Mara quote which I think has flown under the radar

Sean : 4/2/2024 8:27 pm
This is from Duggan's column last week:
Quote:
Ownership has shown more patience with general managers. Jerry Reese outlasted Coughlin by two years, and Dave Gettleman got four years as GM despite producing no success.

Schoen and Daboll came to the Giants after working together for four years in Buffalo. Their synergy has been heralded as an asset. But their futures might not be linked.

“I certainly don’t see them as a package deal,” Mara said. “They did come in together obviously and did work together, but they both have different jobs, different responsibilities and could have different levels of success.”

This tells me that Schoen is running the show and will be driving the decision in the draft. A BBI asshat in the Marc Ross thread reinforced this as well.

If there is a a rift between Schoen (QB) and Daboll (WR), I'd have to expect Schoen would have more pull in that situation.

I don't get this idea that Dabs is pushing for a WR. Wouldn't a QB give him more time?

I hope Joe listens.

Schoen has a longer leash here.

There's ZERO takeaway from this quote. "They both have different jobs...." Well, yeah. And why would anyone think if Dabs got fired that Joe would get fired???

Every bit of logic agrees that getting a QB in the door that the Franchise is in agreement with 're-sets' the clock.

A WR doesn't. Another bad year with more coaching staff issues could very possibly mean he's out.

Because he has had 3 offseasons and the roster still sucks balls. It's a big year for both.

JS is the weak link.He did not do well with the 5 and 7 pick in 2022. 2023 he traded up to get Banks when he could have had either Banks or Porter Jr without giving up a pick. Overall his drafts and free agent signings have not been great. If he sinks the ship and Daboll goes too.

While I agree the roster is tepid at best:

First, the third offseason has not ended, so you are wrong there.
Second, it will take 2 more(in addition to this one) to build a roster worth talking about.

I do not think it is a big season at all for either, unless Daboll absolutely melts down like Judge. They have 10 years of ineptitude to overcome.
Schoen is front office. Mara is front office.

They work together to choose the personnel. The coaches, Daboll included, are supposed to make them look good by putting up W's with what they are given.

When Pat Shurmur was fired, Mara was asked at the PC if the W-L record should have been better, given what Shurmur had to work with.

His answer was "Frankly, yes." It will be the same thing when Daboll is sent packing.

This team is actually five players away from being competitive... (3) OL, (1) top WR and (1) QB

The defense was good enough to get this team to the playoffs.

Meanwhile, Mara's answer is what he SHOULD say. He still has the option to fire both guys.

I agree with you, Giants still have plenty of needs…but 5 players away? Think of it this way - if the guy under center is named Mahomes or Allen or Jackson or Burrow - are the Giants competitive? Hell, we were ‘competitive’ with DJ when he was healthy. The right QB is the holy grail of team building; sure, we need better OL and a stud WR and more….but get a dynamic QB and we will be competitive. No QB out of this draft and it’s a lost season in my view.
This is the way it should be. You could
mfjmfj : 4/3/2024 8:09 am : link
have one do a good job and the other a poor job. Having said that, if Schoen drafts a QB Dabs doesn't want he should be fired. By the same token, if he signed DJ without the enthusiastic support of Dabs he should be fired.
It should always be the GM
pjcas18 : 4/3/2024 8:20 am : link
"running the show and driving the decision" otherwise why have a GM? When you have a coach doing it is when you have a Belichick (coach/GM) or Holmgren (SEA?). If the players wind up being bad decisions it's the GM who gets fired (or should be). If the players individually do well or demonstrate their expected ability, but the team does not then the coach isn't doing his job (not this simple, but you get the point)

The two (Coach and GM) should collaborate obviously and the GM's job is to get the best players and the coaches job is to get the most out of them (collectively).

The two should only be linked insofar as their performances are the same. good or bad.

If he gets fired it is because the roster sucks. Nobody is getting fired now so if he is it means the roster still sucks.
Another way to look at it is in 3 offseasons
robbieballs2003 : 4/3/2024 8:29 am : link
Schoen has added, what? Burns, Okereke, Banks, Thibs, Wan'Dale, JMS, etc. Yes, he has this draft too but that isn't getting it done. He needs to do way better. Hopefully the reinforcements he brought in work out but he has been far less than impressive.

Hyatt too. Most teams don't get 3 starters per draft, which Schoen did in 2023

Where did this stuff of a rift between JS and BD come from. Also, I'm sure BD has a lot of input to player selections.
