Welcome to the most exciting event in sports and the hardest trophy to win. The NHL Stanley Cup playoffs. I am sure NYR fans and NYI fans probably have game threads, but this thread for all hockey discussion. Including the playoffs, the U18s, World Championships, awards, predictions and draft lottery. Playoffs start Saturday with all series beginning either Saturday, Sunday or Monday. Most series are every other day with an occasional 2nd day for travel or other reasons. Schedule in link.
The playoff match ups are finally set with LAK win (and LVG loss).
Here they are:
East
NYR* (1M) vs WAS (WC2) (Starts Sunday)
CAR (2M) vs NYI (3M) (Starts Saturday)
FLA (1A) vs TBL (WC1) (Starts Sunday)
BOS (2A) vs TOR (3A) (Starts Saturday)
West
DAL (1C) vs LVG (WC2) (Starts Monday)
WIN (2C) vs COL (3C) (Starts Sunday)
VAN (1P) vs NSH (WC1) (Starts Sunday)
EDM (2P) vs LAK (3P) (Starts Monday)
* President's Trophy Winner
My Predictions:
NYR in 5
CAR in 6
FLA in 6
BOS in 7
DAL in 6
COL in 7
VAN in 5
EDM in 7
What am I rooting for? Game 7's and OT's.
On the other end? The lottery teams will be (order determined at draft lottery which is usually during the playoffs):
32. SJS
31. CHI
30. ANA
29. CBJ
28. MTL
27. ARI/UTA
26. OTT
25. SEA
24. CAL
23. NJD
22. BUF
21. PHI
20. MIN
19. PIT
18. DET
17. STL
Playoff Schedule - (
New Window )
I also think the Isles have a shot at an upset. CAR is much better, but the Isles are playing with house money, play tough and together and have excellent goaltending.
I only picked one upset just because in most cases I think the favorite is better, but Dallas did not get any favors being the 1 seed in the West with Vegas as the 8. And Vegas being a little like Tampa in '21 when they got Kucherov for the playoffs after missing him all season. Vegas gets Mark Stone and Tomas Hertl after missing Stone for the past 2+ months and Hertl was acquired at the deadline but played just 6 games all year.
So, I can see Vegas beating Dallas if those two come back healthy. Two massive top 6 forward pieces added to a defending cup champ, with good goalie and solid D.
The winners:
Art Ross Trophy (most points): Nikita Kucherov
Rocket Richard Trophy (most goals): Auston Matthews
Jennings Trophy (fewest goals allowed (min 25 starts)): Connor Hellebuyck
That being said, I'm really annoyed about Game 1 being tomorrow at 5:00 as it conflicts with my nephew's wedding which has the commencement beginning at 5:15.
My nephew's wife-to-be enacted a cell phone ban for the ceremony so people won't be taking photos.
I know it's a losing cause, but I intentionally started a shit storm yesterday morning with a group text saying "phones are allowed during the ceremony as long as you're watching hockey, right?"
My wife and sister-in-law are rapid fired replies condemning my audacity to even suggest such disrespect for over an hour.
I'm hoping to be in the reception hall before the second period ends at least.
1. I bet $300 on the NYR to win the cup. I bet this in October with +1500 odds.
2. I bet Igor to win Conn Smythe.
3. In fairness I also bet Igor to win Vezina which he won't
4. I bet Connor Bedard to win Calder, but also bet Logan Cooley and Luke Hughes
5. I bet McDavid to win Hart and I bet Crosby to win Hart - I think Kucherov has this locked.
I hope we get that Igor.

You could always fake your sick. Just hold your stomach and give the eye roll look and walk out. People will think you have diarrhea and you can sit in your car in the parking lot (or on the toilet in the church, lol) and watch/listen. I mean it's a nephew. they won't even know if you're there.

Very much looking forward to this Round 1 rematch from last year. I like the Islanders chances with Roy at the helm.

That would be the selfless things to do. You're just looking out for everyone else.
WAS/NYR certainly looks like a mismatch on paper. The key for game 1 will be which team gets the first goal. The Caps are not a team that can come back from a deficit. If the Caps win that first game the pressure on the Rangers will be immense.
The Caps are playing with house money while the Rangers are supposed to demolish them. That can be a dangerous place to be (see Boston Bruins last year).
And yes, the Caps' record in the last 10 games were not great, but winning the last three games with a hot goalie puts them in a good spot going into this series.
It seems so in my head.
Yes! Yes! Yes!
Boston vs Toronto has potential for so much but i think Toronto rolls over them pretty easy
Rangers vs Wash isn't worth watching as that's be a quick 4 or 5 game series.
Nobody wants to watch NYI vs Carolina - boooooriiing
Colorado vs the Jets will be tons of fun to watch
Nash vs Vancouver - meh
Vegas & Dallas are both great teams and that should be top quality
Edmonton always fun to watch for McJesus but LA is fucking boring so I hope they don't drag that down too much.
Rangers
Carolina
Toronto
Florida
Colorado
Vancouver
LA
Dallas
That's who I have moving on.
Florida vs Dallas for the Cup.
It seems so in my head.
I remember so vividly Jack Edwards saying "Meet the new boss, same as the old boss" last time BOS beat TOR in the playoffs, not every year, but they own them in recent history.
Carolina over Tampa in 5
Edmonton over Dallas in 7
Carolina over Edmonton in 6
The West is better than any year I can remember.
DAL, WIN, and VAN are complete teams. Skill, forward depth, D and goalies. Will they show up? Who knows, only DAL is really playoff tested of the three.
LVG are reigning champs.
EDM and COL have the most skill in the league.
LAK and NSH are the "weak links" but LAK has the best defensive forward group in the conference and NSH may have the best goalie.
gun to my head, Dallas comes out of the West, but they're the one seed, so a non-chalk pick is Winnipeg. Love their deadline.
I think it's a mistake, but as they say "breaking up is hard to do" I think it's time for both. Some players value staying in one place their whole career and maybe that's important to Sid, but if I am Kyle Dubas I have a long talk with Sid about accepting a trade and starting the rebuild because it's coming to PIT IMO. I expected much more from this team - especially on the PP with all that talent and they massively under performed I don't see how it gets better with age.
McDavid needs some revenge. When COL won the cup in 2022 they swept EDM in the WCF.
In the past few days Lane Hutson, Cutter Gauthier and a couple more USNDTP players made their debuts. Nice to see.

Frankie Nazar (Dylan Duke was another one - but he maybe just signed his ELC and didn't debut).
He asked to be traded. Didn't want to sign with Philly, according to Briere.
Teams I absolutely despise and hope they don’t win- Carolina, Boston, Tampa, Winnipeg, Florida, and Washington.

Dallas has the deepest forward group in hockey imo.
Adding Tanev strengthens back line.
The Rags Caps will be fun for me locally. Lots of places become Caps' bars during the playoffs.
they've never won, or really come close to winning, so often when teams never win, it's hard to hate them.
even the old Jets (Coyotes) never won.
the franchises teams went to one conference finals in their history (and lost to Vegas).
Plus they had some memorable players like Selanne, Tkachuk, Housley, etc.
The current Jets have played 13 seasons, including this one. They've had some good regular seasons and the one run to the conference finals in 2018, when Vegas knocked them out, but other than that haven't really made a mark.

Pjcas should like this reason why I despise Winnipeg. The year his Habs beat my Leafs, the Habs subsequently went on to play Winnipeg. And I will never forget what MARK SCHEIFELE did to I think the Montreal player was JUSTIN EVANS. Almost killed him unnecessarily with a huge hit to the head while he was so vulnerable. Got a 4 game suspension I believe.
After that, I lost respect for that team. Like I said, my brother is a Habs fan and we both root for each others team in the playoffs when not playing against each other. I would like to see my brother happy if I can’t be. He feels the same.

Jake Evans. and I definitely don't like Scheifele, but that still didn't make me hate the Jets.
He's not as tight with Marchand (another Halifax guy) but they were amazing together playing for Team Canada so that would be fun to see too.

Good call on COL. I can see that. Those two (MacKinnon and Crosby) train together, do a bunch of philanthropic things together. They seem very like minded on and off the ice. I bet they would play well together too (like Marchand and Crosby).
I wonder what Canada will do for 4 nations and Olympics. Crosby or youth movement.
Isles-Canes: Carolina in 6 but I could see the Isles making it more difficult than that and upset them in 7
Bruins-Leafs: I think Boston in 7
Panthers-Lightning: Should be a fun one. As much i’m tired of Tampa I think they win in 7 due to goaltending
Stars-Knights: what a shitty end of the stick for Dallas to draw Vegas. Stars in 7
Canucks-Predators: no idea what to think on this one
Jets-Avs: Arguably the best opening round series. Jets in 7

He would need to pull a Joe Thornton or Zdeno Chara for that I think (if he stays healthy). I see him going out on top more than milking it. But who knows, sometimes these guys who have been doing nothing else but this since they were 5 or 6 years old cling to it.

