Undiscussed topic: 11 new coaches on the staff, 3 promotions

Eric from BBI : Admin : 4/4/2024 4:27 pm
First of all, old faces with new titles:

- Mike Kafka - now assistant head coach and OC
- Shea Tierney - now offensive passing game coordinator and QB coach
- Jerome Henderson - now defensive passing game coordinator and DB coach

New faces:

- RB Coach Joel Thomas - spent last nine years with Saints (4th Giants RB coach in 4 years)

- TE Coach Tim Kelly - former Texans and Titans OC. Spent a lot of time with Texans in various roles.

- OL Coach Carmen Bricillo - Patriot and Raiders background

- Assistant OL Coach James Ferentz - retired NFL OC/OG and son of legendary Iowa HC Kick Ferentz. First coaching job.

- DC Shane Bowen - Just 37 years old. Most of his experience is with Titans (2016-2023). Served officially as DC last three years there (though he unofficially was DC in 2020 too).

- OLB Coach Charlie Bullen - Another young guy who spent a lot of time with Dolphins and Cardinals.

- Defensive Assistant Zak Kuhr - another ex-Titans coach, experience coaching inside linebackers

- Special Teams Coordinator Michael Ghobrial - Just 36 years old. Was ST coordinator with Hawaii and Washington State before serving as assistant with Jets.

- Assistant Special Teams Coach Cameron Achord - Last six years with Patriots, including four as special teams coordinator after Joe Judge was hired by Giants.

- Executive Director of Player Performance Aaron Wellman - Returns to Giants after four years at Indiana.

- Director of Strength and Conditioning Frank Piraino - Spent last five years with - you guessed it - the Titans.

Would love to hear from Bowen before 2235.

Giants don't want to risk super secret new defensive plan leaking out! :-)

way for Vrabel.....

One of the beats asked Schoen about all the former Tenn. people in the building now not long ago. He said something like he has respected the physical style Tenn. has played with. Interesting comment imv.

I always felt that Derrick Henry set the physical tone for their games. He didn’t invent ‘beast mode’ but he personified it. It sure would be nice to find a big bruising RB in the later rounds.
Houston we have a problem......

not a promising foreshadow, don't forget they had to beg Kafka to stay. I hope Daball is leaning from 2023.
That’s a huge amount of new faces on the coaching staff.

It’s going to be interesting to see the players respond especially on defense. I’m excited to see what strategies Bowen brings in, but you have to wonder how long it takes the players to understand the new defense.

I'm not optimistic that it will be a short learning curve.

This is going to be a very different defense. Wink and Bowen had opposite type schemes.

Defensive schemes are easily installed if you have the right personnel to fit.
Wink and Bowen did not have opposite schemes

both immediately inherited their prior defensive coordinator roles from Dean Pees after spending multiple seasons under him, running that same defense, as LB coaches.

each obviously have different personalities (possibly opposite) and different ways of running the defense/calling plays - Wink was super aggressive with blitzing and played more man. Bowen has been more balanced.

but in terms of scheme their backgrounds are as similar as a new coach from another staff can get. and the personnel Bowen is inheriting fits very closely with what he had in TEN. Lawrence, Burns, Thibodeaux are basically his new Simmons, Landry, Autry. see thread linked below.

the only big ? with bowen is how much was he aided by vrabel/schwartz vs. running his own defense?

started the season very good in 2022 with a new scheme. Through 7 games or so they were allowing less than 20 pts/game. Offense was very good at running the ball/TOP and scoring enough points.

I think one of the issues between Dabs/Wink had to do with the offense struggling to possess the ball. Lot of three and outs. All the sacks didn't help field position either.
