The Doctor is In: Dwight Gooden's Spectacular 1984 Rookie Season - ( New Window )
I told him he has to get to a TV to see this kid. His stuff is unbelievable and my dad, a former catcher who once had a tryout at the Polo Grounds, would apprepreciate seeing this
19 year old phenom!
My dad's tryout was December 5, 1941. Well, he served WW2 in North Africa and Europe as a C47 crew chief. Stationed in England and throwing a baseball was not good for his arm and he "threw his arm out" (the terminology of the day) and that ended his pro aspirations.
He did play semi-pro in the post war industrial leagues in North Jersey until his late thirties.
That's my memory of Dwight, my dad and me in 1984.

Great story Gene. Thanks for sharing. Doc was special. That's good that your father at least continued to play. It must have been hard for his dream to end, but at least he kept playing at semi-pro level. Sometimes it's out of our hands. Sounds like you guys had a good relationship.

love that story Gene. crazy to remember the "get to a tv" days when now ill occassionally wake up to texts from my dad w/ highlights from twitter.
butto has 10 whiffs, ragans has 9
butto allowed 2 hard hits, ragans has 3
butto 6 k's, ragans 5
neither has allowed a walk
both faced 10 batters, 5 balls in play
just got a double play in the 4th plus another 2 whiffs for 12 total through 4 innings with 56 pitches. royals xba against butto is .138.
as good as could be hoped for against a good team that came in on a heater. not just getting lucky on defense either, he is preventing hard contact and missing bats.
tyrone taylor's almost sac fly went 264 feet, which probably should have gotten marte home. he's done more than i expected but athletically he's obviously diminished. doesnt explain dropping fly balls either.
hard hit for lindor hopefully they can at least get ragans out of the game here with a hard inning.
now someone score a run.

José Buttó was stellar today, as he registered 9 K in 6.0 IP and allowed just 4 base runners
His 4-Seam lived up in the zone as he kept his secondaries down. A great showing of command to help elevate the effectiveness of his pitches.
Buttó is off to a fantastic start to 2024
took 22 pitches in his last inning and his velocity was fading.
perfect situation set up and first pitch pop up is the most deflating outcome possible.
better to be lucky than good sometimes. mets had a lot of guys on all game.
taking series from cin, atl, kc after the brutal start is impressive.

Carlos Mendoza says that J.D. Martinez will start swinging a bat tomorrow:
-Teheran to the Cubs
-Hope is JDM is back playing minor league games by the middle of this week
Curse the Wilpons for never doing anything for him
I think I'm going to try to go to the Strawberry game 6/1
Butto was out of this world, and that's a good/hot lineup. That changeup was deadly.
sucks bc Lindor was heating up but that pop up hurt my heart.
Diaz needs more work, wonder if Mendoza will follow Bucks lead and play him in high leverage situations very now and then.
I think Polar Bear is back.
I hate to give too much credit to the pitching lab for everything but he junked his curveball for a sweeper so now he has 2 sliders and while his FB remains average, hitters have more trouble with it than you'd think. I think his gains are legitimate. Not saying he's the next DeGrom but he looks like a legitimate MLB SPer.

he was really never viewed him as much coming up. Could be a rotation mainstay going forward. Continuing his great pitching from down the stretch. Would be nice to have a nice surprise like that

Butto is the real deal. He should remain as a member of the Starting 5 for the remainder of the season.

Carlos Mendoza on Brett Baty's success against lefties this season:
"For him to be an everyday player at the big league level, he's going to have to face lefties. And I'm comfortable with it"
