Heading to SLC this weekend for 14 y/o daughters volleyball tournament. Will be based downtown near convention center. Looking for things that both girls and parents would enjoy during free time. Some parents have mentioned snow tubing--is that still a thing in April? Thanks in advance
Yeah, will be with a group of 14 year old girls so skiing or snowmobiling is out. Looks like there are some tubing places up in Park City, although our Florida crew may lack the needed apparel
A lot of people haven't been aware of it, but my old home mountain, Snowbasin, is a great mountain. Outside Ogden, within an hour of SLC. We had the Downhill and Super G races there in 2002. There's a cool gondola that takes you up to the starting line of the downhill run.
I hear even that can be a challenge in Utah.
If you are looking to get out of downtown then I'd recommend Vessel Kitchen and Publik Kitchen, there is also a very good pastry shop nearby that I can't remember the name of. They are in the middle of a small town area that has coffee houses and shops you can walk around.
The University of Utah is in SLC, there might be college sports going on this weekend.
I would certainly reinforce what others have been saying to head east to the mountains, the drive alone is very scenic. I found the southern mountains, near Deer Valley, to be more scenic than the northern part near Park City. The town Park City is a quintessential ski town, you could spend an afternoon eating and just walking around.
Hill Air Force Base, abt a 50m drive from SLC, and has one of the largest military air force museums in the world.
If you are into drinking then plan, they don't make it easy. Hard liquor for sale is only available at state stores, which there are only a few in SLC, their hours are iffy and there can be long lines. Mixes like tonic are even difficult to find and the choices are very limited. Beers at bars, brewers, or restaurants must be less than 5% ABV, if I remember correctly. Same for beer for sale at grocery stores. You can find higher alcohol content beer at the state stores. I like high ABV IPAs and what limited ones I found were not very good, I eventually gave up looking.

I don't remember ever having trouble getting a drink in 17 years. If there are any restrictions in places there are workarounds. Idk if they still don't allow you to have 2 drinks in front of you at the same time, but that's no big deal. I'm sure that anywhere in SLC there's a State liquor store within 10 minutes. Yeah, a pain in the ass, but I had to deal with that in New England also. Also, a heads up- don't speed in UT on a Sunday, the police are out in full force for church day.
Have a great time. It should be warm and sunny this time of year. They have a great lift system and lodges. The place was a dump when I arrived in '97, but was bought by Earl Holding of Sinclair Oil, who also owned Sun Valley. He made it nicer than Sun Valley. Lots of long intermediate trail with great grooming, but also steeps off the high-speed quad that goes to the downhill run, as well as tree skiing and expert terrain off the beaten path. If you have time, a great place to go for lunch or casual dinner is The Shooting Star Saloon, the oldest saloon in Utah. It's got a stuffed St. Bernard head on the wall that's so large they had to use a bear mold. Small menu and the house special is the Star Burger, burger and hot dog together. It's nearby in Huntsville. If not there, go back to SLC for dinner, nothing good in the area.
Also, if you have never had In n Out burger you can find them in SLC.
I have 2 more weeks...forecast snow friday-sunday!

I skied at Stratton in VT for about 15 years, went to every place in the NE almost, and a bunch of places in the Mountain West. Between snow quality and weather, Utah is just incredible

I was out there with friends on vacation in March '94 or '95. They had to leave a day or two before us. At the time, I was really into skiing and golf. So we drove them from Park City to the airport in SLC for them to go home. That was after a morning of skiing. And driving to the airport I see the mountains in my rear view mirror, and out the front window there are people playing golf in shorts in SLC. I said I've gotta move here.
Bummer. It's nice to eat outdoors at Ruth's. Hopefully valley rain will be mountain snow.

Lol. Yep, will be indoors most of the weekend but we get into SLC before noon tomorrow and tournament doesn't start till Saturday so was hoping for nice day tomorrow. Looks like we are a week too early--forecast for next weekend is sunny and temps in the 70s

Keep in mind, for you and especially for the athletes, you'll be about 4,000 ft above sea level and breathing could be a little labored at first. Good luck to the kids
