's thrown 23 innings allowing *5* (yes, 5) hits, 0 runs while walking 6 and striking out 25. Fully realize this is probably jinxing his start tonight but even dating back to 7/1/2023 (13 starts)
61.2 innings pitched 43 hits 17 er 24 walks 82 k's 2.48 era

Low-A St. Lucie righthander Jonah Tong (Mets) has been striking out batters at a hard to fathom rate.
In his second start of the season ... https://x.com/BaseballAmerica/status/1779556724040413497 - ( New Window )
Maybe somewhere in between? Seems like he has better stuff than Vasil. He was so bad last year though that I didn't think much of him. I don't know if they got him in the new lab and were able to unlock some stuff.
Nol-tani does it again! HR. Dude has serious power wow. Clifford 1-3. Ziegler 2 innings 0 runs 2 walks 4 k’s (unclear why his outing was so short), Ventura 7 k’s over 4, SRF 1 perfect 3 k’s #Mets

game 1
Vasil 3.1 innings 8 hits 5 runs 2 walks 5 k's (Barring something shocking, safe to say we see Scott before Vasil. Vasil now has an era near 6 with Syracuse (19 starts). I still think he's a big league SP (or bulk innings RP) but he has to pitch better.
Nunez 1.2 perfect 2 k's
Lavender 1 inning 2 hits 0 runs 1 walk 0 k (Really like Lavender but he's been pretty mediocre so far this season considering his great Spring, we'll see him in 2024 at some point)
Acuna 3-4, SB (he's struggled early so he needed this)
Ritter 2-3, HR
Vientos 0-3, BB
Thompson 2-3, 2 HR's (horrible start to his season so he REALLY needed this)
Game 2
Acuna 0-4
Vientos 1-2, 2 BB

Fujinami 0.0 innings 1 hit 3 walks 3 runs
Orze 1 inning 0 hits 0 runs 1 walk 1 k
Walker 1 perfect 2 k's
AA
Schwartz 4-4, HR, 2b (hot start)
Ramirez 3-5 (.994 OPS to open the season. He DOES have a .500, yes .500 BABIP with 29.4% K rate, so his numbers while obviously excellent need to be taken with a grain of salt right now)
Thomas 0-5
Parada 1-4, 2 k's (Great to see Parada off to a hot start with the bat (.951 OPS), defnse remains a major concern (1/9 throwing on the season, 2 PB's over 5 games)
BK
Clifford 1-4, K (rough start to his season)
McLean 1-4, HR, 3 k's (monster shot)
Lorusso 3-4, 2 HR's (first 2 homers of his career)
Ziegler 2 innings 0 hits 2 walks 4 k's
Ventura 4 innings 2 hits 0 er 1 walk 7 k's (Jordany Ventura in 2024 7.1 innings 5 hits 0 er 1 walk 12 k's. Unclear if he's now permanently a RP or they are simply piggybacking him early on )
SRF 1 perfect 3 k's
St. Lucie
Suero 0-4, K
Baez 0-4
Houck 0-3, K (struggling)
Hernandez 0-3, K
Morabito 0-2, BB, K
Banks 1 inning 1 hit 2 k's
Lawson 1 perfect 2 k's
Simon (grew up a Mets fan) 1 inning 2 hits 1 run 0 walks 2 k's
i wish we had more AAA data re the swing decision stuff
vientos is at a 15% walk rate and 22% k-rate right now, both bests for him at any level of minors at samples as big as so far or greater. gb% still high but i have to think his whiff/chase rates are a lot better to have improved the walk/k-rates and that's one of the more important things they are hoping to see from him, maybe even more than whatever happens on batted balls.
he had 4 hard hit balls yesterday and one traveled 375 feet so was prob a near homer somewhere so i think the ev is still there even if his slg is down a bit. that will pop up with 1 good game. .265/.379/.490 will obviously play and id imagine a hot streak will push it higher at some point.
Jarrett Seidler
@jaseidler
not that any of this means much of anything in any direction in an 8 game sample, but it's a week and a half of games in which his groundball and swinging strike rates have both skyrocketed, essentially he has hit three more groundball singles than expected"
I'm not hating on the kid but a .500 BABIP and 29.4% k rate need to be included in any conversation regarding his hot start.
@BaseballAmerica names Dom Hamel as a "Statcast Standout" for the past week noting his "eye-popping" 20+ inch IVB which they say is "elite". They note his FB velocity is average (92-94) but the ride helps him get whiffs
Some nice pitching so far: Ziegler 6 innings, no hits, 13 Ks
Tong: 8.1 innings, 3 hits, 21 Ks
The announce team said it appeared he was having issues with his command and they didn't want to push it this early in the season. It certainly was kind of odd. 2 innings 43 pitches is high but not exceedingly so. No injury announced but it's of course possible he was under the weather or something (minor) physically. When it comes to stuff like that we really get much. I mean Justin Jarvis just came off the IL, no word even what happened.
28 prep bats taken 1st round since 2020, @jettwilliams04 is one of only 4 to begin their second full season in AA, a 5th (Jackson Holliday) began in AAA

Subtle arm-angle change for José Buttó. Release height is down 2.5" from 2023, arm angle from 61° to 54° (see below). #Mets
Four-seam maintained shape, 15.5" vertical break, more elevation. Stuff+ models see it as average, but swinging strike rate jumped from 9.5% to 16%.
Mets Jose Butto’s arm angle is down from 61° last season to 54° this season. The result is a release height that’s 2.5” lower than last year. Despite the release drop, his fastball shape is nearly identical—15.5” vertical break. That’s marginally above-average ride for his current 5.4’ release. I do think something with this arm-angle change is driving the 16% swinging-strike rate on his four-seam, up from just 9.5% last year. Driveline Stuff+ hasn’t budged off an average grade (101). 🍎
His slider has turned into more of a bullet slider, down 5” in vertical break (more drop) and 2 mph in velocity from last year. Driveline Stuff+ at 100 and it’s generating a 47% swing-miss rate (33% is average). He’s also ditched his curveball from last year for a sweeper—82 mph with -7” vertical break and 13” sweep. That’s about 7” less vertical break than the average sweeper (dropping a lot more than average). You could argue it’s still a curveball based on shape, but notably different from his 2023 curve, 10” more sweep and 3 mph harder. Driveline Stuff+ of 91.
maybe its just me but i cant wait until we just trust our FO
we were putting arrows next to P, I'd have one squarely up for Joander Suarez, down for Mike Vasil. Neither are future aces either way but both are probably big league arms.
this early in the season but very roughly I'd have Christian Scott in a tier of his own with nobody else on his level Sproat probably #2 (even with the RP risk).

Who is the most underrated pitching prospect in baseball, Jim? -- @LanceBroz
Great question from my "Road To Wrigley" teammate Lance Brozdowski, who does a lot of data-driven analysis of pitchers when he's not working for the Marquee Sports Network. I considered Pirates right-hander Thomas Harrington (currently sidelined with a slight rotator cuff strain) and Diamondbacks left-hander Yu-Min Lin, but my pick is Mets righty Christian Scott.
Florida usually has one of the deepest pitching staffs in college baseball, so Scott made just five starts and was mostly a reliever in his three seasons with the Gators. A fifth-round pick in 2021, he broke out last year with a 2.57 ERA, .199 opponents' average against and 107/12 K/BB ratio in 87 2/3 innings while rising from Single-A to Double-A. He struck out 19 and walked just one over nine innings in his first two Triple-A starts this season.
Scott pounds the zone with quality stuff: a mid-90s four-seamer that elicits an exceptional amount of swings-and-misses, as well as chases for a fastball; an upper-80s splitter/changeup that neutralizes left-handers; and a tight mid-80s slider that shows flashes of becoming a solid third option. He flies under the radar more than he should because he's 24 and doesn't have a long track record as a starter, but he looks on the cusp of pitching in the front half of a big league rotation.