From wikipedia....
Quote:
...Shortly after the trade announcement, it was reported that Gauthier had refused to sign with the Flyers,[8][9] and Gauthier had stated in an interview the previous month that he did not think being drafted by the Flyers was going to "roll over well," because his favorite team as a child was the rival Pittsburgh Penguins.[10] Later that evening, in response to questions from the press on the matter, Flyers management confirmed that Gauthier had informed the team in May 2023, that he did not intend on signing with the Flyers...
The real story is this. Gauthier wanted to leave BC after his freshmen year last season. He felt he was ready, and he was. Philly didn't want him yet. Not only is Philly rebuilding but you can't blame them for not wanting to burn one year off his entry level for a few worthless regular season games. Apparently Gauthier thought he had the leverage and wanted to work the system and Philly didn't play ball. Gauthier took it personally and cut them off after that.
Is it right what he did? I haven't seen a player do that before, after only their freshmen season. But a player can do what they want...and a top player like him could try and use leverage. Philly could have called his bluff and made Gauthier play two more years at BC before becoming a FA able to sign with anyone. But they didn't, they traded him. So it is what it is.
The Ducks traded for him knowing what they would need to do, and they did it...they signed him this year after the national championship game. Gauthier played one meaningless regular season game with them last night and burned a whole year off his entry level. Nazar did the same thing with the Blackhawks. Hutson the same with the Habs. So apparently this is becoming a thing where top players are using leverage to get teams to lose a year of entry level contract control on that player. Flyers didn't play ball and he said eff you.
In the end it happened to the Flyers and the worst sports fans in the country of Philly. So screw them! haha
Yeah, that 100% had nothing to do with it. But could Gauthier have said that though? Sure, he's a cocky teenager...that says shit. But that wasn't the reason he wouldn't play for Philly. He also said in an interview before the national championship game vs. Denver that there were going to be a lot of tears on Denver's side after the game. How did that work out for him?

I cringed when I was watching that interview. Just bad karma.
I think they got a decent return, but not as good as potentially Gauthier can be. They basically traded the 5th pick in the 2022 draft for the 6th pick in the 2020 draft and a 2nd. And normally this would be ok, pretty fair even Drysdale was great early on, but hurt or no bueno since.
I still think Drysdale will be good, a top 4 D on his team, but Gauthier can be a star. And I'm not sure I'd move him off C.
NYI@CAR 5:00pm start on TBS
TOR@BOS 8:00pm start on TBS
Other news...
Drouin out for 1st series. Big loss for COL, he was on their top line and PP1 units.
Also, something to watch in CAR, Svechnikov was out last playoffs. he's been rusty since I have seen them, but improving and he is an impact player when healthy.

“Very excited to represent my country.”
yep. he won MVP. He was the best player on the ice all season, just about every time BC played.
Excluding Bedard, the last time I was that impressed with a player at WJC was Lafreniere in 2020, lol.
Excluding Bedard, the last time I was that impressed with a player at WJC was Lafreniere in 2020, lol.
Yeah, Bedard is the best I have seen though people who know say Forsberg dominated that tournament like no one else.
What Gretzky did there at 16 is historic. Lindros and Jagr dominated at 17.
but Forsberg, Gretzky, Lindors and Jagr were before i had access, so I take historians words for it.
The best recent individual I have seen other than Bedard was Trevor Zegras. He didn't even get best forward, I think Stutzle got it.
One other under the radar performance - not in points but in play - was Lias Andersson. He was captain of Sweden when they lost to Canada and famously threw the silver medal in the stands - I thought he would be a really good NHL player.
watched first 2 periods last w/e, Eagles and top line started out with some chances but Davis was so solid, gave up not a sliver of hope, and by midway 2nd the feeel of the game had swung.
Back on topic, always makes me nervous when predominant sentiment is to give a team no chance to win…Caps…lgr

1-1 12 left in the 2nd.
2-1 CAR in the 3rd (16 min left)

I have a hard time highly ranking a Freddy Andersen led team.
He had some decent ANA years/playoff performances but was a circus with Toronto AND wasn't sure he would even be an option with the blood clots/health issues until a couple weeks ago.
And if it was Kochetkov it would be worse.
Seriously. Twice they dive like they are playing Premier League soccer.

refs correctly let a few go too. pretty good game by the isles but just like every other time they play carolina their goaltending/ST outplays isles and they get the win.
I'm surprised that got the slashing call without at least an embellishment unsportsmanlike penalty to off-set it.

agreed. the call on lee early was weak too.
not the officials fault the isles ST suck but hopefully the rest of the series they are clear on carolina's obvious intent to take advantage of that.
Go no one...hate these two teams.

Anderson was recently the quickest goalie to a certain win amount. Him being hurt all the time takes away from bow good he is when healthy
I think the Rangers could match their physicality, it's matching their intensity and commitment that I worry about.
Long way to go before that anyway.

Yeah, most wins first 500 games. Goalie wins is not the best metric to evaluate a goalie. He beat out Braden Holtby by 1. Still commendable and like I said in the thread when I posted that if I had 100 guesses at who owns this "record" I never would have guessed it.
I'm just not sold on Andersen being able to win deep into the playoffs.
he was fantastic today though. Maybe he proves me wrong.
they were +5k before today's game, so an extra $3k is right there for the taking!
Isles have been playing well; but for Panarin’s artistry, NYR would be second seed.
To Rob’s point it is fair and it’s not like Laviolette hasn’t amped the intensity but for the uncertainty in that vein of Zib and CK. But Brind d’Amour is on a whole different level and his team is the mirror their coach
I wonder if any other player has played all 82 regular season games and then missed a playoff game.
I'm sure someone has gotten sick or something over the years but it has to be pretty unusual.
not that it would necessarily make a difference, but he scored 40 goals and had almost 100 points.
BOS owns TOR.....again. This could be a sweep if Nylander doesn't come back.
(means Caps in 4)
Agreed. None of this overthinking, playing down to opponents, squeaking by with 1-0 wins 2-1 wins, and the RANGERS having to be the ones to climb out of serious deficits and get wins to stay alive in games 5 and 6.
It's time to think. If you cannot beat this Caps teams with ease, holy shit. Lol.
Sweeps still exist. Make it happen, Rangers.
For the love of God, being up 2-0 in a series is a good thing. Keep the momentum going for yourselves, not the other way around.
they avoided the Lightning in round 1, who I think are vastly overrated by many people - including most of the NYR fans on here, and got the Leafs who they own.
If TBL can knock off FLA in an intrastate battle, BOS has a cake walk, IMO, to the conference finals. FLA BOS would be awesome, but BOS walks over TBL IMO.
I know I'm getting ahead of myself but a Rangers Bruins conference finals would be incredible.

Spot on--Rangers fans are terrified are having any confidence about anything.
I'm not confident about winning the Cup, no team has more than a 20% chance at this stage. But the Rangers should demolish this Caps team.
What the hell does he know?
You are only saying this to impress me.
Uncalled interference calls irritate the shit out of me. The league would open up so much more if they were more meticulous about it.

Ha! I was hoping to irritate
no idea. I mentioned it above. it's a mystery. I only assume he was injured in practice. I can't remember any player ever playing 82 games in the regular season and then miss game 1 of the playoffs. that's 100 point player out of your lineup.
One of the Leafs players asked about it said "hopefully he doesn't miss much time" but that's as much as I've heard said about it.
I'm still not sold on TBL going on a long run, but they're a much tougher match up for BOS (or anyone) than TOR. And it's not like TOR has no talent, with or without Nylander, but goalie as usual is their Achilles heel and they don't have depth.
Very deep forwards, Bobrovsky he recaptured the fountain of youth, but other than Forsling they don't have good defensive D.

apparently all the analytics say it's the right thing to do, but I hate it too.
but that was a very weak penalty call on the cross check. I wonder if they call it if it was a 1-goal game.
I think all the ESPN guys are good.
Bob Wischusen. He's awesome and I like Ryan Callahan as the broadcast analyst more than as a studio analyst.
Rangers Caps get Sean McDonough who is also really good with Ray Ferraro who I don't love. - like his commentary, hate his voice.
The biggest question for me is in the Av's net. Georgiev (tonights starter) was a circus the second half and Annunen was streaky. Georgiev also though has the ability to be stellar - who shows up?
The Jets had a great trade deadline IMO.
They got Sean Monahan from MTL and Tyler Toffoli from NJD - both are on their second line (along with very good Nikolaj Ehlers) and both can do everything. Love watching that line play.
Kyle Connor on WIN's top line is a sneaky goal scorer. Wicked shot.
Some former Rangers on the Jets roster. Namestnikov is on the 4th line and Neal Pionk on their 3rd D pair.
The Avs big deadline add was Mittelstad from BUF - and also a D - Sean Walker from PHI. former Rangers on COL are the aforementioned Georgiev and Jack Johnson (he played a year in NY, right?)
Losing Drouin will hurt COL and moves Zach Parise up to their 1st line.
There are times I watch MacKinnon and I feel like he's as dominant as McDavid - and Makar sometimes I feel like is what Bobby Orr must have been like. Neither MacKinnon or Makar are as good as McDavid or Orr but you get the point.
This will be a fun series to watch.

Thanks PJ good stuff. Johnson is still being villified by Rangers fans for how bad he was the time he played here. As usual with everything Rangers, it's blown out of proportion.
That story was just horrendous. Both parents involved. Borrowed high leverage loans against his future earnings.

