Greg Cosell - Top 3 qb prospects

Ira : 4/14/2024 10:10 am
Caleb Williams 'controls the football when he throws it'. His greatest strength is his ability to handle an active pocket. Williams is #1 on his list. Williams makes special plays, but that's not enough to be great.

Daniels and Maye are very different players, so they're hard to compare.

Daniels is a very explosive athlete, but he's a refined passer as well who can work from the pocket. There's a calmness and poise in his game and he will continue to grow. He doesn't have a lot of anticipation throws.

Maye needs to clean up inconsistent ball placement. He's a better athlete than people think.

Would love to somehow come away from this draft with Daniels

But I don’t think there is any real possibility of that. Just so many ways he can beat you. With the right coaching he can be special.

I like him, but he needs to stop taking bad hits when scrambling or he’ll have a short career. Some of that can be fixed with coaching, but some is instinctual and may take time to get away from.

Oddity with PFN’s Mock Draft Simulator: Daniels falls to 6 roughly half the time, maybe a little less. Some combination of Williams, Maye, MHJ, Alt and either Nabers or McCarthy go 1-5. It comes down to a few things: Does Alt go in the top 5? Does a team choose McCarthy over Daniels? Does someone else unexpectedly take a WR or OT ahead of a QB?

If Daniels is there, do the Giants take him? Over Nabers? Over Odunze?

I have no idea what they’d do in that situation. I think the mocks that have them taking an OT at 6 are lazy and dumb, but I can’t read the tea leaves.
HA! If Daniels and the WRs are there at #6

And the Giants take Alt, I am going to actually experience one of those fake reaction videos where the guys destroy their TVs.

BBB did a rundown on his tape and they're mixed on him, too. He had a tendency to continue scrambling rather than keeping his eyes downfield. He also had a large number of scrambles in comparison to other QB's in the nation.

i think he'd be my preference outside of Caleb but it's not going to happen. I think he's a locked in pick at Washington.
Cosell talking common sense...

JJM is not in the same zip code as the top three in terms of elite ceiling. I would put him below Penix and at best comparable with Nix. Under no circumstances should the Giants even contemplate drafting him in the top ten.
My apologies - I meant to put this comment in the other Cosell thread

Me too, but even if DC passes on him, I don’t see the Pats doing the same. That’s why, if NE was to trade the pick, it won’t happen until after DC picks.

Agree, but if DC does not take him, I would be completely fine giving up whatever was necessary to get to #3 if the Pats were open for business. If the Pats take a QB, I am hoping they like McCarthy and let Maye fall to #4.