@lancebroz
I had him #21 in my top 40 pitching prospects, which I think would lineup to about a t100 guy https://lancebroz.substack.com/p/top-40-pitch
Daniel Wexler
@WexlerRules
Pipeline had at *least* 28 SP's ahead of him based on their top 100. To have nearly 30 (or more) SP prospects ahead of him is pretty wild to me. Considering his upper minors success, frame, stuff... underrated (and I'm not saying that because I'm a Mets fan).

New York Mets: Kevin Parada (No. 7) is hitting well for Double-A Binghamton, with a .294/.480/.471 line in six games. He hit his first homer of the season Saturday. Teammate Jett Williams (No. 1) is batting .185 through seven games with two stolen bases. Luisangel Acuña (No. 2) is batting .207/.233/.293 with a homer in 14 games for Triple-A Syracuse. Drew Gilbert (No. 4) landed on the injured list April 7 with a hamstring strain. He was 6-for-25 with a homer for Syracuse before the injury.

Was Leathersich before or after Akeel Morris? That guy had video game numbers. I remember one SSS in A or A+ ball he averaged almost 15 SO/9.
talking to a prospect writer and he projects both Tong and Ziegler as big league relievers. Also still believes Hamel "more likely than not" ends up in the BP.

Morris was drafted the year prior although his numbers weren't quite at Leathersich's level. Morris was also the youngest guy on the list for a number of years it seemed because we were constantly cheaping out with college relievers.

Petit actually had a decent major league career too. best out of the three we mentioned at least.

14 seasons! Mostly as a RP but that's impressive. Even Deolis Guerra 136 big league games pitched. The Mets took a step back in terms of latin american scouting but for a while they really did a strong job. They have some DSL kids to monitor, but too early to get too excited.

That I believe we traded to Miami but for the life of me I cannot who they were traded for (thought it was for a starting pitcher in one of Omar’s last years). The one reliever I believe at one point had a k/9 over 20 which was the craziest I have ever seen. Ironically I don’t believe he ever became much of anything but the other one did.
clue what Ziegler's injury is but it's getting to the point it's getting harder and harder seeing him remain a SPer. He's 21.5 with 53.2 career innings over 3 seasons.
Missed this! @BaseballAmerica with some love for Jesus Baez. "plus exit velocities" and "pristine swinging strike rates" "big arrow up" for Mr. Baez. Many of us (myself included) had him on our 2024 breakout lists. So far so good.

it's funny - we went in the year hyped about jett/acuna/gilbert and now it's non-stop pitching excitement. that's not a negative commentary on the first 3 either, it's a positive commentary on the system.
With a subtle shot at Buck. Never thought I’d see the day lol
Have to say Mendoza is beginning to grow on me. Actually answers questions, which is refreshing after last year. Admitted to being surprised that Pirates pulled Jones, didn't hide his happiness (as long as no injury, he made a point of saying). Little thing but rare/noteworthy.
For Morabito and Baez. I was a little nervy about Morabito last year since he started in EST but he's been really good since moving to full season.
Dan any idea on Wilkin Ramos stuff? Would be nice to get some more pen arms on the radar. 23 so maybe a tad old for AA but good numbers last year and a good start so far.
I was listening to the Syracuse game on the Internet Radio while doing some stuff. Scott's line doesn't do justice to his evening.
Scott 5.1 innings 3 hits 2 runs 2 walks 7 k’s
In the first inning, he gave up 2 HR's and a Double. And then NOTHING the rest of the way. Tis was his longest AAA outing. Something wasn't working for him early, he made adjustments. The kid is learning.

Don't have much AA data, but Parada is running a very high 38.9 Whiff%, which is a tad bit concerning.
He's young for the level, but the hot start is definitely encouraging, just some red flags in the contact department
wish we had some exit velocity on him, as a bat first player contact quality is going to be his ultimate carry tool. the topline is encouraging but only 1 XBH. only 7 games though tbf.

Wilkin Ramos 100% has big league stuff. FB up to 98 (sits 93-95 generally), rubber armed, good slider, command comes and goes (0 walks so far in 3 appearances) but when he loses it it completely loses it. Hes absolutely a guy who could be big league help (if he throws strikes) same could be said of Orze. I’m pretty surprised how much Orze has struggled. I expected him to be a viable member of the Mets bullpen by this time. Has overcome multiple bouts with cancer, stuff is legit, splitter is nasty, just hasn’t been able to throw enough strikes to this point
Hopefully, by mid-season some of the @stluciemets hitters are rocking to the point they are promoted to help @BKCyclones lineup. Looking at Morabito, Baez, Hernandez in particular. Cyclones lineup is pretty horrendous right now

The Mets are "very optimistic" that Brett Baty (tight left hamstring) will avoid the IL. He came in today feeling better than last night. "I think it just scared me," Baty said, in part because he's hurt that hamstring before.
Baty should be back in the lineup within a few days.

Trayce Thompson homers after walking in his first AB. Horrid start to his season, but suddenly heating up. Last 3 games 3 homers, 1 double, 3 walks, bringing his OPS up to .650 #Mets

didnt realize they were playing early, what's interesting is both singles were just 80 mph off bat.
so as good as everything looks right now, he isn't even "mashing" like he has in the past yet. what we are seeing is more contact, more walks, fewer strike outs. if this is a new baseline and he gets on one of his power streaks the OPS is going north of 1 maybe even 1.1-1.2.

Slump officially looks over. A 6th inning single for Trayce. We'll see if/when he gets his shot but he's likely the first OFer up if they have an MLB need #Mets
@stluciemets trails 5-1 bottom 6 but Jesus Baez with another hit and SB (3rd), he does have his 4th error, Houck continues to struggle (0-3 3 k's, if this continues it wouldn't shock me to see him sent to the FCL when their season opens), Morabito 0-1 K

It’s been clear for a while that the main accuser made shit up, I’m really surprised that no team has taken him up on his offer to play for the minimum. I guess they’re afraid of the bad PR, but I have to think this news changes that.
Just noticed Paul Gervase has only made 2 appearances and none since 4/13. Have to assume there is something going on physically with him. With Bing playing 2 today, have to assume he pitches unless he is indeed injured #Mets
When the Mets signed Baez out of the Dominican Republic for $275,000 in 2022, his power and ability to translate that power against live pitching stood out as an amateur. Baez is showing that mix of contact and damage this year as a 19-year-old, hitting .271/.327/.479 through 52 plate appearances for Low-A St. Lucie. It’s an aggressive approach he might have to reign in, but he doesn’t swing and miss much, striking out at just an 8% clip this year while consistently barreling the ball with an average exit velocity of 92 mph. With shortstop Colin Houck (a first-round pick last year at No. 32 overall) at shortstop for St. Lucie, Baez is primarily playing third base, a better defensive fit for him than shortstop.
is dealing with a back issue, source wasn't exactly sure what it was but it's lingered.
So not quite the loaded SP's as the past 2 days but @mets do have Tyler Stuart, 2023 4th round pick Wyatt Hudepohl (stuck out 9 over 4.2 his first start) and Noah Hall (looking to get on track after 2 rough starts) #Mets
funny he got hurt, but funny how this happened. A Mets prospect DM'ed me, said he follows me on twitter and wanted to give me some information on some player injuries as long as I didn't mention his name.

