Best Wide Receiver Draft: 1996 or 2014?

M.S. : 4/14/2024 7:00 am

NFL.com + has a feature, "Greatest WR Class Ever?" which features the 2014 draft. I don't have access to the article, but the sub-title contains the following: "A new era of wide receivers emerged at the 2014 NFL Draft! Odell Beckham Jr., Mike Evans and Davante Adams headlined a WR draft class truly like no other in NFL history."

That got me thinking. Was the 2014 WR draft class truly the best ever, better even than 1996? (Coincidentally, both draft classes had 33 WRs.)

What's your vote: 1996 or 2014?

‘96.
Just looking at

The names in both draft classes. I would say 96 was better. The 96 has hall of famers and a lot of good to great wide receivers.
Probably 1996 for TO, Harrison ...

But I'm very impressed by the career Mike Evans has had. He has far exceeded expectations for me. I think he'll definitely be a HOFer one day.
2014

Not close?

1996 very good to hall of fame wide receivers

Keyshawn Johnson
Terry Glenn
Marvin Harrison
Eric Moulds
Amani Toomer
Mushin Muhammad
Bobby Engram
Terrell Owens
Joe Horn

2014 very good to hall of fame wide receivers

Sammy Watkins
Mike Evans
Odell Beckham Jr
Brandin Cooks
Kelvin Benjamin
Davante Adam's
Jarvis Landry

You can argue one class over another, but to say it's not close? Marvin Harrison and Terrell Owens alone accomplished more than anyone in the 2014 class.
Personally

Not close especially when you're deciding Sammy Watkins has been "very good".

The 1996 class was better full through. Joe Horn is better than most of all the 2014 class. There is also the 1985 class featuring Jerry Rice and Andre Reed, which is also better.

Its even more of a passing league now than in 1996. But you could argue the QBs were better in 1996.

Has probably two of the top 5 WRs of all time.

You’re right. It’s not even close.

Completely disagree
Watkins was never very good.
LauderdaleMatty : 4/14/2024 4:18 pm : link
He might have had a a few very good games but career wise ? OBJ HOF like for about 4 years.

It's 96. And if you think it's 2014 you need to share what you're smoking. Really don't get the comparison seriously
I think 2010 was better than 2014

.
I would throw 1985...
bw in dc : 4/14/2024 4:59 pm : link
in there because you had Rice and Andre Reed. And Eddie Brown and Al Toon were excellent WRs.
And also 1988...
bw in dc : 4/14/2024 5:02 pm : link
had Tom Brown, Michael Irvin and Sterling Sharpe.

It's embarrassing that Sharpe isn't in the HoF. One of the greatest WRs in his generation who had his career cut short by injury.
