Scott is a fantastic development story. When the Mets popped him out of Florida in 2021, he had a sound delivery and an excellent pitching body, but his stuff needed refinement. This spring, scouts have reported a tighter, more powerful slider to go with a much-improved changeup as well. Scott’s fastball has added velocity as well, giving him a chance at a potent three-pitch mix that he can use to pound the zone and get whiffs. He’s knocking on the door of the big leagues and could wind up as a nice rotation piece in short order.
Brandon Sproat, RHP, Mets
The Mets have long been admirers of Sproat’s stuff, having drafted the Florida product twice. Multiple scouts who saw the righthander in the Spring Breakout game came away impressed. Sproat combines excellent pure stuff, including a mid-90s fastball, a nasty changeup and a 60-grade slider, into a strong, athletic body that should allow him to hold up against the rigors of a full starter’s workload. He’s also worked to tweak the mechanics in his lower half in order to achieve a more consistent movement profile on his fastball.
The Orioles farm is ridiculous. 29 runs in Norfolk last night. Holliday, Kjerstad, Mayo, Norby, Stowers, Basallo to go along with Adley, Gunnar, Cowser, Westburg, and the lone pitcher Grayson.
Rodriguez joined the Mets last August in the trade that sent Tommy Pham to the Diamondbacks. He performed in the Dominican Summer League, hitting .293/.411/.467 in 51 games, and then was appointed to the Mets’ Spring Breakout roster—he delivered an RBI hit—at the tender age of 17. Rodriguez has a sweet lefthanded swing and exemplary feel for the strike zone at a young age. He should hit the ball harder more consistently as he matures. Rodriguez is primarily a shortstop but many scouts project him to second base.
RHP Brandon Sproat, Mets
High-A Brooklyn | Age 23
The Mets drafted Sproat in the second round last year out of Florida, where he was one of the hardest-throwing starting pitchers in the nation. He didn’t pitch after signing but made a huge impression at the Mets’ Spring Breakout game by generating multiple whiffs on his high-90s fastball and high-80s slider as he retired three Nationals batters on seven pitches. Sproat has the type of raw stuff and athleticism to start. It will come down to control and how well he adapts his Gators repertoire to more of a professional one, a la former Florida reliever and current Mets top pitching prospect Christian Scott.

Damn. Nothing but good news for them. Angelos selling the team makes things even better for them than before.
i get what they were trying to do but dj stewart (and short, and wendle) arent the guys to do it for. jmo.
i know jdm is on the way but they should have given him the 2 weeks and then decided what to do after that. baty obviously isnt getting displaced if he continues playing good defense.

I really want to believe it wasn’t because they were afraid Vientos hitting well would have made it a tough decision… that would be very shortsighted.

at this point i believe the smoke around vientos that sometimes he must rub the decision makers the wrong way. his interview after JDM got signed he was visibly shaken. BVW made public comments over the years supporting him when the organization wasnt giving him shots. i have no trouble buying some of what shecky hinted at that he acted too comfortable or didnt have a good poker face after the JDM signing.
so I think they probably didnt want to reward sulking, and probably also came up with some rationale that there wasnt a role for him, but i also think they were wrong because they made themselves look like total hypocrites after preaching patience/development all offseason.
Doesn't Vientos have a history of being a slow starter?

Good for them. I have a number of O's fan friends and they have had crappy teams for 20 years.
be uniquely situated to trade Alonso at the deadline and then try and sign him back. It's highly unlikely Alonso extends with whatever team "rents" him given his agent and I'd find it highly unlikely that he'd rule out the Mets from bidding on him just because they traded him to a contender in a year when the team was bad. Alonso might even be appreciative of such a trade since it would take the qualifying offer out of the mix and probably help him a bit in FA.
The real issue would be the return. Even in a lost year, season ticket holders and attendance does matter. Someone needs to offer something that significantly better than a comp pick.
Not to mention, I would think that Pete would appreciate the opportunity to finish the season on a contender. This isn’t the craziest idea.
RE: Doesn't Vientos have a history of being a slow starter?
Regardless, he should have started the season as the team's DH before JDM was ready. No reason for Zack Short to start the season here.
he was a traditionally slow starter pretty much his entire time as a prospect until last year - where he started pretty strong at AAA, but like this year probably because he was repeating a level he had already advanced beyond after having a strong springs (ops'd around 800 then went to AAA and ops'd 1.000+).
everything stearns said about both he and baty was correct in the offseason - he and vientos have advanced beyond AAA so anything other than time against MLB pitching is basically wasted time. it wont be seamless and they will go through struggles, but if this year is about developing when 2/3 of the lineup isnt hitting what is there to lose?

So early but a college SP would also make sense. I'm always best talent no matter where though while fully understanding budget and stuff.

wonder if they knew what was up and eppler was new so he was just trying to hit some big names?
This was Gutierrez, Baptist and Larez. The latter 2 suspended, the first former with a terrible debut and will repeat the DSL