The Leiter's become the first brother duo to have 2 sons also play in the majors
Wasn’t there some controversy with Leiter around how fast his pitches were reported at?
Spin more than velocity. The Vanderbilt TrackMan was not calibrated properly (it's more than rumored that they did this on purpose) high picks = more recruits wanting to join your program
as much fun as the other nights for sure, but Hudepohl is interesting, Stuart should be a big leaguer (back end or multi-inning RP) he's a top 20ish prospect in the system, the Mets are high on Hall (he's struggled so far)
Very solid outing for Tyler Stuart- 5 innings 6 hits 2 runs 2 walks 4 k’s, Jett Williams has already been hit by *2* pitches, Rhylan Thomas on base twice 2B, BB, Schwartz 1-2 3B
Brandon Sproat
The former Florida Gator was a longtime target of the Mets. They drafted Sproat in back to back years, finally signing him last summer in the second round. Sproat was the starter for High-A Brooklyn at Jersey Shore on April 16. The opposing Jersey Shore lineup features Top 100 prospect Justin Crawford and two other Phillies Top 10 prospects.
Quick aside: Jersey Shore is one of the better broadcasts in the High-A South Atlantic league. The announcers made a point to confirm the velocity in the scorebug is linked to Hawkeye.
Sproat went four innings and allowed just two well-hit balls all night. The righthander mixed two fastballs shapes in a four-seam and two-seam at 94-96 mph touching 99 mph at peak. The two-seam averaged 10 inches of IVB with 14 inches of horizontal break and looked like the better of the two shapes. Sproat commanded the two fastballs effectively and showed the ability to use them in tandem.
Sproat mixed a trio of breaking ball shapes throughout in a high-80s cutter, low-80s curveball and a mid-80s slurvy slider. The hard cutter was his primary secondary and he used it effectively as a change of pace off the fastballs. His curveball was a chase pitch, but Jersey Shore hitters weren’t fooled. It drove zero swings and misses across six pitches.
While Sproat’s stuff is solid, he struggled to find a putaway pitch. He generated nine swinging strikes and seven were against fastballs. His struggles to land the curveball this day likely contributed to some of that. He wasn’t really challenging hitters to chase it. Sproat did show the ability to attack both sides of the plate with his fastball. He was still effective with the pitch even after his velocity dropped down in the fourth inning.
Sproat gave up a home run to the first batter of the fourth after he hung a breaking ball over the middle of the plate. Outside of that, Sproat made few mistakes throughout the outing. He did make an errant throw to first on a pickoff move. Sproat showed the ability to consistently get into two-strike counts, hinting that when his curveball is on he’s capable of racking up the strikeouts. His pitchability showed throughout this outing. It was clear, though, his stuff starts to wane the second time through the order.
Christian Scott
Scott, the Mets’ No. 6 prospect, is generating a fair amount of buzz among Mets fans. He faced Charlotte, the White Sox Triple-A Affiliate, on Tuesday night, striking out seven batters while allowing two earned runs over 5.1 innings. The Knights’ home ballpark in downtown is one of the more beautiful backdrops of any park in baseball, but Charlotte is also incredibly home run happy. This park seemed like a fairly good test of Scott’s mettle. The automatic ball-strike system also called the game, making Scott’s margin for error smaller.
The first inning was tough. Scott struggled with fastball command, showing a control over command profile. He wasn’t missing the zone with the pitch, but wasn’t landing the pitch side-to-side or high enough for a chase swing above the zone (something he does well). He located a handful of fastballs well, particularly a high inside fastball to Colson Montgomery for a swinging strike three. However, he parked a few fastballs right down Main Street that Danny Mendick and Oscar Colas (two batters later) smashed for home runs.
Colson Montgomery is a top-10 prospect in baseball.
Christian Scott has struck him out swinging both times he's faced him tonight. pic.twitter.com/yoS9P2oa5B
— Syracuse Mets (@SyracuseMets) April 16, 2024
Scott settled in as he navigated the bottom of the Knights order and the second time through the lineup. Scott showed two slider shapes in a hard gyro slider at 86-87 mph and a sweeper at 82-84 mph. He started to really mix up his sequencing, starting six of the next 10 batters with a non-fastball. He retired 12 of the next 13 batters he faced, striking out six.
There’s a difference between getting outs at Triple-A and success in the majors. Scott shows several good traits. He has a feel for a pair of breaking balls and a changeup. He isn’t afraid to mix up his sequencing. Scott will mix in right-right changeups and will show both slider shapes to lefthanded hitters in addition to the changeup.
Scott’s future performance is dictated by how well he locates his fastball up in the zone, and to both sides of the plate. When he lands his fastball early in counts, he has a variety of pitches to get hitters out. He’s an efficient strike-thrower with fastball velocity, some deceptive release traits from his low three quarters slot and feel for a trio of secondaries.

Bowden names his early candidates for comeback player of the year and Marte makes it
https://t.co/w4odm9JdLv
One note on Marte-Marte's wRC+ is up to 119 (not quite 2022 Marte 134, but far better than any reasonable person could have expected). Defensive numbers are crushing his fWAR (0.2 fWAR) tied with McNeil and Bader tied for 5th amongst @Mets
position players
Very slow start for Matt Rudick. Especially alarming is his 34% K%. Considering he only stuck out 15.8% in AA last season, one has to wonder if his shoulder is still bothering him or not yet 100%
Who doesn't like some too early for them to matter trends/numbers? Jose Peroza leads the system in wRC+ (176) Mark Vientos #2 (162) followed by Chris Suero (147)
Not sure HE qualifies as "under the radar" as some have him ranked as high as @mets #2 SP prospect but Blade Tidwell's start to the season sure as hell does 14.2 innings 8 hits 6 walks 18 k's 1.84 era/2.22 FIP
Jack Wenninger li.kely isn't long for @stluciemets
. The 22 year old 2023 6th rd pick has stuck out 18 over 12 innings while posting a 2.92 FIP. Not a ton to be learned about Wenninger in the FSL. I imagine he (along with Morabito) are among the first to head to @BKCyclones
So SRF is basically "back", David Peterson reportedly starting his rehab assignment "soon", unclear what Senga's next step is (sort of quiet since last week), 15 or so days for Raley (hopefully), Kranick pretty close, Megill (maybe I missed an update? Haven't seen much)
After another dominant outing, Mets RHP Jonah Tong moves into second spot among pitchers in Low-A, just behind Rays prospect Santiago Suarez. Under the hood, Tong’s four-seamer, slider, and curveball all grade out better than average on our internal Stuff+ model.
I should note that Tong is actually tied in second spot with Phillies RHP George Klassen, who put up another dominant start before being transferred to the Development List—a likely prelude to a promotion to High-A. Facing more college-pitcher-appropriate hitters will be a great test for Klassen, but his five-pitch mix all grade better than average by their metrics and not just based on his results. I expect his impressive start to continue once on the Jersey Shore (where I suspect the batters will be Down To Flail at his arsenal).

Megill threw a bullpen on 4/19 (I did indeed miss that). We should hear Senga throwing live BP soon (especially if he's indeed going to be back when he's eligible. Figure 4-5 rehab starts.
curious what Mets plans will be with Peterson. I imagine long man in relief but not sure.
i would guess they put him in AAA rotation and he/scott are basically fighting to be next guy up when they need a starter.
pretty amazing we are almost 1 month in without senga and with an injury to megill, and the 5th/8th SP on the preseason depth chart are both still pitching well enough to hold their spots.
houser has had 2 bad ones in a row but they were atlanta and lad. i think he gets at least 1 or 2 more starts before he gets bounced.
for Walker, if one wants to be positive, it could be a sign they do indeed expect Raley back in 15 days and don't want to make a 40 man move with Lavender. Lavender has also struggled a bit with his command so it could be that as well.

@stluciemets Mercedes?
Why He’s Here: 1-1, 3.00, 9 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 4 BB, 13 SO, 0 HR
The Scoop: Tidwell played to his strengths in a pair of home appearances at Double-A versus Reading last week. In both he piggybacked with a rehabbing Max Kranick. Tidwell struck out 13 of 35 batters faced, walked four and didn’t allow a home run. In his first appearance last week, Tidwell generated 14 whiffs on his way to 10 strikeouts. He has consistently shown swing-and-miss stuff since the Mets drafted him out of Tennessee in the second round in 2022. (ME)
Writer last week said he had Tidwell as the Mets #2 SP prospect (he admittedly saw Sproat as a RP) said his stuff is “outstanding” in short stints but more “solid/good” when asked to throw X pitches. Projects both he and Tong as RP long term and potentially good ones.

