Kafka vs Wink response to Daboll

UberAlias : 4/16/2024 4:02 pm
One of the things that struck me while listening to the Kafka interview yesterday was how drastic the difference between his response to Daboll was compared to Wink's.

By many accounts it was actually Kafka with his underperforming unit on Daboll's side of the ball who more often than anyone found himself on the other end of Daboll's wrath. Kafka has at least as much reason to be unhappy with Daboll as Wink did, if not more. The guy had play calling duties stripped away, possibly more than once, and now it seems all but certain he'll lose them for good. It remains to be seen how detrimental this will prove to be for his chances at a HC opportunity, but it can't be good.

On top of this, the team later blocked Kafka from interviewing for a lateral job with Seattle who is clearly interested.

And yet he was very mild mannered in his interval, cordial. But there's no way he can be happy about this, even with the "promotion".

Contrast with Wink (or Wink's camp) who goes behind backs to the media, taking the fight to the public domain. You've got reports of cursing out and storming out of meetings, etc, especially after being told they let his buddy go. Total freaking mess for weeks/months.

I'm not removing any blame here for Daboll in all this, but it is striking how drastic these two men chose to handle the situation. Maybe you can point to Wink being a veteran coordinator opposed to Kafka who's still in his first term, but I really don't see this being handled much differently even if Kafka had been more seasoned in the position. I linked to the transcript, but watch the video if you haven't, and consider Kafka's response verses Wink's.

Kafka-ascending career.

Wink-descending career. And an ego that could swallow Hank Stram's.
Not a Good Impression of Wink

Cancerous effect. It seemed to me that he was focused on positioning himself as the interim head coach if Daboll was booted. Telling he didn’t land another NFL gig this cycle.
Kafka is still employed by the team

Hard to bash a team and still work for them. It may also cost him his salary if he gets fired with cause.

I’m not saying you aren’t right and that Kafka came off very professional. He’s also lobbying for a higher job. It’s a bad look as Wink found out to go kicking and screaming. In private and in public are 2 different scenarios.

I’m not sure why the Giants blocked him from moving on. We demoted him basically, that to me says they are doing a bad job.

Hey I'm just glad the Giants don't have to face that scary Wink blitz twice a year! Lolol.

Kafka seems like a reasonable and professional Northwestern U. educated young man, with most likely a bright future.

Wink seems like a less reasonable and less professional older guy, influenced by Rob and Rex Ryan, whose career is nearing the end.

I'm sure there's more to it, but they're obviously 2 very different people.

One is an adult and the other is a petulant child.
As others have alluded to context matters

Kafka is an ascending coach, highly regarded by all accounts. Wink, meanwhile, is also well regarded but is approaching the end of his career. He hasn't had a shot at the Big gig just yet, and we know that's a sore subject. I'm sure he feels he's earned it. I don't know where reasonable ego ends and entitlement begins, but he's certainly not going to be shown up by a struggling first time head coach a decade his junior.
Kafka didn't bring an entourage with him

and brought much less ego. Losing play calling duties to an offensive head coach with great success as a coordinator isn't going to affect his chances of a head coaching position if the offense improves dramatically this year.
Kafka is a terrible

playcalling OC. Said it several times. I think he designs great plays, but he has no in game feel.

I do think he will learn and get better.

Wink, underperformed even though he seemed to be the beneficiary of most of the talent acquired. Try to stop the run please....
Wink…

He and his wife are going to happily retire in Florida at their newly renovated home. Someone close to me was talking with his wife at a horse barn in Hagerstown MD on a practical weekly basis. The only thing keeping HER in the NFL game was if hubby got a HC job. Otherwise, she was advocating his retirement.

great points about Kafka though. Just figured I’d share some intel about wink.
And while Wink handled things very poorly

There's also something to be said for having the discretion to not show up a prideful old rhino of a coach. There are consequences for how we talk to people. I like Daboll and think he's the guy, but I hope he took the whole thing as a learning experience. Certainly seems like a personal growth sorta experience.
Wink's time has passed

D squad…
thrunthrublue : 4/16/2024 7:46 pm : link
Seemed to feed off of Wink’s passion. At the same time the D was exasperated by Kafka’s penchant (and Jones’s specialty) for three and outs after rinse and repeat three and outs. Even after the many turnovers the D gifted the O with, all in all, it earned the offense a ranking of 31st. In a 32 team league. If not for qb Tommy D. the giants would be selecting higher in the draft. The rebuilding proceeds.
Wink Martindale is a punk bitch

That’s all we need to know.

He recently bought a house off SR 70 in Bradenton--just down the road from me.
Maybe the NYG are keeping Kafka around

to replace Daboll doesn't work out this year. Yes, I know it's a pretty far-fetched idea, but maybe our beats can start running with the idea to keep the b.s. flying.

The offense hasnt looked good

we shouldnt push and defend kafka just yet. He still has to prove, this offense can actually do something.