I think practically every goal from the point that isn't tipped is soft, lol, but they didn't show a good view to see the screen.
If CHP is watching, as a former goalie he'd have a good perspective.
what did you think? Did you get a good view?
Parise just cannot keep up with MacKinnon. Not sure what you can do, they lost Drouin, but maybe put Lehkonen up there.
Georgiev has had bad moments, but came up big end of the period to keep it a one goal game.
So doubt they bring in 3rd goalie.
COL needs to score on this PP.
Some of this is not just Georgiev, the COL D is pretty porous.
Some of this is not just Georgiev, the COL D is pretty porous.
Colorado d is awful. They're terrible at physically preventing guys from making plays near the crease. It's a constant problem and has been for years. You watch the Jets and they don't let anyone make plays around the net, most of the Jets goals were more on Avs D than Georgie. Not to say he had no blame, but he has terrible defense in front of him.
There are times I watch MacKinnon and I feel like he's as dominant as McDavid - and Makar sometimes I feel like is what Bobby Orr must have been like. Neither MacKinnon or Makar are as good as McDavid or Orr but you get the point.
This will be a fun series to watch.
Mackinnon is a totally different player than McDavid. Mac is a power skater and very physical, McDavid is a finesser.
Canucks and Maple Leafs are fun to watch with their playoff struggles.
Canucks and Maple Leafs are fun to watch with their playoff struggles.
Yes Nashville is gritty and scrappy and always down for a dogfight. Rather were recently one of the hottest teams in the league. They love being extremely physical and punishing the opposition. Forsberg is their top playmaker. No one wanted to face them in rd1.

McDavid is not a "finesser" his style is closer to Crosby than Gretzky which is part of what makes him so unique, but where did I say they were the same player? I said at times I feel like MacKinnon is as dominant as McDavid. A finesse player is Panarin or Jack Hughes, Johnny Gaudreau but McDavid is not a finesse player.
2023 hit stats (not the perfect measure but as good a one as we have for this topic):
McDavid: 118
MacKinnon: 55
Jack Hughes: 10
Panarin: 18
Gaudreau: 2
Gaudreau has less hits in a 11 year career than McDavid had in 2023.
Not a finesse player.
Tonight the final 2 series start (EMDvsLAK @10pm and DALvsLVG @9:30pm)
Plus game 2 in CARvsNYI (CAR leads 1-0) @7:30pm and BOSvsTOR (BOS leads 1-0) @7pm
Game 1 winners win the series 2/3rds of the time.
If CHP is watching, as a former goalie he'd have a good perspective.
what did you think? Did you get a good view?
I was watching. There was such traffic, so many bodies at the crease and a couple moving in the slot can't see as how he did. Even if you do "see" it, it's so late as to make a reaction look weak and wobbly because the mind/eye to gun hands reaction is confused. It's on you before you know it.
So much fire power. It is fun and the town on the prairie is stoked. Can't help but root for Bowman, no?
a couple seasons ago, Edmonton set a record for the most post-season losses in a single post-season when you score 5 or more goals in the game. I know it's one game but COL could break that.
Hagens is an underager (2025 draft eligible), Eiserman will be a top 15 pick in the 2024 draft. Hutson (Lane's younger brother) will also be a 1st/2nd round pick in 2024, and more. should be a competitive squad.

I just mean their skating styles, nothing to do with hits.
At one point I used to share with the kids I was coaching, clips of Sidney Crosby because his tight turns, Mohawk turns, and edgework (just google "Sidney Crosby edge work") in general was the best in the league.
MacKinnon is similar to Crosby and so is McDavid.
What do you call Crosby in this clip?
I'm not sure how to differentiate a finesse skater from a power skater, but it doesn't matter.

And you get the knee jerk reaction from fans "oh, you're just a fan it's why you're on your couch and not in a front office" - well if I were in the front office I'm sure as shit not hiring the epitome of a retread, Lindy Ruff to be my coach.
He went to a Stanley Cup as Buffalo's coach 25 years ago and hasn't been back since.
His teams have won 2 playoff series in the past 17 years.
Who sees him and says "that's my guy"?
I have been saying that for years. So many of these franchises are run by idiots.
(Like Gettleman)

I'd say that's more finesse style, you never see MacKinnon make moves like that. He tends to just blow by guys and make cuts. Those moves are unreal.

yeah, because he's so fast, but what makes players like MacKinnon and McDavid so dangerous is they don't slow down when they get the puck like most players and they can demonstrate the skill they do as high speeds.
Sometimes it seems like they speed up with the puck but we know that's not true. In either case MacKinnon I believe has the highest burst speed recorded at least this year I think since it's been recorded, but McDavid is the fastest player every year. they're more similar than you think.
2-2 2nd period winding down.
Gives TOR their first lead vs BOS all season. Not just in these two playoff games, but all season.
TOR up 3-2, just over 6 left.
both, Bertuzzi got the slash, but Coyle and Lyubushkin got matching minors. No idea what Coyle did there.
TOR kills the PP, 2:30 left
Swayman was undefeated vs TOR. I get they rotate goalies and Ullmark played well, but why?

I personally feel like they're closer than most people think. MacKinnon has one of the most deadly one timers in the league.
no goal it was a high stick.

Thank God they didn’t play Swayman….don’t like seeing him….glad he was on the sidelines….anyhow, we need AM to be the man…tonight he stepped up bigtime. Sammy too…..
But I don’t feel my boys (Leafs) have the upper hand. Either team could win on the road just as easily…it all depends on heart and your goalie….

Toronto outplayed BOS most of the game, but that is often the case except when these two teams play...except on the scoreboard where BOS usually dominates.
TOR stole home ice which is always your goal as the road team to start a playoff series (at least a split). now they don't need to win another game in BOS and can win the series.

they're going to change that rule I think at some point.
It was 2-1 when I turned it on. Vegas got a PP goal (weak call) by Hertl in about 5 seconds of PP time then DAL (Robo) answers back.
3-2 Vegas as the 1st winds down.

DAL gave up the 8th fewest.

DAL doesn't have enough to come back vs the 2024 Lightning (or I mean the 2024 playoff Golden Knights, who look very little like the 2023-2024 Golden Knights).

1st round of the NHL playoffs is the best.
Winnipeg and Vancouver were nuts. Rangers had a great crowd when they could get around how boring Washington is and even Florida was a great atmosphere. I didn't watch Carolina, who could lol. I hope Toronto wins 3 more in a row and Boston misses the playoffs for 5 straight years. And fuck Boston fans for making me say that about Toronto.

I have never seen anything like Winnipeg. That crowd is insane.
you slacker, pj, taking 8 hrs 44 minutes off between posts. It's not acceptable.
What are you signifying by the squib I extracted? I had an opposite reaction, seeing Cassidy behind the bench, after almost a year (minus NYR game). He remains such a compelling story, to me.

The way Vegas used LTIR, like TBL used LTIR in 2021 (and TOR used LTIR this year) is eventually going to be changed IMO.
Three years in a row, Vegas has put Mark Stone on LTIR and the way LTIR works is you are allowed to exceed the cap by that full contract amount and they already had Lehner and his $5M on LTIR so they added Hertl, Hannifin and Mantha at the deadline and in the playoffs there is no cap so Stone can come back and they can all play - they sneak in as the 8 seed but really would/should have been a 2/3 with that roster.
Kucherov is the only player I know to miss an entire season, return for the playoffs and win a cup (and he led the playoffs in points). It may have happened but I'm not aware if it did. Stone didn't do that, but he missed 30 games this year, 40 last year, and 45 the year before.
They basically spent $92M (or more) on an $84M cap.
Good strategy, and it's legal, but it's not long for the NHL IMO.

Also commented, prolly lost in the shuffle, that still at 3-1, Varlamov looked totally gassed (shot totals by CAR were crazy high); only a matter of time--you said on 1st goal it was a shot he should have gloved). 3rd goal, he turned 180 the wrong way and about a second too late. He was done.
Not that a coach would ever lift a keeper late game in which he had kept you in the game, but if any coach could have seen he was struggling/so fatigued it would have been Roy. Feel bad for both.

ah, that's what you were talking about, too eliptical for me at an early hour. I commented last night (earlier than your Stone comment) that he looked as if he hadn't missed a shift! Ha!

CAR had 39 shots on net. Doesn't seem excessive. It was a regulation game. I can see if this double or triple OT, but I admit this is a blind spot for me.
Why would shot attempts fatigue a goal so much? Does he just go down on every shot attempt? Is that what goalies are supposed to do? or is that just Varlamov's style?
Plus, NYI had like 36 blocked shots.
I think top 5 may be a little too early (just based on projections not potential) and wherever WIN pick is will be too late.

Why would shot attempts fatigue a goal so much? Does he just go down on every shot attempt? Is that what goalies are supposed to do? or is that just Varlamov's style?