Jack Wenninger is at it again… 5 innings 1 hit 9 k’s. Wenninger over his last 13.1 innings has stuck out *24* hitters. I can’t imagine it will be long before he’s with Brooklyn
Nolan McLean with quite the bounce back performance so far. It’s the top of the 5th 5.0 innings 2 hits 0 runs 1 walk 6 k’s (1 HBP), 66 pitches through 5. He’s new to starting but I hope they let him go back out there for the 6th
Random thought today - should Mets have done Soto trade
I was an emphatic yes at the time and think I still am. I don’t remember what the exact comparable package was but probably something like:
Christian jones was probably the drew Thorpe.
Mets don’t really have a king - I think that piece would have been subbed to Gilbert.
Megill + drew smith + some other cringey arms they liked (butto?)
A lot for a rental but damn imagine Soto instead of marte hitting 2 or 3?

And some underwhelming starts here and there, the minors seem to have such a better vibe than this time last year when everyone was essentially playing poorly. Probably reflective of the increase in depth.
1 out, first and third and the Giants are bringing in their closer. He shouldn't be available for tomorrow so it would be extra sweet if they can tag him for a few runs here and tie the game/win!

Hey man. I've been pretty sick with pneumonia. Was too tired to do anything yesterday. Maybe today. Besides, the Mets have stunk up the joint the last three games. Would be nice of them to end this road trip today on a positive note before heading home tomorrow during their off day.
Stating the obvious but hopefully Nathan Lavender's injury is a minor one. Struggled a bit with his command so far this season but he looked like real potential weapon in ST
We thought position players would be strength this year but it's the opposite so far.
Also looks like we have a 50-60 pitch limit on the SPs at least for Brooklyn and St Lucie. Tidwell 62 last outing so maybe Bing as well. Scott 80 pitches last night. We'll see if that increases as year moves on.
(not a scout so keep that caveat in mind) says he thinks Tidwell is the second best SPer in the system. He spoke highly of multiple players as people but HE didn't think Sproat is going to be a SP long term (again, this is a player point of view).
Mets expect Alvarez back with the big club in Mid-June
"Rimas Sports, the agency that represents Alvarez, wrote in a post on Instagram that he would be back by mid-July. But Mets officials reiterated that mid-June is their full expectation."
curious with Scott's HR issue. A lot of them seem to be solo HRs. I wonder if it is just a result of being a bit too aggressive around the strike zone when he's not in trouble or something. I'd be interested in more information on that issue.

Breaking: The Giants scratched Blake Snell from his start against the Mets today. He’s on the IL with a left adductor strain.
maybe getting soto paid gets him back on track, but i think it's a real question whether or not boras will ever bounce back from this debacle.
JDM ends up taking a paycut off big year.
Montgomery fires him.
Snell hurt now.
Bellinger & Chapman got less than expected and who knows if they play well enough to even opt out.
if I were Alonso, I'd be seriously considering my representation heading into next year.
like Yamamoto/Ohtani, Soto will have a bidding war no matter who reps him. Will Alonso? Will he have a hot market like Nimmo or end up like the list above and Conforto?

Scout told DiComo he felt Scott's in-the zone command could still use some work.
"well known" I'm a huge Scott fan but looking deeper into his 2024 numbers you see reasons to understand why the Mets aren't ready to call him up. .152 BABIP, 100% LOB and of course the 6 homers allowed. It's no crime for him to not be a finished product, he's a converted RPer who was drafted after throwing *121* total career innings over 3 seasons with the Gators and had less than 100 professional innings coming into last season.
won't play every day initially, seemingly would bode well for Stewart sticking and Short being DFA'ed
You would think this would mean keeping Stewart.
"Martinez, 36, won’t be a literal everyday player, at least not immediately. His monthlong ramp-up lasted that long because of a bout of lower back tightness, a problem that has plagued him for years. He and the Mets agreed to a one-year, $12 million contract on March 21, a week before the season began.
Between Martinez’s physical condition and his personalized, abbreviated spring training, Mendoza doesn’t want to ask him for too much too soon.
“This is something that I’ll have a conversation with him [about], but out of the gate, I’m not going to run this guy and DH him every day,” Mendoza said. “He’s going to need some days. It’s one of those where I’ll sit down with him and put together a game plan here. It’s important. He’s too valuable for this team. We gotta take care of him.”"
seems like a very odd call up? is it due to an injury and he's next up?

his k-rate was an issue last year too:

Nae's assessment of Pete Crow-Armstrong is very fair
PCA is an elite defender, but has some very apparent offensive flaws. In his stint in AAA, he showcased very poor swing decisions with a 6th Percentile O-Swing%. He also lacks power, sitting at league average 90th percentile EV

Another add on, Pete-Crow Armstrong struggled with swings and misses the entire season.
In all 3 levels he played in (AA, AAA, MLB) his Whiff% was greater than 30%.

makes sense. i dont hate it, maybe gives him a chance to break out of whatever funk it seems like he's in and likely knows it's just a cup of coffee. hopefully a learning experience he can bring down to AAA and use to develop. im sure the defense will be great if nothing else.
but I really doubt anyone here really believes the Mets have 5 pitchers better than Christian Scott right now. He's an obvious great candidate to outperform his FIP (HRA rate can sometimes be fluky in short samples, while K/BB is much stickier faster) given that his XFIP is only 2.76 per fangraphs.
He has a 34:4 K/BB ratio so far this year. Really don't see a good argument to continue to start Houser over him. He turns 25 in a couple months. Enough already. Call him up.

The Mets themselves have said they don't think he's ready. They haven't developed a single SP even as good as Adrian Houser since who... Matz? So Gotta defer to Stearns who was with Milwaukee for Burnes, Woodruff, Peralta, and out of the Hader, Devin Williams
Hefner
"“If he could add those [other] pitches, then he turns into a starter and potentially a frontline starter,” Mets pitching coach Jeremy Hefner said. “If he doesn’t, then he’s still a good Major League pitcher. That’s a credit to him and his work ethic and all the guys who have worked with him. His fastball’s special, and it’s a Major League fastball. So if he can generally command the other pitches and keep them off balance just enough, he’ll be in a good place.”
One is the fact that he isn’t a finished product; if there’s a knock on Scott, it’s that he’s been homer-prone this season, allowing five in three starts -- something his Triple-A manager attributes to the right-hander’s fly-ball tendencies and a bit of bad luck. A rival scout who recently saw Scott said that while his control is excellent, his in-zone command -- Scott’s ability to place pitches exactly where he wants within the strike zone -- could still use refinement.
Then there is the matter of workload. As a reliever at Florida, Scott never threw more than 54 innings in a college season. His career high as a professional was 87 2/3 last year. The Mets don’t have a hard ceiling for Scott this season, but they plan on monitoring him closely -- something more easily done in the Minor Leagues than the Majors.
really sure how relevant his age is to be honest. If he were 22 but started 3 years at say LSU and then was drafted last season and dominated, wouldn't this hypothetical pitcher likely be "more ready" than a guy who is 24 but with limited innings under his belt? His "advanced" age may limit how much additional velocity he could gain (likely none) but not sure how much it should matter when judging how "ready" he is. His BABIP is the lowest in the entire IL at .152 (only 12 other pitchers are even under .300), only 1 P has a higher HR/9 and his FIP is 18th in the league.
His innings cap is probably around 120 innings, so waiting a month or so and calling him up and having him potentially be available all season sounds better than the Miami plan where they sent down Perez (and now Meyer). Don't think Mets fans have the stomach (nor the bullpen capable of handling) too many 59 pitch outings (Jared Jones).
remains a work in progress and that's okay. 2023 he pitched 6 innings or more innings 7 times/19 starts. He'll be here soon enough (likely by the time June has concluded).
If anything it's an argument to call him up now right? Would you rather those limited innings be at AAA or for the Mets where he can actually help? The AAA innings count toward the limit anyway.
Sure, we can just defer to Stearns but then that would shut down all discussion here.
Even if he's not a "finished product" surely he can keep on developing at the MLB level? Don't most SPs have to do that anyway? Seems like it's just delaying the inevitable keeping him at AAA. An organization's best coaches are on the MLB team, so I find it a stretch to suggest that somehow he's going to get worse coaching with the Mets and working directly with Hefner.
BTW, Houser's XFIP is 5.95 and he's striking out less than 5.6 per 9 and his BB/9 is over 6. Awful. The wild card race is going to be extremely tight and that's not gonna cut it. I'm pretty confident Scott would be better right now.
Anyways, Dan you're a great Mets poster on this site and I'm grateful for all you do here throughout the years. Please please don't take these posts as me coming at you, it's just airing my thoughts and venting a bit. I do see where you're coming from on the other side (posting the Hefner quotes) even if I don't agree. I'll let you have the last word on this if you want. LGM.
Vargas ever come back? I missed the weekend box scores.
Vargas is on the IL (again, with most things Mets minor league injuries, we don't get much information, not even clear what part of his body is injured, he's eligible to come off the IL on the 26th so I guess we'll see if we see him back in the lineup this weekend.
RE: I'm not sure what the workload has to do with it

