NFT: Yanks at Sneks (DBacks) Game 2: Nestor v. Gallen

Mike from SI : 4/2/2024 9:22 pm
Gallen is a good pitcher, so this will not be easy. We're going with the alternating R-L lineup, with Trevino:

1. Gleyber 2b
2. Soto RF
3. Judge CF
4. Rizzo 1B
5. Stanton DH
6. Verdugo LF
7. Volpe SS
8. Cabrera 3B
9. Trevino C

Would love to see a good Nestor game.

I've been watching a lot of other games and they are just putrid across the board.
Coming out of this 6-1 without playing great
Mike from SI : 4/3/2024 6:56 pm : link
is just huge. (Other than the bullpen, which has been pretty damn good, and without Kahnle.)
A grinding week
section125 : 4/3/2024 7:04 pm : link
and to come out 6-1 is a great way to start the season. I know it is the day after a long flight, but a good day to get some rest tomorrow.

Judge finally starting to connect.
Soto is finally coming home!
Dave in Hoboken : 4/3/2024 7:11 pm : link
Can't wait for that moment. He deserves to feel some Yankee Stadium love.

:)
missed the game, just watched the highlights -

interesting that the last man up for the snakes was their pitcher - in a key situation obviously - how did that come about? (Glad that it did!)

They had put their DH in the field and were out of bench guys to pinch hit. Boone knew it an even though there was first and second and only up a run he walked the guy in front of him to load the bases to send up a pitcher that had never had an AB in the majors.
^^^^
Del Shofner : 4/4/2024 8:19 am : link
thanks
It's been a while since the Yankees
arniefez : 4/4/2024 12:15 pm : link
have played a week of baseball that I have enjoyed more. More contact, more lineup R/L balance, more diversified skill sets from 1-9 and more offensive contributors from 1-9. I think the pitching was as good as we can hope for.

I'm sorry DJL is hurt and I know Caberra is probably a replacement player in the long run but it was really refreshing to see him score so easily from 1st base.

Tiny sample size but a lot of fun to watch. They had some luck in AZ too which never hurts.

I would not complain if the Yankees plan with Gil is that (if) when Cole gets back to try and try him into a 2024 version of Mariano in 1996 or Phil Hughes 2009. Just let him pitch a few high leverage innings each week and if they make the playoffs then they have him as a weapon. Although Hughes wasn't very good in the playoffs just the regular season. But you get the idea.
That was a nice road trip
Carson53 : 4/4/2024 1:49 pm : link
I would have been happy with a 4-3 trip before the games started. Even at 6-1, they can tighten up defensively in the infield. Cabrera has had a couple of misplays, Volpe with a bad error yesterday in the 10th, allowed that game to continue. The kid is getting on base, hope that continues. Good to see Judge and even Verdugo get off the schneid. Verdugo milked that around the bases. The guy is a character, but most of the time in a good way. Lets win the home opener. Heck, it's snowing here today.
Not gonna get my hopes up, but interesting timing
bceagle05 : 4/4/2024 9:27 pm : link
for this Heyman story in the Post. He’s a Boras mouthpiece who’s suddenly reporting that Soto and the Padres had positive talks about an extension prior to the owner’s death. And it just so happens to come out on the eve of the home opener, when Yankee fans will have their first chance to welcome Soto in style. Perhaps an extension isn’t so impossible and Boras is applying a little public pressure? We can dream.

Quote:
New Yankees superstar Juan Soto is one big reason why they’re off to a great start. But it can be told now: At one point last summer, there was a solid chance Soto might stay long term in San Diego.

Beloved Padres owner Peter Seidler reached out in summer to start negotiating a potential megadeal, Soto’s agent Scott Boras said. And before Seidler’s health took a turn for the worse, those secret talks began very positively.

Sadly, the win-at-all-costs Seidler died Nov. 14 at age 63, his World Series dream unfulfilled.

There’s a narrative that Soto’s time in San Diego was a disappointment — and the Padres did badly underperform in 2023 at 82-80 — but Seidler obviously wasn’t pinning the ’23 team failure on his star slugger.

“The owner loved Juan Soto. He was sixth in MVP, a Silver Slugger, an All-Star,” Boras told The Post. “Peter called about wanting to pursue him, and there were discussions about wanting to keep him. And unfortunately, it did not work out because of his health.”

Makes sense, Soto already had a relationship with the team and owner.
Re Soto extension:
Mike from SI : 4/4/2024 11:33 pm : link
Even if Soto is dead set on staying with the Yankees, it still makes complete sense to go to FA and pretend he's interested in other teams (like Judge did). I don't begrudge any player doing that. I read an interview with Travis Kelce where he admitted he's underpaid because he's completely unwilling/unable to play the game pretending that he might go somewhere else.

If Soto's willing to forego tens of millions of dollars to sign now? Fuck yeah (for us as Yankees fans).

Boras' MO has always been to send his clients to FA.

However, with the disaster that the last off-season was for him, does he revise his strategy? With Soto, there are only a limited number of teams that will offer $500M plus, and the Yanks are one of them.

Does he recommend that Soto take the bird in the hand and negotiate something in season or does Boras want to fight another day? Hard to tell, but if last off-season was any indication, the owners are tired of his strategy even if they miss out on really good clients.

Hoping this is so. Wringing every last dollar out when they are talking $500 mill(half a billion) is just silly. Does that last $25/$50 mill really matter to a guy like Soto or any player other than ego of who got the biggest contract. I'm not pooh-poohing $50 mill, but when you will be taking in $450-$500 mill(not including the previously made $100 mill already made), why stress yourself and just pick the team you like that is closest to your number...
It's accurate that Boras' MO has always been to send his clients to FA
arniefez : 4/5/2024 10:39 am : link
But Boras clients are coming off a really bad off season.

I have no idea want Juan Soto wants to do. Go for every dollar or play on the biggest stage or both.

I do know one thing. He's been really fun to watch and in the first week of the 2024 season he's made the rest of the team more fun to watch. His energy and his patience at the plate has set a great example so far. I think on the field and off the field he is a perfect compliment to Aaron Judge. I hope the Yankees can sign him long term.
Ultimately, Boras works for Soto, not the other way around
Greg from LI : 4/5/2024 10:48 am : link
If Soto wants an extension, he'll do that. I think it's possible. He looks happy as hell already to be a Yankee, and he hasn't even played a home game yet.