To my eyes watching keepers, and my humble, diddly experience in net:
I think CAR had 96 shot attempts and that was with ~ 10 minutes left. CAR is heavy on the forecheck and many players with good offensive skills swarming the offensive zone. Each time a player at, irrespective of, slot, point, circle, etc. winds up or cradles for a wrist shot the keeper has to re-position for maximum net coverage vs likely shot angle; duck, wiggle, and crane to find the shooter through traffic, and if his line of sight is poor, he's likely to butterfly to max out pad coverage on low shots and hope he sees it in time with blocker/glove regardless if the shot gets through. It doesn't matter, or even complicates his head, if his defender is going down for a (successful) blocked shot bec. he can't assume the result and the defender going low has to affect his line of sight and max further adjustment, at the very last moment.
You may not buy what I'm saying, that's fine, you're consummately knowledgeable, yet even if you don't: what I saw from Varlamov at time of my post last night, it was 3-1, and he had gone down for a non-save and just squatted/on his knees/pads, resting for moments before struggling to his feet as the play went to neutral zone. This was repeated. As I said this AM, his 'effort' on the 3rd goal was inept, slow, showing mental as well as physical fatigue.
When you do so much dropping to your knees and picking yourself up under the stress of pretty much constant assault from the opposing team, it wears.
As an aside, it still bothers me, the butterfly style, all the more effective with the behemoths in goal. I was laughing Sunday night as they showed Shesterkin from behind--his legs look like toothpicks compared to Bobrovsky, Hellebucyk, Vasilevskiy, et al. I loved your Canadians diminutive Rogie Vachon: he'd maintain a crouch, both pads off ice, until the shot was taken. He was cat quick and so compact. But it's not the way the game is played now.
Of the 16 playoff teams (main goalie):
East
1. NYR: Shesterkin (Russia)
2. FLA: Bobrovsky (Russia)
3. BOS: Swayman (USA), Ullmark (Sweden)
4. CAR: Andersen (Denmark)
5. TOR: Samsonov (Russia)
6. NYI: Varlamov (Russia)
7. TBL: Vasilevskiy (Russia)
8. WAS: Lindgren USA)
West:
1. VAN: Demko (USA)
2. DAL: Oettinger (USA)
3. WIN: Hellebuyck (USA)
4. COL: Georgiev (Bulgaria/Russia)
5. EDM: Skinner (Canada)
6. LAK: Talbot (Canada)
7. NSH: Sarros (Finland)
8. LVG: Thompson (Canada)
so of the 16 non-playoff teams you have goalies like Hart (who knows if he's playing again), Jarry who was a disaster, Binnington, Levi, who are all Canadian, Woll, Wolf, Quick, etc. who are American, but no Canadian stars in net right now.
They had Price, Roy, Brodeur, MAF, etc. for so long, I wonder who their goalie will be for the 4 nations and Olympics.
Seems like I'm missing someone.
2-2.
Verhage with his 5th career playoff OT game winner.
FLA up 2-0
Verhage with his 5th career playoff OT game winner.
FLA up 2-0
Verhaeghe
MTL tried to give away Casey DeSmith. He was the odd man out from Samuel Montembeault and Cayden Primeau - so not exactly a murderers row of goaltenders, so it's weird to see him starting a playoff game, even with an injury. Another GM kicking himself for ignoring backup goalie.
I would probably roll the dice and start Arturs Silovs. Some of you hockey junkies may recall Silovs from the Latvia World Championship team who beat USA for the bronze last year (USA undefeated in prelim play loses in semis to f-ing Germany and then loses bronze to f-ing Latvia lol- both losses in OT). he was a 6th round pick for VAN. Maybe catch lightning in a bottle. Silovs is bigger too. Like 6' 4" big, DeSmith is under sized for today's goalies.
NYR and FLA "held serve" with FLA providing us the first OT game of the playoffs.
Tonight:
BOS looks to take back home ice @TOR 7:00, series tied at 1
DAL looks to avoid a disastrous 0-2 start at home vs LVG 9:30
EDM looks to hold serve and go up 2-0 vs LAK at home 10:00
Nylander possible to return
USA won gold last year. And groupings are determined by the prior year's finish. Canada always has a "lesser" team here than they normally would because some of their players are still in juniors post-season.
The Groups
Group A:
USA (2023 1st)
Slovakia (2023 4th)
Finland (2023 5th)
Latvia (2023 7th)
Norway (2023 9th)
Group B:
Sweden (2023 2nd)
Canada (2023 3rd)
Czechia (2023 6th)
Switzerland (2023 8th)
Kazakhstan (won lower bracket, Germany relegated)
Vancouver: 18
Nashville: 16
Vancouver: 18
Nashville: 16
That was it. VAN had Casey DeSmith in net. Basically did the 300 defense (from the movie 300).
THU April 25 07:00AM ET: USA vs Slovakia
SAT April 27 10:30AM ET: USA vs Norway
SUN April 28 11:00AM ET: USA vs Latvia
TUE April 30 11:00AM ET: USA vs Finland
USA should cruise through the prelims and be 1st or 2nd at worst in their group.

And 34 NHL head coaching changes since the start of 2020. Remarkable.
but if there is any NHL player I dislike more than Marchand it's not by a lot and I can't think of who it would be right now.

And Lemieux has skill too - but also less than Marchand IMO.
They will dominate offensive zone time tonight
Marner to Knies TOR up 1 on BOS in the 2nd 1-0. Samsonov two breakaway saves.
tie game 1-1. Marchand got away with a trip to open up the ice for Trent.
What's the charitable way to say it? Crafty play by Marchand leading up to that goal.
another softie IMO. Good shot, but Samsonov looked like he has a clear view of it the whole way.

Rangers had that exact goal yesterday. High, short side, normally stopped.

not really, Roslovic’s shot was from an extreme angle, way less likely to find cord, Marchand off the circle, if that’s what you’re referring to

but I'm not much of a in-between periods watch the studio crew guy. what do we expect?
I like the TSN crew who does Habs games, but I liked Don Cherry too.
Meanwhile I didn't watch, I switched over to EDM vs LAK.
LAK took a 2-goal lead and then Brett Kulak with a blast cuts the lead to 1. EDM controlling play, but not strong on the blue line or in net so they will need to win some track meets.
LAK comes right back with the breakaway when the D loses Doughty and he scores to restore the 2-goal lead.

Weak?
McAvoy has a clear line to the puck behind his own net and is going to clear it and gets pulled down from behind. lol
You have to make that call in the defensive zone.

What a snipe by Kopitar.
USA goals from Eiserman and Hutson, two 2024 draft eligibles.
Hutson is Lane's younger brother.
Hagens (a BC commit) is a 2025 draft eligible.
Hagens probably passes both, but Eiserman is a scorer and I don't think he's getting proper value in mock drafts. He has an NHL shot. I read some beat writers talking Habs saying even if the Habs trade down into the 10-15 range they would not take him and I don't understand that.
Still a long way to go, maybe Nylander returns and gives them a boost in scoring. They need it
I was watching a review of their roster, they are easily the favorite. Doesn't mean they'll win - they have a tough bracket with Sweden, but they're loaded.
Hagens 3rd point of the game.
He'll be drafted this year, but he needs work. Good project prospect.
6-0 2nd under 3 left.
CAR@NYI at 7:30 (CAR up 2-0) Sorokin gets the net
in between NFL draft picks.....
Yeah, his dad was 6'3" and had the highest selling NHL jersey for a while.
To say he's raw though, is kind of a slap in the face to the word raw. lol. I do think he'll be drafted this year, but he needs work.
I think he hit a growth spurt and is still growing in to his body. Sometimes those uber tall players (like Tage Thompson) take a little longer to regain their coordination. Only thing I can think of. Today was my first time seeing him. he didn't make team Slovakia U18 last year as an under-ager so I hadn't seen him until today.
Central Scouting has him as the #51 ranked Euro skater, so that's probably a 4th/5th round pick is my guess. I could also be overstating things because they played a far better team today and no one really looked good on Slovakia.
lol. I know what he means and thought that was perfect.
Another good example. So true.
In this case though I hate how they manipulated LTIR and Dallas gets penalized for a team taking advantage of a rules loophole.
Can't believe that elbow to the head by Oshi on Panarin right after the faceoff wasn't called.
I think Rempe has the same challenge Judge has in BB. The low called strikes on him have some similarity where Rempe hit people cause of the height disparity.
You watch for the same reason we all do, we love our team.
it's a 2-1 series and TOR has had a lot of good moments.
I think a lot of this is on Keefe. Marchand is in their heads - especially Bertuzzi.
The coach needs to fix that - and so does their captain, Tavares.