Rumors 🔥🔥🔥Yankees top 2028 signing Angel Ozuna is actually 2 yrs older, and should be signing in the 2026 class instead of 2028 . Ozuna’s bonus amount was rumored to be in the $6M range
(ended up agreeing to a deal with the Twins instead).
the Marlins called up Eury Perez after 190 innings (at most - some of those minors innings came after his ML debut)
the Braves called up AJ Smith-Shawver after 146 innings.
The Mets don't seem close to calling up Scott after 170 minor league innings plus 120 college innings.
Neither Eury or Smith-Shawver had any college innings - which is why age is relevant. those two were 20 years old when they made their major league debuts.
Scott being 24 is relevant because he spent 3 years in college.
The Mets just don't think he's ready and/or they have a different organizational philosophy.
And I'm not comparing Scott to Eury Perez or Smith-Shawver for that matter - just using innings thrown as a metric for how or when other teams advance pitchers.

Not sure it's accurate they aren't "close" unless you think a month or so from now isn't close. Eury Perez was also sent back down last season to help curb his innings. He was called up in May, sent down in July and then came back in August. May is in a few days, and I don't think the Mets really plan on sending Scott down unless his performance calls for it.
also came up in late July because they had a need in the rotation, made 5 starts and is now back in AAA to open 2024. If the Mets have a need in July, they may well "rush" up a guy like Tidwell. The Mets likely hope to call up Scott and have him be with the big club the rest of the way and beyond.
I’m guess is Scott joins the Mets in 3-4weeks, joins the rotation, reasonable pitch limits, occasional extra days or even skipped starts and transitions later in the season to the bullpen vs. shutting him down. 120-130 innings. Would allow him a “full” workload for 2025. Hamel and Tidwell likely won’t have any caps this season worth worrying about. Scott the only one with a real “concern”.

Not confirmed but this kid may have been 4! Years older
Colin Houck 2 walks and a single. It'ss been a struggle early on for Houck, one reason for some optimism is he now has 12 walks over 55 ab's (obviously the 21 k's) would be the counter to that
Not sure if this is good or bad? Seems like the discipline to lay off bad pitches is a good thing and not easily taught/developed. He also seems to have some legit raw power, another thing that really can't be taught.

I'm probably missing something though.
32% k rate and slugging .339 so for right now it’s not a good thing. If he can start driving the ball while also walking then it’s obviously a good thing. He has 1 HR, 4 2B, 24 k’s over 56 AB’s
Only slugging .333 on the road (9 games) so it’s also not a case of “well, it’s hard for power hitters in Brooklyn). He’s still very young. But for whatever the reason post trade deadline both he and Acuna have seen their production fall off.
Vargas eligible to come off of the IL tomorrow. We’ll see if he does. Whatever his injury is has limited him to only 2 games played this season. For many, he was one to watch for this season so hopefully he’s back soon.
-No word on Lavender’s injury or what is ailing Jett Williams

Yeah that's not good. I remember seeing some clips of him hitting some long HR's last year (I think in Brooklyn?) He seemed to have some real pop in his bat.
Raw power rivals basically every hitter they have in the system outside of *maybe* McLean. His in-game power for whatever the reason hasn’t shown up (yet at least) on a consistent basis.

What's Clifford's most likely MLB comp? Are we looking at an Lucas Duda or Adam Dunn type player if he develops well?

Verlander can throw 139.2 innings before triggering his vested option. He's thrown 10.1 innings in 2024, please throw only 129.1 the rest of the way! LGM
this is why its worth rolling the dice on talent. not always but dont avoid talent just because the numbers arent perfect (pcas obviously far from perfect).
Alex Ramirez hitting the way he has so far is a great development. He's basically the only position prospect in the upper minors doing well so far. Parada with scary bad numbers.

could be Alcantara, Perez, and Luzardo. Just further cements my belief on building a team. Premium picks for position players. Pitching a numbers game.

There you go good find! So yeah hardly means anything at a level we'll care about haha.
I'm in central Jersey so I got lucky when the Yanks moved their AA fro Trenton to Somerset as it's easier for me to go watch games there.
▪️Kodai Senga (shoulder capsule strain) threw an up-down bullpen yesterday and is scheduled to face hitters for the first time on Monday.
▪️Tylor Megill (shoulder strain) is due to begin a minor league rehab assignment Saturday with two innings at Brooklyn.
I don't wanna see Megill back with the big team again this season unless absolutely necessary. Butto has earned his spot in the rotation. Are they sending Megill back to Syracuse after his rehab assignment in anyone's opinion?

did you see the TJ thread on Tong yesterday? it may have been in someones replies bc im having trouble finding but basically said he thinks wong is on track to be a top 100 prospect this year.
Did Scott really give up another first inning hr ?
It’s almost unbelievable at this point. Guy is untouchable in every other inning.
Nice seeing Tidewell dominate as well.
If going into season you said system would look great with pitching but horrible with hitting you would think they were insane. Yet that is where we are. Hopefully some of these guys, at least the ones not hurt, can turn it around. These injuries though are really going to hurt Gilbert and Williams from a timing standpoint.

I did and Eli Ben-Porat (who contributes to BA) absolutely LOVES him (though he acknowledges his love involves his projection that he gains more velocity)
But this obviously sounds more ominous. Hope the kid is well long term regardless.
Unlike the Tong/Gerber news which I can 100% say is accurate, the Williams "news" comes from somebody who acknowledges he hasn't heard the actual injury but that it would be "extended" stay on the IL. He gave an actual estimate but I don't want to suggest something is true until we hear more.
Game 1
Acuna 1-3, 2b
Ritter 1-3, K
Scott 4.2 innings 1 hit 1 run 0 walks 2 k's (Yup, again his 1 run allowed was a HR)

Game 2
Acuna 2-3, HR, 2 errors, OPS creeping up to a still non-outstanding .653 (6 for his last 20 with 3 extra base hits)
Gamel 1-2, 2B 2 k's
Thompson 2-4, K

id still like to see him get a shot at some point. i know he isn't mcneil defensively, but i could see him having a sneaky chance to hit in mlb. he's turning 27 so i guess he's officially a nonprospect now but if there's a guy in the org who has a surprising august like DJ last year, id guess it's him.
acknowledges he doesn't have any scouting background at all. He's a data forward baseball writer anyway...
"The cutter/slider has ideal velocity at 86 mph, and is the type of pitch that usually pairs very well with an elite riding fastball. It’s currently mowing hitters down with a 62% whiff rate and 32.5% swinging strike rate, and given the quality of the fastball, I wouldn’t be surprised to see it continue to perform really well as he moves up. It’s somewhat concerning that he doesn’t have the confidence to throw it to lefties, where he prefers to throw the curve and change.
This is the Jared Jones / Spencer Strider template. In my opinion, Tong is the fourth-best pitching prospect in all of the minor leagues right now."

