LSU WR Malik Nabers is known as a “high maintenance”

Mr. Nickels : 4/7/2024 2:37 pm
prospect who could struggle in a big city, per
@TonyPauline

“There are off-the-field questions Nabers has had to answer to during the draft process, and teams must feel comfortable with those answers if they’re going to invest an early draft pick and millions of dollars in his services.”

Which WRs aren’t divas? Haha. I know there are receivers like Mike Evans who are low maintenance, but man does that position attract some characters.

but there was a whole lot of nothing in that tweet. Going to need specifics.
According to GoDeep13,

It sounds like Nabers is the pick if they can't get a QB they like. I would prefer Odunze, but Daboll could definitely have a lot of flexibility scheming up a Z like Nabers to attack from all over the field.

Tony Pauline is or close to the worst.
Odunze comes across as a non-diva

I can see the other 2...being more high maintenance

MHJr is by all accounts is a great person and a great teammate. Everyone at OSU lauds his maturity and personal accountability.

Implying MHJr has some sort of high maintenance issue is really strange.

Oh and his vert is 4 inches greater.

For comparison's sake, Malik Nabers had the same 40 and vert as Odell Beckham's combone score, in high school.
I've Read Elsewhere There Are Some Character Concerns
BlueVinnie : 4/7/2024 3:09 pm : link
If true, he could be the next very good but pain in the ass WR.

I also saw somewhere (not sure if it was on this board or not) where when asked about playing for the Giants he said something along the lines of, he's good with it but they have to get the QB situation resolved. That sent up red flags for me. If they draft Nabers it's very unlikely they get a QB this year. This means that Nabers would be playing with one of the worst QB situations in the league for at least 2 seasons. I could see him then trying to force his way out of NY due to the subpar QB play if that turns out to be the case.

christian : 4/7/2024 3:11 pm : link
Nabers also casually mentioned he'd only trained for his pro day for 3 weeks because he had a toe injury.
My Very Non-Expert Take On The Top 3 WRs
Trainmaster : 4/7/2024 3:17 pm : link
in alphabetical order:

Harrison - high floor, high ceiling
Nabers - lowest floor, highest ceiling
Odunze - highest floor, lowest ceiling

The lowest floor on Nabers (IF true), scares me a little. Henry Ruggs type of incident would suck.

IF no trades (unlikely):

1 - Chi QB1 (Williams or outside shot Daniels)
2 - Wash QB2 (Daniels or outside shot Williams)
3 - NE QB3 (Maye or maybe McCarthy)
4 - Ariz WR1 (MHJ or Nabers)
5 - LAC WR2 (Nabers or MHJ)
6 - NYG QB4 or WR3 (McCarthy or Maye; or Odunze)

Nabers

Odunze = Larry Fitz
Nabers = Beckham

Who do you want?

I prefer Fitzgerald.
Tony Pauline doesn’t have sources

Other than the gun issue, there’s nothing to see here.

Not saying he’s going to be a perfect angel, but there’s nothing from LSU that says high maintenance. I work with a couple of his teammates, they don’t have a bad thing to say.
theres 4 good QBS and 3 great WRS.

BANG!

Johnny Mara at the NFL Annual Meeting on March 30th in Orlando...

"I let the GM and HC build the roster. We have operated the same way for many years here. If they have a conviction about a player, I'm not going to get involved. I'll question them about it, make them defend their position, but the only time I'm going to get involved and exert any influence is if I think it's a conduct issue off the field."

Something inside my head keeps nagging me about Nabers and the #6 pick. After Joka, and much earlier, OBJ, I think the brass would like to avoid drama. And after Neal, I think the brass also wants more of a safe choice/sure thing. That screams Odunze, even if Nabers might have the higher ceiling. As an aside, it's also why I think JJ is a smokescreen. But we'll find out soon enough, I guess!
It should be part of the consideration in drafting WRs.
ThomasG : 4/7/2024 4:27 pm : link
A high maintenance pain-in-the-ass WR (or TE) is the worst. We have had some and they suck the life out of the offense and a QB, and give the coaches migraine headaches. And then a GM has to unwind the whole thing and move him.

Remember?
Every team conducts their own evaluation on a player.
DeVito32 : 4/7/2024 4:30 pm : link
Between talking to coaches where they played from high school to college, meetings at the combine, pro days, in person visits. They aren’t going to take a tweet from a reporter over their own extensive evaluations. After months and months of gathering information on a player, a GM isn’t going to say “a reporter said on twitter he’s high maintenance, let’s throw all our scouting reports out the window and take him off our board.”

christian : 4/7/2024 4:33 pm : link
Describing Pauline as a reporter is a stretch.

I agree and have said the same about Nabers possibly being knocked down on our board with Mara at the helm. I don't see hoe this has anything to do with JJ being a smokescreen though?
The only reason that I think between the two
BJacobs The Tiptoe Bandit : 4/7/2024 4:37 pm : link
it would be Odunze is because he fits the need of the big physical X outside guy which the Giants have not had in forever.

I hate that thinking but when you are a bad team and in trouble the tendency for management is to go with the need over the long term value to preserve their jobs. Then it becomes a cycle.

Toney’s gun incident stemmed from having in the car while going to confront a gang member/bookie and there was possible intent to use it. He always tried to flee from the cops. The two situations aren’t even in the same stratosphere
Nabers already had a gun incident
HardTruth : 4/7/2024 4:47 pm : link
And yes I know the charges were dropped

But the red flags are there.

As well as this Combine comment

Malik Nabers on Giants QB situation: “Going to New York wouldn’t be a bad idea. The QB situation, they’re gonna figure it out, especially if they have a caliber receiver coming like me. They’re gonna wanna get me the ball so I’m sure they’re gonna wanna get a QB that can do that.”

That Harrison’s dad was viewed as mature but was actually a murderer (allegedly but strong allegations) against him? I gave a really hard time divorcing that given his dad never got charged, but it’s also not fair to hold it against the son.

I'm not necessarily friends with Nabers, but I have his number and he has mine. I've worked with him on at least 5 occasions and have met/spent some time with him on 20+ occasions. I don't know where Pauline is getting this info. The dude is probably one of the most lowkey WRs I've ever seen and I've met every big name NFL/CFB WR over the last 25 years. It's almost like Pauline pulled it out of his ass because of where he went to school and he's a similar player to Odell.