#NYR Will Cuylle on jawing with #ALLCAPS Tom Wilson, the player he said he modeled his game after on his draft night.
"It's been good. Obviously, you want to compete out there against other competitors. I used to watch him a lot when I was younger, It's pretty cool."
In this case though I hate how they manipulated LTIR and Dallas gets penalized for a team taking advantage of a rules loophole.
They've pulled the LTIR hijinks with Stone for THREE STRAIGHT SEASONS! I mean, come on.
NYI has to be frustrated. I thought they outplayed CAR much of the game last night. But....out comes the rare Freddy Anderson stolen game and Sorokin yanked.
VAN@NSH at 7:30 Tied 1-1 (DeSmith back in net for VAN)
WIN@COL at 10:00 Tied 1-1
EDM@LAK at 10:30 Tied 1-1
Triple under-ager (16 year old) Gavin McKenna, 2026 draft eligible, with 2 goals.
USA plays next tomorrow vs Norway at 10:30 AM ET
I said people shouldn't fear TBL, but that was mostly Rangers and Bruins fans who wanted to avoid them.
FLA looks especially good though (except on D).
What do you think is the best strategy for shutting down a high-powered offense like Edmonton? GO on offense?
What do you think is the best strategy for shutting down a high-powered offense like Edmonton? GO on offense?
I think so. Skinner has been bad.
He's given up 9 goals in two games with an 85% save %. Luckily EDM is EDM and they scored 11 goals in those two games to salvage a split.
it's criminal how EDM has failed to address goalie during McDavid's career.
He's still *just* 34, so I do think he continues his career and he's coming off back to back to back PPG+ seasons and he's a really good face off guy so he should continue playing, but he's one of those players I think of from this era as synonymous with an organization.
Like Crosby and PIT.
Bergeron and BOS.
Ovi and WAS.
Maybe a couple more....
I think there is a chance he stays with the Lightning but they don't have a ton of cap space and they have a bunch of needs.
I like him for MTL. Was hoping to get him with WIN pick, but that's not happening. He's a top 15 player at worst IMO.
I'll see if I can find clips, but the edge work, speed, shot, etc. are elite. He's 16.
Pretty chippy game with Canada and Czechia - 3 or 4 ejections. I wonder if any suspensions. Canada won 6-0.
2024 draft lottery scheduled for May 7
per NHL.com
1-0 VAN.
In fairness NSH only has 4.
they had 12 shots on net. fewest ever for a playoff game winner.
2 PP goals.
What happened????
What happened????
There was an avalanche in the 3rd.
two PP goals early in the 3rd gave COL the lead, then both WIN d fell at the COL blue line lol creating an odd man rush that COL scored to make it 4-2. then I think it was 2 ENGs or I forget how COL got their 5th.
Also last night EDM skill on full display, 3 points from McDavid, 3 from Draisaitl, 2 from Hyman, 3 for RNH, 2 for Kane....
EDM is averaging 6 goals per game through 3 games.
there are 4 NHL games:
NYIvsCAR at 2:00 - possible handshake game, CAR up 3-0
TBLvsFLA at 5:00 - possible handshake game, FLA up 3-0
TORvsBOS at 8:00 - BOS leads 2-1
LVGvsDAL at 10:30 - Vegas leads 2-0
Hope it's nothing mental health or anything serious.
If the story comes out explaining it this way, I am afraid he will get hatred and vitriol from the fans and anonymous online trolls. I hope he doesn't see it if this was the case.
2 assists for Hagens.

Hoping against hope I’m afraid. Would be great if he can get them back into the series.
VGK their back lines so big and mobile and their Fs so good on fore- and back-check: suffocation strikes deep, into your heart it will creep…Cassidy’s a man with a gun over there…Boston gonna look foolish again?
One for LJ Mooney (Logan Cooley's cousin) and one on a PS for Christian Humphreys.
6-0 after 2.
1-0 CAR.

only like the 15th straight playoff game vs. carolina where this has happened to isles. thank goodness it's draft weekend.
carolina ties it with less than 5m to go with an extra skater.
isles lose in OT.
technically there was 5:53 left.
Quote:
should give us the powerball numbers.
technically there was 5:53 left.
and it's not OT yet, but close enough.
TBL up 2-0, I hope they switch back to NYIvsCAR 2 OT.
would have bet against that outcome. hope they can just get to a game 6 so it feels like a real series.
They are up 3-0 as the 1st is winding down.
Goals from Stamkos (PP), Hagel, and Point (SH).
TBL up 2-0, I hope they switch back to NYIvsCAR 2 OT.
The fact that they did this in the middle of the fucking play and didn't wait for a stop is insane.
Nylander in - sounds like they are saying he missed time due to migraines.
Swayman owns them too.
DALvsLVG last night best game of the playoffs so far. there is no room on that ice. Wyatt Johnson, the OT hero on a bad(ish) angle shot is a star at 20. How did the GW goal start? a face off win in the d-zone and a stretch pass from Robo.
COLvsWIN at 2:30, COL leads 2-1
NSHvsVAN at 5:00, VAN leads 2-1, DeSmith in net again
WASvsNYR at 8:00, NYR leads 3-0
LAKvsEDM at 10:30, EDM leads 2-1
After two games for all teams, Hagens leads the tournament with 7 pts (3/4) and Eiserman is 2nd with 6 and leads for goals (5). McKenna is right behind Eiserman with 5 points.
Difference is Canada played Sweden and Czechia and has two easy games (Switzerland and Kazakhstan). USA plays Latvia today which should be easy, but then finished group play with Finland.
McKenna could lead this tournament at 16.
Eiserman needs 3 goals to catch Caufield for most goals in USNDTP history.
Goals from Hutson (assisted by Hagens), Connelly (2024 draft eligible), and Stiga (with assists from Connelly and Hutson)
Connelly with a 4-point game so far, including a "Michigan". I don't care if the old-timers hate it, I love it. It's so hard to do.
Hagens with 3 pts (1G/2A)
Stiga with 3 points (1G/2A)
Eiserman with 2 pts (1G/1A)
Hutson with 2 points (1G/1A)
EJ Emery with 2 points (2A)
6 min left.
Latvia had a lot of chances. US goalie (Parsons) played well - he's been lifted to get backup (Kempf) some minutes.
McKenna (2026 draft eligible) 3 pts (1G/2A)
Porter Martone (2025 draft eligible probably Hagens top competition for #1) 3 pts (3G)
Iginla 1G
After 3 games
Hagens still leads the tourney in points: 10
Eiserman has 8
McKenna has 8
Martone has 8
Connelly has 7
Stiga has 7
USA Finland for top spot in group A.
USA 24:3 goal differential
Finland 14:1 goal differential
USA vs Finland Tuesday at 11ET
Seguin had chance to ice VGK in 1st and extend the lead to 4 - 0 but was thwarted twice on solo breakaways. Stars very active and fast in the 1st but Knights began to slow them down in 2nd and evened it at 2.
Jeff Paterson
@patersonjeff
Rick Tocchet says he has a line-up decision for #Canucks today for Game 4. Wouldn’t reveal more than that
I hated trading him, but he has no role on MTL given his age and their status as a team. he has really come into his own as a 2-way top 6 player.
Avs up 3-1
Another PP goal, 4-1 COL after 2.
another sneaky good play by Lehkonen.

With Vancouver/Nashville, we should be prepared for the possibility Arturs Silovs starts for the Canucks. Not sure what happened here, though.

If he's healthy enough to be the EBUG, why wasn't he healthy enough to start?
unless this was coaches decision and if it was, why not at least make him the backup?
Just seems weird to me. Especially since while I suggested Silovs a few days ago, DeSmith played good enough last game and I'd at least expect him to be backup over Tolopilo.
Tolopilo was just ok in the AHL and has never played in an NHL game.

the whole VAN offense is being smothered. They had three top 20 players - Miller, Hughes, and Pettersson. Pettersson has been invisible (other than his defensive miscues).
I don't remember seeing a team play D this way in the playoffs since the Devils popularized the neutral zone trap.
3-2 under 3 left in the game.
LAKvsEDM now.....
Couple that with his young, skill-less team vs a top 5 PK and this is what you get.
The Kings were all over the Oilers last night, outshooting, out-hitting and controlling play. they were physical with McDavid, not giving him any space.
Skinner played really well and EDM heads home up 3-1. He basically stole a game.
FLA vs TBL 7:00 FLA up 3-1 - see if the Sergachev bump can continue for TBL and make a series out of it.
DAL vs LVG 9:30 LVG up 2-1 as DAL somehow salvaged a game 3 win. They can steal back home ice if they pull off a win tonight and it would be a series where through 4 only road teams have won.
tomorrow night, 4 games, 4 possible handshakes, this is when you see some desperate hockey.
Hellebuyck
Bobrovsky
Demko
I had it as Demko prior to being injured, now I think it's Hellebuyck. Though he's having a rough go in the playoffs.
Agreed. I think playoffs considered it's Swayman (so far). Igor has benefited from the fewest expected goals due to competition, fairly or unfairly, and Swayman had a better regular season. Not that you mentioned Igor, but....I had a prop bet on him before the season to win Vezina.

