The Texans rebuild from 2022 to now

Sean : 4/3/2024 12:08 pm
Texans in 2022: 3-13-1. This included a QB room of Kyle Allen, Jeff Driskel and Davis Mills.

Texans in 2023: Draft CJ Stroud and win a playoff game.

Texans in 2024: All in for a Super Bowl.

The Texans had a lot of draft capital, but they were BAD in 2022. Fans thought they were many years away.

I'll continue to say this. Competent builds in the NFL should take no longer than two full off seasons. Hit on QB (easier said than done) and a franchise can turn around very fast.

Schoen should be approaching this draft to land the QB and have the roster ready to compete seriously in 2025. We've just watched the Texans do it.
I know this is really unanswerable

as fact, but in your opinion where would they be if CAR took Stroud #1 and they took Bryce Young?

even with Will Anderson, Tank Dell, etc, etc. where do you think they would be without Stroud?
It's all about the QB
ZogZerg : 4/3/2024 12:10 pm : link
You hit on the QB and the team looks a lot better.

That's why I said it's easier said than done. If you can hit the QB, it accelerates everything.
Texans hit on their QB

And top 5 pick Pass Rusher Will Anderson

We did not hit with Jones at 6, nor our top 2 top 10 picks in 2022. Kayvon seems like a solid but non elite pass rusher and Neal is a bust.
So if the Giants had traded for Diggs...
Milton : 4/3/2024 12:20 pm : link
...after winning a playoff game in 2022, would they have gone to the Super Bowl in February?
p.s.--What if Diggs sucks? What if Stroud comes back to earth? He wouldn't be the first QB who failed to follow up on a promising rookie year. Remember how RG3 was gonna be the greatest QB since sliced milk after a stellar rookie season? And whatever became of Carson Wentz? Maybe you should wait to see how the Texans do in 2024 before declaring their plan a success.

Yep. Texans hit on their drafts picks and were, I believe, top 3 in salary cap space to start this offseason.

very good D's (Ravens and Jets) they scored 9 offensive points. Lot of work still needed to be done imv.
Didn't it all start trading by Watson

That is why getting the QB right is so important
Rjanyg : 4/3/2024 12:25 pm : link
I think one way or another NYG is drafting a QB this year.

I also think we add WR early.

Believe it or not we are actually moving in the right direction. NYG has added a bunch of OL, the best 5 will play.

We traded for Burns who is going to impact everyone on defense
in a positive way.

We didn't overpay for Barkley or McKinney.

I can see NYG adding a couple of vets to the backend of the defense right after the draft.

QB, WR, DT, CB, TE in the draft and maybe a RB or WR if we keep all our picks.
Don't forget DeMeco Ryans.

I'm not sure yet what we have in Thibodeaux. Keep in mind that Martindale's scheme is not favorable to pass rushers, and IIRC Thibodeaux is the only guy who ever posted double digit sacks under him.
careful anointing HOU - point differential last year was just +24
Eric on Li : 4/3/2024 12:36 pm : link
they lost to bryce young and the lowly panthers. they have made some improvements in the offseason but time and time again we have seen teams regress the year after sneaking up on people and exceeding expectations, especially if they then end up having some bad injury luck the following year.

they also had an easier schedule last year from having been a 4th place team (opponents win% was .474 which was 7th lowest). now they are moving into a 1st place schedule.

Agreed. Stroud had really an unprecedented rookie season and deserves acclaim 100% but I think more people should be taking into account what Demeco Ryans and staff did in Houston last season.
The QB is EVERYTHING!!
Dave on the UWS : 4/3/2024 12:58 pm : link
For example, say the Giants trade up to 3 and pick Maye. AND by season's end he shows he is a Home Run.
Suddenly, the OL looks better, the WR group looks better, and the whole offense functions better and starts putting substantial points on the board.

The offense keeps TOP in their favor, so a more rested defense performs better. They play from ahead more often, and KT and Burns start really impacting games. The issues with run defense are diminished, not magnified.

THIS is how Houston improved so quickly.
Get the QB!! The rest of this draft is relatively unimportant.
Except we can't get to the #2 pick
UberAlias : 4/3/2024 1:09 pm : link
to draft a CJ Stroud talent at QB. JJ McCarthy isn't turning this team around in year 1 like Stroud did, I'm sorry. WE can get our JAG QB at another time without passing on blue chip talent, if that's our goal.
Giants need to find their Stroud.

Until they do, enjoy picking around here every year and getting nowhere.

This is where my head is at as well.

We need a legit QB. We don’t have one.
The AFC will come down to the Chiefs and the Texans, possibly.

The two players you named got hurt. We have to wait to crown Stroud but you’re ok with Daniel Jones (who is noticeably absent from your list of QBs who have come down to earth)?

The Texans hit on their QB, they’re trending upward steeply.
Well, you have to give up right now...

to Nick Caserio. It looks like he nailed the prize in Stroud, but he's also added the following players in the draft since he took over in 2021:

Will Anderson, Tank Dell, Nico Collins, Stingley, To'o To'o, Jalen Pitre, Christian Harris.

Those are some solid adds over three drafts.

He was willing to listen to the Giants opening at the time in 2017. They hired Gettleman
They still have a lot to prove, too.

Stroud was unbelievable last year, but they were a new team. They won't be this year. We'll see.
Point being about the Texans
Dave on the UWS : 4/3/2024 3:26 pm : link
is HOW MUCH things change with a legit QB taking the snaps.
Rather than elevate the people around him, Jones has dragged down the receiver corps and especially, the OL.
Both would perform "Better" with a legit QB.
That's the point about using Houston to make a point.

So, the brand new and entirely different coaching staff from the 2022 season had nothing to do with it? It was all just C.J. Stroud? Wow he must be really jumbo coconuts good.
The texans hit on 3 high Value positions in 1 draft
Rudy5757 : 4/3/2024 4:36 pm : link
QB, DE and WR. They didnt have to trade up for the QB, they were able add some pieces in FA and their OL is much better than what the Giants had in the past. If they had to trade up and missed on the opportunity to get DE Anderson and WR Dell it would be a different story.

The cost to trade up is too great for a team that has a ton of needs and no money after FA. We still have holes at WR, RB, TE, CB, S & DT.

It’s a great question. Do they take Bryce Young if CAR picks Stroud? It’s hard to tell how much the shitshow that was CAR impacted Young’s development, but it had to have some effect.

I think both teams are in the 7-8 win range if you flipped the QB’s.

They key area they began
prdave73 : 4/3/2024 5:56 pm : link
was building the offensive line. They invested a good amount in free agency in order to do so. I believe 3 Olinemen in FA, and some in the draft.