Wow that is really high praise. I need to see more to even think he's at the top 40 right now.
? is that why they won't sign Alvarez to an extension?
He's a catcher yes, but no. He's 17 and likely 4-5 years away if they are lucky. LAD routinely adds top C's despite having Will Smith and Cartaya. They used their top pick in 2022 on Dalton Rushing.

Kodai Senga (strained shoulder capsule) faced batters today for the first time since February. He says he'll need to do so twice more before a rehab assignment.
"As long as things keep going well, I think I'll be back right around [May 27]," Senga said through an interpreter.

For those wondering about Mets prospect Jett Williams, who hasn't appeared in a game since April 21: he's dealing with a bit of right wrist soreness. Doesn't seem to be a serious issue.

@mets affiliates slow to post pitching probables this morning but @BKCyclones have Douglas Orellana starting he of the 1.35 era and 18 k’s over 13.1 innings so far in 2024. Tomorrow is his birthday, he’ll be 22.
Why He’s Here: 1-0, 2.45, 11 IP, 2 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 3 BB, 10 SO, 2 HR
The Scoop: In two home starts versus Columbus, Scott kept rolling with 10 strikeouts and three walks in 11 innings. On the season, his 31.9 K-BB% trails only Paul Skenes and Jack Leiter among Triple-A starters. While Scott has been difficult to hit, he has given up at least one home run in each of his five starts, for a total of seven on the year. That is worth monitoring as Scott’s callup nears. (ME)
Dom Hamel going today for @SyracuseMets First start after winning International League pitcher of the week. Over his last 3 starts Hamel has pitched 15.2 innings allowing 11 hits 5 walks while punching out 24 with a 2.29 era #Mets
@mets have released Taylor Kohlwey. Kohlwey went 3/34 with @SyracuseMets. Presumably, this will open up some more time for players like Carlos Cortes #Mets
argument against extending Alonso Link - ( New Window )
I was thinking of offering something like 7yrs/$180M as a hard line max offer and thinking Alonso might reject it. This zips projection says I'm overpaying by like $100M! Jeez.
Alonso always seemed the type to age better than Prince Fielder, Ryan Howard, Mo Vaughn, and these other 1B big slugger types.
Mets are going to have a tough decision. Alonso is on pace for another big year (even with the balls appearing to be a little dead again) and the offense needs an upgrade even if they keep Alonso.
@RumblePoniesBB officially place IF/OF Jett Williams on the 7 day IL with a "right wrist soreness" per @AnthonyDiComo it doesn't seem to be serious #Mets
argument against extending Alonso Link - ( New Window )
Don't need to convince me. I let him walk or trade him at the deadline if the Mets are not in contention and if there is good value, trade Marte at the deadline (again if the Mets are not in contention), and reset on the LT if possible, and let Stearns build a team.
I might even trade Diaz if there were a good market and the Mets fall out of contention. If you look around the league a lot of the leading closers so far weren't expected to be dominant closers. Jason Foley? Robert Suarez? Mason Miller (great stuff sure, but 0 MLB saves coming in to the season and was a starter in the minors)?
even with his resurgence likely has negative trade value thanks to his atrocious defense. He's been worth 0.2 fWAR over 25 games and is owed 19.5 this season and 19.5 next.
.@SyracuseMets Dom Hamel
@RumblePoniesBB Luis Moreno
@BKCyclones Douglas Orellana
@stluciemets TBD
I'm excited for Baro and Ewing also from last year. Hoping since the was left back he has a Morabito like season with FCL. Wonder how much the early start of FCL season plays into these decisions as well.
it figures, the first time in 3 years I don't have Trout in fantasy baseball and the first time he makes it to May. Welp....Trout has a torn meniscus and needs surgery, best case out 6 weeks.
that contract is an albatross.
I thought a few years ago he had a shot at challenging Ruth/Bonds with a good decade through his 30's in terms of fWAR now he's limping to retirement. He's still a HOFer, but more like Griffey Jr from a career arc than Bonds and will likely now wind up a great player but not in that greatest of all time discussion like he could have been.
Infielder/centerfielder Jett Williams, the Mets’ top prospect, went on the seven-day injured list with Double-A Binghamton because of a right wrist issue.
After he jammed it, sat out for a week and didn’t feel well enough to play, the Mets opted to officially sideline him. He might get a cortisone injection, and the Mets are inclined to take his return very slowly, given his importance to the organization.
Before getting hurt, Williams was off to a slow start at the plate, batting .180 with a .668 OPS. He also played several games at second base, his first professional exposure to that position, his potential eventual defensive home.
Hope he didn't get hurt again. Weird for him to sit right after getting back unless they're taking it slow. With Mondays off would have thought he'd be in lineup.
Get Morabito up. As I said yesterday Orellana back on the radar big time. Another nice outing.
Luke Ritter and Cortes should get a shot eventually I hope.

If Mets are doing awful close to trade deadline I’m thinking Stearns trades Pete
Not that I’m hoping but with Boras as agent he might be asking way to much
Plus we have a huge need for some front line pitching
Let me know your thoughts
Thx

I'd support this. Could always sign him back as a FA. I'm kind of with PJ on Alonso though. I'm not sure how well he is going to age.

You think it's the whole "face of the franchise" thing? Kind of like David Wright was?

don't personally believe the Mets will trade Alonso.

Yes. I do believe it's part of the Alonso valuation including recent comments from Cohen.

Agreed with this. And re the other comment of the Mets needing frontline pitching, yes they do. They aren't getting it for a deadline acquistion of Alonso, however.
it makes zero sense.
the Mets are not a player away (or three players away).
Just from the past year he seems like he can be a Pudge Rodriguez type.
this core group has had 3 years of letdowns. if they dont show that they can play winning baseball here I think 1 or more may be the guys cohen eats money to move this summer if the right deals are out there. nimmo and lindor are under contract a long time so that may not be logistically feasible and you would think they fit what stearns wants but who knows. if things are bad enough he may want to start as fresh as possible.
If it's going to be a transition year, then they probably shouldve be giving more playing time to guys like Scott and Vientos rather than washed up dudes like Stewart and Wendle IMO. Seems like this would've been a perfect opportunity to give Vientos some regular DH ABs before JDM was ready.
Rosa,
De Oleo
Chirinos
Rivera

when pitchers come up is less urgent than position players. last year was his max innings thrown at 87. before that his max was 58. i would guess he's capped below 150 innings this year. there will be injuries or non-performers so he will have a spot whenever he's ready and there will probably be more than enough time left in the season to max out however many innings he has at big league level.
I worked with a guy like that (a Brit named Kev). You remind me of him. Minutiae was his thing. He was the most helpful guy on our teaching staff IMO because of it.
Fans aren’t coming to ballpark or buying Alonso jerseys if the Mets are a below average team next couple seasons. Cohen needs to let Stearns run this ship ruthlessly.
The real issue would be the return. Even in a lost year, season ticket holders and attendance does matter. Someone needs to offer something that significantly better than a comp pick.