scoreless in the 1st
1-0 FLA
TBL goal waved off. fortunate for FLA.
that was a huge goal.
4-1 FLA
Maybe Stamkos final game for TBL.
What a game and series.
DAL up 4-2 with 1:20 left
No way as a number 1 seed they should be playing Knights a great team in first round
Sometimes you find teams need a little spark to galvanize them for a long playoff run. An OT win, a comeback, etc.
We'll see how VAN responds to their late game magic.
I don't think he misses the game, but who knows.
Also heard Woll gets the net for TOR, but Keefe has not made it public yet who the goalie will be.
USA has been dominating, but had not broken through until just now.
of course...Hagens with the assist.
1-0 USA 3 min left in the 1st.
Bedard
Faber
Hughes
No offense to Faber or Hughes who had very good rookie seasons.
One from Hagens - the other off a nice turnover Hagens forced.
3-0 USA
Finland takes their timeout.
At the halfway point.
Hagens given an assist on the 3rd Stiga goal, so he has 3 pts today.
Hagens is so good.
As I typed Hagens has a PP goal to stretch it to 6-2.
5-point game for Hagens (2G/3A) through 2 periods (34 second left)
6-3 USA.
It's always been a calling card of the Fins - solid fundamental hockey. USA Hockey re-built their development program after the Fins model maybe 10-15 years ago and the success has been evident.
McKenna and Martone 1 point each for Canada (A)
Iginla 1 too (G)
Eiserman and Hutson 1 point each for USA (A) in their game
USA 7-3 - headed to the PP.
6 points for Hagens (3G/3A)
USA had 51 shots on net.
Canada up 8-1 after 2. Martone and McKenna piling up points.
I'd say Hagens and Martone go 1/2 in 2025 at this point and no one is going to challenge McKenna IMO for 2026.
Thinking about trying to nab some of his cards.
Thinking about trying to nab some of his cards.
Hard to say, but he's not going to be far behind if he is far behind.
I think as a 16-year old at U18s, Bedard averaged 2ppg. McKenna is beyond that, just through the group play. It gets harder in the medal round, but he's absolutely "as advertised"
@Hockey_Robinson
·
Apr 28
I don't want to alarm anyone, but James Hagens (2025) is on pace to beat Nikita Kucherov's all-time mark of 21 points in 7 games at the U18 Worlds
McKenna had 5 pts.
After group play (USA A1, Canada B1 - both 4-0-0-0)
Hagens (USA) 16 points (7G/9A)
McKenna (Canada) 14 points (6G/8A)
Martone (Canada) 13 points (4G/9A)
Stiga (USA) 10 points (5G/5A)
Eiserman (USA) 9 points (6G/3A)
Connelly (USA) 9 points (4G/4A)
Hutson (USA) 8 points (2G/6A)
Ziemer (USA) 8 points (1G/7A)
If this is not a USA Canada final it will be an upset.
QF Match ups
USA (A1) vs Switzerland (B4)
Canada (B1) vs Latvia (A4)
Finland (A2) vs Sweden (B3)
Czechia (B2) vs Slovakia (A3)

No Auston Matthews tonight for the Maple Leafs.
Team is saying illness, feels like something more significant to keep a star player out of a potential elimination game.
If you stop moving forward they can blow it dead and consider it a miss. He moves so slow he comes close, but he out waits Varlamov and scores on the PS. Looked like Romanov closed his hand on the puck in the crease.
3-1 CAR.
talk about closing your hand on the puck in the crease. I did that in high school once and back then if the other team missed the penalty shot you went in the box for a penalty. Longest 2 min of my life. Angriest I have seen my coach in 4 years. He threw a water bottle at me before the penalty shot with spit/foam coming out of his mouth along with a stream of expletives that would have made the father in Christmas Story blush.
It was against Fairfield Prep and Ted Drury (Chris' older brother) took the shot. I didn't know the rule and I felt like I was saving a goal, so it was kind of his fault. lol.
TOR - BOS OT
Sorry, forces a game 6
Quote:

Sway-man who?
Come back to Toronto Marchand and be prepared to get your arses kicked in again. The sleeping Giants have awaken…
BOS looked tired and slow.
I think they were smart to tank at the end, they could have lost to TBL. FLA will beat them if they escape TOR.
Hellebuyck no bueno. He’s going to have all offseason to think about this. Maybe he plays in the worlds to get right.
These 2 teams are the best in the West imo.
And if EDM/Skinner is going to put up 1-0 shutouts I'm not sure Vegas is better than them. Goalie and D have always been the EDM weakness in the McDavid era.
I don't think Vegas is an 8-seed, but they're not top 2 in the conference IMO.
USA vs Switzerland at 5:00 tomorrow.
Czechia vs Slovakia at 7:45
Finland vs Sweden at 10:00
Canada vs Latvia at 12:45

Made you the man you are today. lol. Who is that man? Cool story.
Can’t remember which game last night but a d-man came really close to closing hand on a puck in the crease while sweeping it out
22 to 20 in shots shows not much offense which is how the series has gone so far. a lot of hits, a lot of blocked shots.
I expected VAN to win at home.
I think that series has the best chance to go 7, since NSH is at home for game 6.
Same with TOR but I doubt they win game 6.
Two games tonight - one possible handshake game:
DAL vs LVG series tied at 2. 7:30 No home team has won yet.
EDM vs LAK, EDM leads 3-1. 10:00
I don't think anyone is breaking a rule in the NHL by going slow. The rule is only if you stop moving forward or if the puck stops moving (like what Marchand did when he just tapped the puck at center ice by accident).
My shootout move - which works once on any goalie - is speed as a righty (who was supposed to be lefty) I come in from the right side just below the right face off dot I cut across the net front and move the puck to my backhand (like I'm going to go five hole) and as I become even with the goalie I switch to forehand and go short side. Kind of like the Suzuki move, but he floats it to humiliate the goalie, my shot is heavier.
I don't have the hands to go as slow as some guys do.
Kind of like the picture below of Suzuki. In this image what you don't see if he floated that puck over the goalie's left shoulder (right side of the net if you're facing it). In my move I am probably 2 feet to the right of where Suzuki is and more parallel until I open up and I shoot short side while still crossing the net front.
lol, no one cares about my shootout move - it is gold though.
Makar
Hughes
Josi
I really want to pick Josi because I feel like he had to do more with less, but I think Hughes earned it.
Very close IMO.
I know I should be watching more Canucks but they're on so late and I never catch up with recordings
I know I should be watching more Canucks but they're on so late and I never catch up with recordings
Game 4. Makar didn't score last night. but his game 4 goal was ridiculous and way different and far more impressive than my shootout move lol (mostly because there were defenders on the ice and I could only do my "move" in a shootout or on a breakaway or in practice) and he beat Hellebuyck I think over left shoulder or left side at least (facing the net) from the right faceoff circle which I think is really hard to do.
That sequence between Nylander and Marchand was nuts
pj, dunno, but we're either thinking of different goals or different ways to describe the same goal, which wouldn't surprise me at all (:
link - ( New Window )
Otter was shaky in net.
2-2 after 1.
3-2 DAL under 10 left.
DAL wins 3-2 and leads in the series now 3-2.
on the live look it seemed Stephenson’s arm was lifted up by d-man’s stick as he trailed in the slot, thought it could be a PS; replay showed it was not so dire
Oetter was terrific in third period
I really like the energy and intensity from Stankoven. He is a tiny dude but plays much bigger.

This reminds me of when I played club hockey (long ago) for a CUNY School (no varsity hockey) and we were playing a parochial college (St Francis?) and they were kinda dirty players and very foul-mouthed and after we would all be in the locker room changing and they would be putting on their clerical collars. Very weird. 🤣
Back up goalies in the playoffs are the Bruins kryptonite
Same. I wasn't that high on Boston, but Toronto is Toronto.
Especially after tanking at the end to avoid Tampa.
GLG…….with or without the big guy
GLG…….with or without the big guy
lol. I am not connected. My guess is concussion. He left the 3rd period of game 4 with “illness” and then missed the next two games. So I doubt it’s illness but no information otherwise.

Slovakia is not a pushover.
Eiserman ties Caufield atop USNDTP goals all time leader board. Eiserman has one more game.
Unless Sweden pulls off a massive upset we will see the match up everyone wanted. USA vs Canada. Sweden doesn’t have the team this year but I say that every year.
Canada would probably be favored vs USA
Hagens POTG.
Stiga
Hagens
Hutson
Hard to argue. Eiserman could have been selected too

Rick, you have a time zone advantage over me
Packed it in midway through the 2nd and recorded,
you spoiler, you (:
Couldn't help thinking, watching this game, that NYR would be hard pressed to play either team at the speed, heaviness, and physicality they played at last night. Not that either keeper is, I don't think, of Igor's caliber, but they've been solid.
I went to game 5 and was surprised at how fast the game was being played
Last night was just a repeat.
Both goalies were on their game last night.
I love the Rangers but I don’t see us playing at that speed , intensity on forecheck and backcheck and physicality of the game.
I hope we do against the Canes as last series was just a warm up for the beginning of real SC playoff hockey
LGR!!!!
esp. with Ovechkin looking all but checked out
Good on you re. Game 5, where I remarked, from in front of my telly, that I'd never, ever seen Stars' home ice crowd as energized, vocal, pumped and completely all in. You later said the same.
How will you manage it if, on the long odds, it comes down to Stars and Rangers?
USA vs Canada tomorrow at 11
Yes. It’s on NHL Network
Never root against them
This team was arguably the best team in the league at one point this season. Now they are less than a shell of themselves. I don't know how that happens.

But what I’m baffled by is if it somehow wasn’t a penalty - the Toronto player ran Swayman - which you can’t do either
So basically boys will be boys? These refs are a joke.

