Mike Nolan

I hadn't really heard much about him after he left the Giants in '96. I know he didn't really flourish as a head coach but I thought he was fairly well respected as a DC. Any idea why his name doesn't seem to come up? Or am I just missing him being mentioned over the years? He's 65 now and the HC for the UFL's Michigan Panthers.

for the Ravens for a few years preceding him coaching the Niners from '05-'08, where he was fired mid season and replaced by Mike Singletary.

He then floated around the league as a DC for some years afterwards.

Probably was a solid defensive mind, just not cut out to be a head coach.

Liked to wear suits on the sideline in honor of his father.
He was the DC for Dallas in 2020

Historically the worst defense in Dallas history.

That was the death knell in his NFL coaching career.

Ravens DC who transitioned the D to what they called a "modified" 3-4. I learned about this when Wink was hired and looked into that D in more detail.

Mike Nolan is one of the most underrated characters in Giants coaching history.

The Giants defense was a total disaster under Rust in 1992. The whole post Parcells staff situation under Handley was a mess. Nolan had been the linebackers coach under Wade Phillips in Denver, and Reeves brought him to New York.

Fans don't remember how f'n great the defense was under Nolan. That 1993 team gave up 12.8 points per game, which is tied for 9th all time in NFL history.

LT's last year, and Strahan and Armstead's rookie years.

Perhaps, but here is a article I found. It credits Nolan with starting the transition but it seems to have been modified over the years by future DC's.

Giants at that time. Nolan’s base defense is a 1-gap that can stop the run and is better against the pass.

Wasn't Parcells and Belichick's defense a two-gap 3-4 defense?