It's all we've got to look forward to. I can't believe we've got to watch one of Zack Short, Joey Wendle, or Tyrone Taylor in the srting lineup for the foreseeable future.
Christian Scott, RHP, Mets
So early but a college SP would also make sense. I'm always best talent no matter where though while fully understanding budget and stuff.
have released 5 DSL players OF's Jostyn Almonte, OF Jonathan Perez, SS Leyderman Ruiz, RHP Jhon Nunez and LHP Roberto Rodriguez #Mets
Rookie-level Florida Complex League | Age 17

Not to mention, I would think that Pete would appreciate the opportunity to finish the season on a contender. This isn’t the craziest idea.
he was a traditionally slow starter pretty much his entire time as a prospect until last year - where he started pretty strong at AAA, but like this year probably because he was repeating a level he had already advanced beyond after having a strong springs (ops'd around 800 then went to AAA and ops'd 1.000+).
everything stearns said about both he and baty was correct in the offseason - he and vientos have advanced beyond AAA so anything other than time against MLB pitching is basically wasted time. it wont be seamless and they will go through struggles, but if this year is about developing when 2/3 of the lineup isnt hitting what is there to lose?
have released RHP Gaspar Gomez. Gomez signed July 2023 and pitched 4.1 innings allowing 10 hit 9 runs 3 walks while striking out 3

Ramirez is definitely loading his hands out and higher and bringing them set earlier to a fire position. Wrists are perhaps quick enough to handle the still deep hand load. Mechanical teak that I begged for three years now has finally arrived. He's interesting again.

McLean is only expected to DH "occasionally". Stating the obvious but hard to both focus on trying to become a SPer and work on hitting at the same time.

is sulser as out of left field as it seems? of all the names in spring dont remember him being in the mix for a big league spot.
interesting how they gave ramirez and tonkin each a few chances early on and then made quick decisions to cut bait. i like that it seems decisive. carrying guys you are afraid to pitch is a great way to overuse the guys you dont want to overuse.

I wonder if Sulser might have an opt out? Not saying that's been reported anywhere but he only pitched 1 inning (not good) and he got the call.
Completely guessing but a mild hamstring strain is probably not something they are going to rush him back from and have it happen again. I doubt we see him before 3-4 weeks from now (best case).

(ME)

JDM is 36 with known back issues. how about we wait until he shows he can do what he did last year before roster building around him? how is his possible eventual return to health now an immovable object after leaking for 5 months you werent interested in paying unless the price got too good to pass up?
2-3 weeks ago most had 0 expectations of baty off another mediocre spring. the mets benched him in game 2 for zack short. he has probably been the best met (obviously SSS but he's tied with Nimmo for .4 fwar and we know he has in fact helped them win close games and shown visible improvement in the field).
the only thing certain is you miss 100% of the shots you don't take.
not sure if there's some other way to creatively manage his innings (call him up for BP midseason maybe?) but hard to see any scenario where he stays healthy and is still pitching by the end of the year.
i would guess he has 0 chance. i would guess his innings limit is somewhere south of 130, which would be almost a 150% increase from last year.
(less the innings he's already pitched)
there are 24 weeks left so we are looking at him maybe having 5 innings per week rest of season before playoffs.
if they go 6 man and skip him a few times maybe you can just squeak him to the end of the season.

Seems like his profile was similar to Scott's including pitching some relief in college. Wouldn't surprise if he follows same path or close to it.
Morris was more of a starter than Scott was in college. The issue with Morris is that playing for Nevada is very difficult to evaluate pitchers due to thin air and lots of bandbox stadiums in that conference. In Cape Cod League he was doing well limiting hard contact, but the K/9 was less than ideal.
Scott's stuff improved as he's been going through the system. Very possible we see the same with Morris.
Quote:
pure still is a tier below Scott/McLean.
"• Kade Morris was the Mets’ 2023 third-round pick out of Nevada-Reno, a righty with a low three-quarters arm slot and a 55 slider who pitched competitively in a high-altitude environment in college, probably a reliever but with a real shot to make it as a back-end starter."
He also oddly didn't have Ziegler, Stuart or McLean making it.
if i were them im just signing like 5 bassitts/manaea/colon/quintana types. get me to the 5th/6th inning with 3 or 4 runs allowed and let an elite BP take over.
eric cressey posted a stat in the last few days re pitching injuries that at the youth level the chances of injury over 100 innings pitched go up by like 3-4x (also that major arm recontrsuctkions are way up at the youth level). id imagine that's lessened but similar in the big leagues, just judging by how many fewer major arm injuries seem to occur for elite relievers who end up more in the 50-70 inning range.
scott is in a way a bit of a developmental question - if you knew he is plus pitcher in either role, would you 2x his injury risk in a role over 100 innings? or keep him below 100 innings but with half as much injury risk?

It might have been BA but I read something that Mets thought they could specifically improve his 4 seam and slider which is what they did with Scott I believe. Obviously it wasn't a direct comp but just reminded me of some similar things we've known that Scott developed. Doesn't mean it will go down the same way.
ability to develop hitters. The raw pop is there but he often over swings to get there. Should be interesting to see how he develops)

Back to Morris BA has him at 20 so same thing.
All the "older" players at AAA and AA have started off a bit slow I believe. The Rotted, Rudicks, Mcilwains, etc.
Looking forward to that
Over 4 starts in AA he's thrown 23 innings allowing *5* (yes, 5) hits, 0 runs while walking 6 and striking out 25. Fully realize this is probably jinxing his start tonight but even dating back to 7/1/2023 (13 starts)
61.2 innings pitched 43 hits 17 er 24 walks 82 k's 2.48 era
Fantastic news on Hamel after that last start
1.119 OPS and 2 HR in 22 spring training ABs. Almost 33. I would assume cash considerations

Maybe somewhere in between? Seems like he has better stuff than Vasil. He was so bad last year though that I didn't think much of him. I don't know if they got him in the new lab and were able to unlock some stuff.
Just saw video of McLean's HR. Man he crushed it.

Thomas 0-5
Parada 1-4, 2 k's (Great to see Parada off to a hot start with the bat (.951 OPS), defnse remains a major concern (1/9 throwing on the season, 2 PB's over 5 games)

he had 4 hard hit balls yesterday and one traveled 375 feet so was prob a near homer somewhere so i think the ev is still there even if his slg is down a bit. that will pop up with 1 good game. .265/.379/.490 will obviously play and id imagine a hot streak will push it higher at some point.

not that any of this means much of anything in any direction in an 8 game sample, but it's a week and a half of games in which his groundball and swinging strike rates have both skyrocketed, essentially he has hit three more groundball singles than expected"
I'm not hating on the kid but a .500 BABIP and 29.4% k rate need to be included in any conversation regarding his hot start.
Some nice pitching so far: Ziegler 6 innings, no hits, 13 Ks

The announce team said it appeared he was having issues with his command and they didn't want to push it this early in the season. It certainly was kind of odd. 2 innings 43 pitches is high but not exceedingly so. No injury announced but it's of course possible he was under the weather or something (minor) physically. When it comes to stuff like that we really get much. I mean Justin Jarvis just came off the IL, no word even what happened.

Driveline Stuff+ of 91.
im a numbers guy but beyond the simple to understand stuff (like stuff+) i find the real technical stuff overwhelming to understand practically.

Quote:
this early in the season but very roughly I'd have Christian Scott in a tier of his own with nobody else on his level Sproat probably #2 (even with the RP risk).

I had him #21 in my top 40 pitching prospects, which I think would lineup to about a t100 guy https://lancebroz.substack.com/p/top-40-pitch

Pipeline had at *least* 28 SP's ahead of him based on their top 100. To have nearly 30 (or more) SP prospects ahead of him is pretty wild to me. Considering his upper minors success, frame, stuff... underrated (and I'm not saying that because I'm a Mets fan).