That was odd and the penalty on Toronto was odd too.
I say yes.
Sadly accurate.
Boston vs Florida will be awesome
LVG @ DAL tomorrow
But also CAR @ NYR.
My pick in that series is NYR in 6
Boston vs Florida will be awesome
Boston will get their arses kicked….I don’t think Swayman will rescue them 4 more games like he did this series. Obviously Boston knew the puck would take that angle off the board like that. Not the way imwanted to see this end. Same old, same old…..oh well, now I can relax and take a 6 month break from hockey….couldnt care less who wins.
I only care who wins because in October I made a prop bet on the Rangers to win the cup
I stand to profit from that so LGR LOL

Welcome aboard!
I'll be secretly rooting for the Bruins over the Panthers because I really do want to see New York vs. Boston in the NBA and NHL
don't crap on me guys, I remember watching Johnny Bower live, never wore a mask until his last season (Rangers were his 1st NHL team (traded AHL intraleague for Emile the Cat)). He was of UKR descent.
Rangers didn't face the Guentzel Canes: their last contest he was just returned from injury and had essentially nil TOI. Rangers have had good run playing Canes away, but each season is different. I think Rempe should play. He giveth and he taketh, but they are a different team with him.
MAB, absolutely, my baffled post. In fact I thought it was not completely crazy to have looked at that for possible PS--it wouldn't have been bec the d-man was even, but the elements were not so far from being there
pj, good handicapping; you know your NHL: how do you maintain a FT job during hockey season you laggard you?
George was impenetrable until the scrum and the puck came loose off his pads; Canadian d-men with a nunmber of giveaways in their own zone and George bailed them out
yessir, shots are 30 - 11
1-0 DAL with under 5 to play in the 1st.
Not much difference between these teams
Bing Bong!!!!
I wish Mark Stone good luck next year on IR.
the downside of the Bruins dodging TBL in round 1 is it means they ceded home ice to FLA. Not sure what kind of home ice the Panthers have, it always seems like the BOS and NY teams travel well to FLA but I hope it doesn't work out that way this year.
DAL vs COL and VAN vs EDM are going to be awesome series I think. For the first time in a long time the West has some interesting teams besides the top team or two (no offense to Vegas they play a very disciplined style of hockey which is effective, but not as entertaining as EDM or COL (or DAL or VAN).
2nd round predictions (already said NYR in 6 but they are all below)
2nd round:
NYR vs CAR (NYR in 6, NYR lead 1-0)
FLA vs BOS (FLA in 7)
DAL vs COL (DAL in 7)
VAN vs EDM (EDM in 6)
With Demko I like VAN more. I called starting Silovs early in that series (once Demko went down), but EDM is just different offensively than NSH.
don't crap on me guys, I remember watching Johnny Bower live, never wore a mask until his last season (Rangers were his 1st NHL team (traded AHL intraleague for Emile the Cat)).
In fact I thought it was not completely crazy to have looked at that for possible PS--it wouldn't have been bec the d-man was even, but the elements were not so far from being there
pj, good handicapping; you know your NHL: how do you maintain a FT job during hockey season you laggard you?
that's funny. I'm wrong more than I'm right.
Gave up trying to get the natty as Michigan? Two heartbreaking losses (to Quinnipiac and BC)
He's awesome. Love his game other than his size, but there are a lot of D that are having a lot of success at or around his size. Devils are loaded on the blue line.
just need a goalie (and health).
AKA this year known as the Macklin Celebrini sweepstakes. Macklin is not in (IMO), Bedard neighborhood, but he's a really good player and won the Hobey Baker as a legit college Freshman. The youngest player to ever win the award. He is still just 17 years old and is sure to be transformation to the team who drafts him. After him in the draft are about 10-12 players who could be in most drafts top 10 and a solid 1st round of candidates.
My pick for MTL (assuming no lottery luck) was Tij Iginla after a trade down, but after his U18 showing I think he could go top 5 and no one would bat an eyelash. Plays a lot like his father. Saw him play a little for the Boston Jr Eagles a couple years ago before he joined the WHL - he got so much better in the past couple years.
Tankathon has the odds for pick #1 at:
SJS 25.5%
CHI 13.5%
ANA 11.5%
CBJ 9.5%
MTL 8.5%
ARI 7.5%
OTT 6.5%
SEA 6.0%
CGY 5.0%
NJD 3.5%
BUF 3.0%
Tanking in hockey is impossible because of the lottery, but man if there was a way to get Gavin McKenna (2026 draft) that should be your plan, lol.

Casey will more than likely play in Utica next year as the Devils have Hamilton, Marino, and Nemec on the right side. I hope that they keep Casey though with Hamilton getting older and Marino coming off a down year.
But if I'm Casey I'd have stayed in college another year before playing in the AHL. I bet these guys get treated like royalty in college especially at a school like Michigan.
AHL teams have a lot of bus travel and players are kind of anonymous and teams are littered with players who may never sniff an NHL roster and try and make a name for themselves the more desperate they get. Someone like Casey who is smaller, would benefit from it to get used to the physical game, but in general I feel like NCAA is probably close enough to AHL.
I believe that makes 19 head coaching changes since the end of last season.
That is a lot of turnover. almost 2/3 of the league has a coach with 1 year or less tenure.
I read one theory that GM's hands are tied because of the cap creeping only slightly higher and the cost of a buyout so coaches take the fall more than previously for player performance.
of course this retirement is not that. Bowness isn't being forced out he's 70 years old, but regardless the theory seems plausible.
I guess he should be the fall guy though when his primary responsibility as assistant coach was the PP. I expected the PP unit to be incredible with Crosby, Malkin, Karlsson, Guentzel, and whoever else. but it was somehow awful.
But their problems ran deeper than the PP. Jarry couldn't stop a beach ball much of the season after being Vezina quality last year. Plus their team is old and no 1st round pick this year and the 6 worst prospect pool.
Bobrovsky saves them, like he did often last series.
Swayman has been so good all playoffs and career to that point.
I read the Bruins may deal Ullmark this off-season.
Swayman is an RFA after the season, Ullmark is a UFA after next ($5M).
Hello, NJD? EDM? Easily worth a 1st to me and Bruins have no 1st in 2024 (or 2nd or 3rd lol). No 2nd or 4th next year. They could use some draft picks.
I would try and keep this tandem together if I were them, but probably a lot of trade value too.
No way. Swayman is 25 and better. I'm with the rumors, I'd trade Ullmark who is good too (I think they both benefit from that D), but Ullmark is also 30 years old.

I think the avalanche were trying to trade for Ullmark at the deadline.
lol, no. I was being sarcastic. BOS basically stole home ice. I do expect a close series, I predicted FLA in 7.
Basically this addresses the "rest vs rust" question. I think the FLA offense was sharp, but not to blame him because his defense is ass but Bobrovsky was not and Swayman was. so maybe goalies benefit from regular play and even if a series goes 7, but the players can use the rest?
I know it's just one series and by series 4 maybe it adds up, but I doubt it. As long as they're healthy I think these guys can handle a game every two days (at most) for at most 2 months.

Yeah I think the Devils would look at dealing #10 for him or Saros. Both guys are in the same contract situation. Heading into their walk years with their teams having younger #1's or potential starters. Nashville could decide to keep Askarov in the AHL another year. Will be interesting to see.

Lol the NHL PR dept hits another HR. You have one stand alone 8pm game last night but no don't do the lottery then do it tonight at 6:30. You can't make this shit up.
At least the NBA does it beforehand and just shows the results at 8:30 on a Sunday.
The NHL with regards to media/PR constantly steps on rakes.

Rather than the rest factor, putting away a team quickly lessens the opportunity for injuries. Maybe that's the more significant factor?
Also, it would seem to me that it shouldn't take more than a couple of shifts for a skater, and a few shots against for a goalie to get back in the flow after a break, but what do I know...

I was thinking about this too last night. Can you really afford to keep two "#1's" on the same team? That's a lot of potential value riding the bench each night. I'm obviously "Rangers centric", but they were somewhat similar with the Hank and Talbot situation for a bit.
And just my opinion, but I do think though reflexes, rust, sharpness are real and not a simple sometimes as a shift or a few shots to get back up to speed for everyone. Just like some players may be fatigued. Though I think fatigue is less for these guys than rust.

Yeah just saw that. Its pretty much the way I laid it out last night. The Devils are waiting for the Leafs domino to fall. I think Berube's first choice is Toronto, 2nd Devils (I don't blame him). If Berube goes there then the Devils wait and see if the Dubas/Keefe connection changes the situation in Pitt. if not they very possibly pivot to Mcllelan.
He's not from Toronto and I view the Devils as good or better opportunity than the Leafs.
Toronto has Marner and Tavares entering their final years. A D group that is not deep and loaded with UFAs like Muzzin, Brodie, Klingberg, Edmundson, Giordano and Lyubushkin.
In addition Domi and Bertuzzi are UFAs.
And they don't have a good prospect pool.
Plus their goalie situation is almost as much a debacle as NJD unless Woll proves to be a #1 (which is possible).
IMO NJD just need a goalie (and health of course)

sorokin (8 year extension kicks in next season)
You don't see goalies traded for position players often and not the caliber of Marner (even his rights) at least not often in the past decade.
Mostly it's picks for goalies or other goalies.
That said, I'm not sure after last season Sorokin has the value needed to pull that off. I think they like Woll.
I don't even think Saros or Ullmark would get the rights to Marner (conditional on him signing).

