He makes a lot of money for the owners, but it’s often at the expense of the fans. The Saturday draft was great. We used to make a whole day of it. Bunch of beer, food, and hang out and watch the draft all day with shit talking between rival fans, etc.
Now it’s a disjointed mess that’s sole aim is to get as many prime time advertising dollars as possible.
I do like the draft moving around to different locations though.
a) The draft starts two days earlier than it would on a Saturday.
b) You get to fully process and discuss the first round before then spending even more time talking about round two up ahead, which feels like another first round after highlighting all the interesting prospects that may be available when the Giants are on the clock.
c) There are three days of it, not two, and it's never boring. And you a full Sunday to review it all and fully digest all the ramifications, including the happenings across the league.
But now I have a family and can’t veg out in front of the tv like I did back in my military days on a Saturday.
I’m happier the way it is now, for my life now
This is true…I miss having it on Saturday/Sunday, but now I’d likely miss most of it while busy with kid sports and family stuff. At least on Thursday/Friday nights I can claim the TV and some couch time
Rounds 1-3 on Saturday 4-7 on Sunday. I used to fly to Florida to visit my friends for that weekend. We would go out partying Friday night then drink and eat all day Saturday and Sunday watching the draft.
It was a complete saturation of football in an otherwise barren wasteland of offseason. Your team also changed much more dramatically in a day. Adding 3 premium picks (maybe more) to a roster in 6 hours is a huge swing and gives fans a wave of hope. It was fun to watch your team change significantly in real time.
I will allow that I liked the Friday night first round much more than I thought. Seems kinda obvious in retrospect, putting rd 1 in prime time.
But this Thursday night stuff is garbage and nothing but greed. One night of prime time advertising isn't enough, let's slide it back to Thursday and wring every last buck out of it that we can. It makes no sense. But neither does Thursday Night Football.
Stop trying to make Thursday a thing Roger, you greedy fuck.
But I prefer the way it is now. Dig in with a few cold ones on a random Thursday night in prime time. This is the time I’m usually ready to relax and find something on the television anyways. I don’t miss having to commit entire weekends to be indoors and if I had to guess, most of those that say they prefer the old way only think that way because it’s how it always was and I’m guessing most people would watch the 1st round then tune out. The entire weekend thing is overrated and just nostalgic. People hate change. But for me, breaking it up like this is better. To each their own I suppose
The season opens on Thursday. The draft starts on Thursday.
Brutal.
However, these are just more reminders that the NFL owners and their cocksucker COO Goodell view the NFL first and foremost as a television show.
What else are you doing on a Thursday night? You can always record your planned Golden Girls episode. Everyone bitches about Thursday nights like their entire schedules are being ruined. Yet, when we actually have something to entertain us, we are all there intently watching. Why? Because there isn’t shit else to do on a Thursday night. But, but like to bitch about everything and anything
...way works for me.
But I get why you don't like it happening on a Thursday night.
You're probably already passed out drunk by the time the draft starts. hahaha
I remember when we traded up for Eli on that Saturday in 2004. I was tuned in with my friend Abel whom passed away in an avalanche in 2018. Great, lifelong memories.
First 3 rounds, starting at Noon ending at 6pm (I think it was). You made a day of it. Then the next day had the rest of the rounds.
Mel Kiper on TV, and your own draft guides from Ourlads and Buchsbaum. Your Draft Preview issue from Giants Insider (a newspaper).
Chris Berman, coming up with Curtis my favorite Martin, Rick No time to wallow in the Mirer, and Andre Bad Moon Rison. Watching the Jets fans in the balcony get crushed every year. Good times.
Aside from today's rotten format, the actual per-pick coverage -- spread across multiple networks -- really isn't ANY better, despite all the technical advances.
And the fuckers still go to a commercial as soon as the Giants go on the clock. 🖕🖕🖕
It's just oversaturated, overdone, and of course, spectacle. Way too much spectacle.

Ended at 6? Try 11. 1st round alone would stretch out for 5 hours because teams used to get 15 minutes per pick and they used them. Usually ESPN would start the day and ESPN2 (which not everybody had back then) would pick it up sometime in the 2nd rd. Day 2 was pretty much the same as day 3 now. Except, You would only hear the pick announcements in the backround if at all. But yeah I preferred it that way too. If you were still watching the end of the 3rd rd Saturday you were a die Hard.
Marriott Marquis in NYC all day and until maybe 3 am in the night
It results in continuous speculation that is many times just hypothetical and really just silly. Early April would be my preference. I also don’t like that it’s not done on a Sunday. That would let me watch the entire draft.
Just my opinion.
because a Saturday in the spring is prime time to be doing other things outside. I usually do not have conflicts on Thurs/Friday nights.
It may also be better for the teams to break up the flow so they have time to think about their draft strategy as it unfolds, put trades together, etc.
I loved the old format when I was in high school/college. If it were like that today I wouldn't be able to spend the entire weekend in the basement watching. Easier for me to watch now. I didn't even think of that as much as I loved what it used to be when I was younger.

In my mind, it's not even close.

I've been watching the draft since maybe 2010.

Go back further and it was more of a marathon.
Just my opinion.

I like the quicker tempo also. I think it gives teams a better chance to see who is available and not rush into a mistake.
