I am not a fan of retiring numbers. It’s gotten out of hand. The Mets retiring Hernandez made retiring Doc and Darryl a pretty obvious progression. That said, it will be fun for Doc to get his day. Hopefully his demons are gone for good. He was only 20 in 1985. It was very believable that we were watching the first of many magical seasons. He was Nolan Ryan with complete control.
I am sure he ‘s suffered a lot of “What if?” bouts the last several decades.
Looks like a beautiful day, should be a lot of fun for Met fans and the old crew.
You're a casino supervisor? Keep your trap $hut.
better than peak Pedro who is 2nd.
Gooden's combination of gas and off-speed stuff was legendary. It makes me nostalgic to remember those days and sad and pissed off those teams only won one title.

All that said, retiring numbers is stupid - ring of honor or team hall of fame - stuff like that should be how you honor your all-time franchise greats.

good point about numbers being retired. It's one thing to ut them out of circulation for a while, but quite another to retire them.
Serious note.. Doc deserves to have his number retired. I am surprised it took this long.

He was awesome at his peak, Seaver was better though and for a much longer time IMHO.

That's why I said "who I've seen". I was too young for Seaver's prime, and never saw Koufax or anyone else who had stuff like Doc.
And Gooden definitely didn't have a lengthy prime. 4-5 years tops before injuries and drugs took hold, but my point was about pure stuff.
His 1985 season is still the best stuff/season I have ever seen.
And that's not even counting Pedro (or Nolan if you said most dominant for single games)
I watched that game and remember it lime it was yesterday.
The play should have been ruled an error.
Doc was unbelievable that season!!!

It wasn't Sonny, it was Colagero's father Lorenzo (Robert DeNiro) who said that.

Someone corrects me on that every single time I say, which is probably every thread that mentions Dwight Gooden or Darryl Strawberry. So thank you - it may be you every time. lol.
