NFT: The Drop (2014) and other "multiple viewing" movies

Found myself home unexpectedly today with an opportunity to watch some television. Loving Fallout on Amazon but cant advance it without the wife so that was out. Decided to give The Drop another watch after recommending it to someone over the weekend. A Tom Hardy fan who somehow hadn't heard of it or Locke, interestingly enough, but it was a school function so we remained polite and no balls were busted. Its definitely a movie that lends itself to repeated viewings, and while I dont have a favorite genre that is my favorite "type" of movie.

Two things caught my eye this time. I had always wondered why Bob told the police about the stickup mans broken watch. It wasn't a simple "slip up". Bob is far to careful and thoughtful to make a mistake like that. But I could never put my finger on it until today. Bob was already suspicious that Marv was fucking around again, and giving the cops that little nugget was a calculated way to put distance between himself and his cousin in the eyes of the Chechens. Given his overall presentation it was likely to be interpreted as a foolish but relatively harmless slip up by a guy they probably think is a little slow. And there's no way he's privy to what Marv is doing if he's trying to help the cops. Slow, but trustworthy. But Bob isnt slow. Bob's playing chess while everyone else, with the exception of Det. Torres, is playing checkers. Torres is onto him though, and it does feel a little open ended in that regard. Such a great character, honestly one of my favorites of the last 10 years.

Also, Ann Dowd showcases her amazing ability to make an impact with minimal screen time. She's in a couple scenes, 3 tops, but she adds so much depth to Gandolfini's Marv. Looked at some reddit threads on the movie today and saw someone compare Marv to an aging Tony Soprano. I suppose its inevitable but my god, what a lazy comparison. They're both greedy but it ends there. Marv is ultimately spineless. Tony is calculating and he doesn't blink. Marv allowed the Chechens to muscle him out, he stayed on at "his" bar, and stewed in it ineffectually for a decade. And nothing shows that more plainly than his scenes with Dowd. Ultimately it led him to make a series of very stupid decisions that appear calculated but we know, thanks to Dowd, is actually desperation. And it gets him killed.

What a great movie. Did anyone read the book? Curious how it compares?

What are your favorite multiple viewing movies?
I watched it a 2nd time and realized

that the injured puppy in the girl's trash can was a warning to the girl: either you get back together with me or you get what the puppy got.

Loved the movie. Imperfect but so tense. I liked the ending.

Felt like a threat for sure. Matthias Schoenaerts does a really good job with the accent considering he's not a native English speaker.
Some other multiple viewing gems...