Was Leathersich before or after Akeel Morris? That guy had video game numbers. I remember one SSS in A or A+ ball he averaged almost 15 SO/9.

They have some DSL kids to monitor, but too early to get too excited.

it's funny - we went in the year hyped about jett/acuna/gilbert and now it's non-stop pitching excitement. that's not a negative commentary on the first 3 either, it's a positive commentary on the system.
Have to say Mendoza is beginning to grow on me. Actually answers questions, which is refreshing after last year. Admitted to being surprised that Pirates pulled Jones, didn't hide his happiness (as long as no injury, he made a point of saying). Little thing but rare/noteworthy.
Dan any idea on Wilkin Ramos stuff? Would be nice to get some more pen arms on the radar. 23 so maybe a tad old for AA but good numbers last year and a good start so far.

Dan any idea on Wilkin Ramos stuff? Would be nice to get some more pen arms on the radar. 23 so maybe a tad old for AA but good numbers last year and a good start so far.
He is, I’ve been unable get more information other than “yes,
It’s a physical issue”

The Mets are "very optimistic" that Brett Baty (tight left hamstring) will avoid the IL. He came in today feeling better than last night. "I think it just scared me," Baty said, in part because he's hurt that hamstring before.
Baty should be back in the lineup within a few days.

Confirmed.
some of you don't think so and some of you have gone so far as to say if the Mets sign him you'd no longer root for the team, but I'm different, and if his stuff is still there could be a sneaky add.

didnt realize they were playing early, what's interesting is both singles were just 80 mph off bat.
so as good as everything looks right now, he isn't even "mashing" like he has in the past yet. what we are seeing is more contact, more walks, fewer strike outs. if this is a new baseline and he gets on one of his power streaks the OPS is going north of 1 maybe even 1.1-1.2.

Wow that's terrible.
So not quite the loaded SP's as the past 2 days but @mets do have Tyler Stuart, 2023 4th round pick Wyatt Hudepohl (stuck out 9 over 4.2 his first start) and Noah Hall (looking to get on track after 2 rough starts) #Mets

Spin more than velocity. The Vanderbilt TrackMan was not calibrated properly (it's more than rumored that they did this on purpose) high picks = more recruits wanting to join your program

Jose Peroza leads the system in wRC+ (176) Mark Vientos #2 (162) followed by Chris Suero (147)
. The 22 year old 2023 6th rd pick has stuck out 18 over 12 innings while posting a 2.92 FIP. Not a ton to be learned about Wenninger in the FSL. I imagine he (along with Morabito) are among the first to head to @BKCyclones
I expect his impressive start to continue once on the Jersey Shore (where I suspect the batters will be Down To Flail at his arsenal).

i would guess they put him in AAA rotation and he/scott are basically fighting to be next guy up when they need a starter.
pretty amazing we are almost 1 month in without senga and with an injury to megill, and the 5th/8th SP on the preseason depth chart are both still pitching well enough to hold their spots.

9. Blade Tidwell, RHP, Mets
Team: Double-A Binghamton (Eastern)
Age: 22

No bueno. Yucky.

They are really going to keep Houser in the rotation and keep wasting Scott's innings in AAA?
If they finish 84-78 and miss the playoffs by two games, remember these games where Houser or Luccchesi get completely shelled.

Certainly doesn't sound imminent. DiComo isn't a newsbreaker but he gets his info directly from the team (good read here)

maybe getting soto paid gets him back on track, but i think it's a real question whether or not boras will ever bounce back from this debacle.
One more day of Short--thank God (no offense to the kid of course).

Nae's assessment of Pete Crow-Armstrong is very fair
PCA is an elite defender, but has some very apparent offensive flaws. In his stint in AAA, he showcased very poor swing decisions with a 6th Percentile O-Swing%. He also lacks power, sitting at league average 90th percentile EV
Thomas Nestico
@TJStats

Out of the lineup tonight, didn't play yesterday and was hit by 2 pitches in one game a few days ago (has played since then) so something is going on.
Vargas is on the IL (again, with most things Mets minor league injuries, we don't get much information, not even clear what part of his body is injured, he's eligible to come off the IL on the 26th so I guess we'll see if we see him back in the lineup this weekend.

A couple NL East examples:
the Marlins called up Eury Perez after 190 innings (at most - some of those minors innings came after his ML debut)
the Braves called up AJ Smith-Shawver after 146 innings.
A couple NL East examples:
the Marlins called up Eury Perez after 190 innings (at most - some of those minors innings came after his ML debut)
the Braves called up AJ Smith-Shawver after 146 innings.

Not confirmed but this kid may have been 4! Years older

Yeah that's not good. I remember seeing some clips of him hitting some long HR's last year (I think in Brooklyn?) He seemed to have some real pop in his bat.
What's Clifford's most likely MLB comp? Are we looking at an Lucas Duda or Adam Dunn type player if he develops well?

Raw power rivals basically every hitter they have in the system outside of *maybe* McLean. His in-game power for whatever the reason hasn’t shown up (yet at least) on a consistent basis.

Shintaro Fujinami threw 29 pitches tonight for Triple-A Syracuse, only 11 went for strikes.
He walked 4 and allowed 6 runs. ERA is now at 18.56 for the season.

Yeah I said upper minors so only meant AAA and AA. Those 2 are bringing up the ranks in High A and Low A for sure.
Not sure it matters or not but Mayer tweeted that Binghamton is being bought by a company that owns other minor league teams. Not sure which ones.
Also Jesus Luzardo with elbow discomfort now for Miami. Yikes.

I was thinking more a city change but I believe they recently extended with Bing in the last few years tying them down.
"In November 2021, the Binghamton Rumble Ponies, the minor league affiliate of the New York Mets, and the city of Binghamton announced a 23-year lease extension for Mirabito Stadium through 2045. The lease includes $3.1 million in public funding for upgrades to the stadium, such as a new drainage system and storage tanks under the parking lot.

There you go good find! So yeah hardly means anything at a level we'll care about haha.
I'm in central Jersey so I got lucky when the Yanks moved their AA fro Trenton to Somerset as it's easier for me to go watch games there.
Marco Vargas activated back to STL!!
Tonkin to Yanks.
Jackson Holliday back down to AAA.

Mets rehab updates:
▪️Kodai Senga (shoulder capsule strain) threw an up-down bullpen yesterday and is scheduled to face hitters for the first time on Monday.
▪️Tylor Megill (shoulder strain) is due to begin a minor league rehab assignment Saturday with two innings at Brooklyn.

I don't wanna see Megill back with the big team again this season unless absolutely necessary. Butto has earned his spot in the rotation. Are they sending Megill back to Syracuse after his rehab assignment in anyone's opinion?

Mets have optioned Josh Walker and selected LHP Danny Young from Syracuse.
did you see the TJ thread on Tong yesterday? it may have been in someones replies bc im having trouble finding but basically said he thinks wong is on track to be a top 100 prospect this year.

If this information is accurate, Jett will miss the majority of 2024.

Yovany Rodriguez has 0 to do with Alvarez extension.
He's a catcher yes, but no. He's 17 and likely 4-5 years away if they are lucky. LAD routinely adds top C's despite having Will Smith and Cartaya. They used their top pick in 2022 on Dalton Rushing.
Orellana back on my radar big time as well.

For those wondering about Mets prospect Jett Williams, who hasn't appeared in a game since April 21: he's dealing with a bit of right wrist soreness. Doesn't seem to be a serious issue.

This is a good development.
Team: Triple-A Syracuse (International)
Age: 24
(ME)

I wonder if he got plunked on the wrist. A lot of little bones in the hand/wrist area....hope nothing's broken in there.

BIG time buzz. One to follow

Serious question, is there some character stuff going on here?
all very weird.
that contract is an albatross.

Get Morabito up. As I said yesterday Orellana back on the radar big time. Another nice outing.