I think Kucherov wins.

i tend to agree but its crazy to me how many on twitter (nyi fans and otherwise) seem repulsed at the idea of any trade for marner. i can only imagine what it's like in toronto now.
obviously that doesnt dictate bad trades but big trades are always complex and marners situation sucks for them bc he's at his low point value wise and in terms of contract status. eichel probably the most recent comp but he was under contract.
I think Kucherov wins.
Kucherov has 7 less goals and is only +8 compared to MacKinnon +35.
Before this year he was just about a PPG player in the playoffs.
I'd trade for Marner in a heartbeat and I hope TOR trades him, but I doubt they do.
Actually best case for me as a Habs fan is they don't trade him, he rides out this year and plays well, TOR misses the playoffs and then they lose him in FA for nothing and to compensate for it they extend Tavares for 8 years.

MacKinnon had an awesome year. if he wins I have zero issues.
But, I think Kucherov gets it because he is the 5th player in NHL history to record 100 assists in a season, and led the league in points. Also when compared with MacKinnon, Kucherov took 100 fewer shots, and had a higher shooting %.
Plus minus should have very little bearing on Hart IMO, because it's not indicative necessarily of personal performance. Too many variables can cause a minus or reward you with a plus where you had very little to do with the play.
Lastly, I think MacKinnon had better line mates/teammates. The Avs led the NHL in GF.
Anyway, it's close. Probably the closest Hart battle in recent memory.
I'd vote for McDavid if I had a vote - I wouldn't be surprised with or argue if any of the 3 won, but I think Kucherov gets it.
Surprising to me, and means Canada is probably loaded, but either way, should be cool.
Though this will now be 3 years in a row with a top 5 pick for MTL. Have to get better at some point.
Not a lot of youth, not a lot of talent - in any spot.
Obviously MTL has issues - I just mentioned they picked top 5 3 years in a row now, but I don't know what they're going to do with all these D. They don't have a Luke Hughes talent unless Hutson pans out, but they have a ton of "playable" NHL D.
24 or younger D in MTL:
Jordan Harris 23
Arber Xhekaj 23
Kaiden Guhle 22
Justin Barron 22
Jayden Struble 22
Logan Mailloux 21
Adam Engstrom 20
Lane Hutson 20
David Reinbacher 19
All of them except Reinbacher (2023 1st round pick) played for MTL in 2023
with 2 1st period goals.
Suter and Wyatt Johnson.
2-0 DAL 8 min left in the 1st.
3-2 with goals from Nichushkin and Makar.
Nichushkin is very underrated by some people.
What a demoralizing loss for Dallas. Georgie played outstanding after letting 3 GA in the first (none of which were really on him)
3-2 with goals from Nichushkin and Makar.
Nichushkin is very underrated by some people.
He plays the powerplay and pk, easily one of the most important players for the Avs.
The tying goal only happens because Makar is superhuman. Eats that Pavelski check without even a bobble, spin off into dangerous ice no problem and set up a high danger chance. His edgework is off the charts.

He (Makar) reminds me of McDavid but playing D.

Seems like the 4 names mentioned have been Berube, Todd McLellan, Possibly Sullivan if he shakes loose from the Pens and a name I heard yesterday they have interest in is Jay Woodcroft. Honestly I like all 4. I guess a slight preference would be Sullivan, however I think all have been in the type of situation they'd have in Jersey and have shown the ability to do well with it. the interesting debate is to whether to keep the #10 pick or trade it. I think if we are talking Ullmark or Saros it probably goes. On the other hand a lot of their prospects have graduated and they've slipped to 23 in the prospect rankings so it would be nice to replenish the system with a potential cheap option at 3rd C or top 6 wing.

I'm just hoping that Hughes overpowers Gorton's tendency to sign the big FA. It's not what MTL needs. I think like you do (trade makes sense) and I wish MTL got involved in the Gauthier trade. He'd be perfect for MTL, but if the rumors are true and Trevor Zegras is being shopped because ANA has "too many good forwards" lol (seriously never heard a team executive ever say that) then I think we have a match.
Would love Zegras.
Plus can Kirby Dach ever stay healthy? If he can, MTL has their 2C already on the roster.
They need to shed the surplus contracts. Basically just Dvorak and Josh Anderson. I don't think they'll be able to trade Gally (and he played really well down the stretch like Armia - they are awesome bottom of the roster guys even they are paid like top of the roster guys)

In order of preference I want Sullivan then Berube. Thank you to Ottawa for hiring Travis Green so at least we don't have to worry about him being the HC next season. Apparently Berube turned down the Ottawa job because he has another opportunity. I am hoping it's the Devils especially if Sullivan is not going to be available.
I read Bergevin is possible to replace Rob Blake as Kings GM. As far I know, Blake hasn't been let go (yet).
Really good player.
Not on the Bedard, Matthews or Hughes level IMO from a skill standpoint.
He's a C though, so he will almost automatically rank ahead of #1 overall pick like Lafreniere and Slafkovsky who are strictly wings. And the D's like Power and Dahlin.
I think he will become a 1C for the Sharks (assuming the keep the pick and I have heard no indication otherwise), and could be a 60-70 point scorer before he's 20-21 IMO.
I don't think he has elite offensive upside like a Hughes or Bedard, but he should be solid offensively and defensively from the start. Maybe a slightly better Hischier.

Yeah jay Sullivan has been my #1 one thing though if you look at his record outside the cup years its nothing special(I know Mrs Lincoln besides that one thing how was the rest of the play)same with Berube. like I've said honestly all candidates mentioned appeal to me. They are all big upgrades over what we had. Interesting thing though If I'm not mistaken twith all the openings the only 2 teams that have gone outside their orginization were Ruff and Green the 2 Devils coaches this past year lol.
Otherwise I think Sully is staying (for now).
They let Rierden go in PIT and I think he's the fall guy.

Yeah I think the only way Sully leaves is if Dubas wants to bring in Keefe. The thing about the Rierden thing is I've heard multiple things , like you said he's the fall guy, but also he was close to Sully and that this leads more credence to a rift between him and Dubas. I tend to think you're right. my prediction still stands. Berube to Toronto and either McLellan or Woodcroft to NJ
The Pens power play with Crosby, Malkin, Karlsson, Rust, and Guentzel was 15% and 3rd worst in the NHL. Only CBJ and PHI were worse. I expected it to be league best or top 5 at least.
I am going to guess that's the worst PP for PIT in a decade or more.
Didn't even see this. His father is a Dr. on the staff of the Golden State Warriors, he probably is thrilled.
Celebrini played youth for the Jr. Sharks for a few years before going to Shattuck St. Mary's in MN.

I wonder if NYR/CAR get an extra day at some point. they are 2 games ahead of one of the West semis.
Panthers score with 1.5 seconds left in the 2nd to go up 3-1 after 2.
Marchand put a wallop on Tkachuk in the 1st.
4-1

No. I hate him.
But...I have grown to respect his game. And it makes it worse why he plays like douche bag.
Man, Tkachuk just wrecked Pasta
I give Pasta credit for taking that fight.
wtf? Trapezoid? Is it a safety thing for keepers?
No way I would give up #10 for him. He's a good coach but there are other good ones out there.

That's been my reaction to the Keefe-to-Pittsburgh rumors too.
MacKinnon flung the puck from his own end over the glass behind Oettinger. Delay of game.
Hintz with a sick pass to Heiskanen on the ensuing PP, DAL up 1-0. But 1 goal leads are nothing for this Avs team.
Now up 4-0, let's see if this lead holds.
Oettinger on his game!!!!
I think it was Tuesday night and not last night that broadcast crew said Heiskanen has been averaging around 24 minutes TOI. If true, just crazy. Sometimes I think KK would have been more natural fit as a d-man
They don’t trust Lundquist who has committed some terrible turnovers.
Although last night he made a terrific assist.
This series could go 7 games
Stars need for Oettinger to stand on his head during these playoffs.
I love the 4 lines the Stars skate out there every game.
Stankoven is going to be a stud for a little dude. Love his game.
Benn is playing some of the best all around hockey of his career
Having said all that I love my Rangers.
USA losing to Sweden (on now) down 3-1 after 2.
Sweden goals by Joel Erikkson Ek (very underrated player), Marcus Johannson and Lucas Raymond.
USA goal from Zack Werenski
this is the first group play game for both teams.
Germany beat Slovakia 6-4 (two assists for Slafkovsky)
Norway beat Switzerland 5-2
VAN vs EDM @ 10:00 VAN leads 1-0
Bennett may be back for FLA.
Draisaitl questionable for EDM (GTD).
Johnny Gaudreau - no bueno. Not sure what happened to him. turns the puck over on the 6 on 4 PP with the EN.
Going to take more that to compete. Lucky to be down only 1.
And they score twice 3-0.
Another Fla goal and Boston tries to change the narrative again, things get feisty?

When I bet NYR to win the cup in OCT they were +1500 (and I believe 9th in the league).
BOS had 16 shots on net so I don't put this game on Swayman, but for a spark having Ullmark could help and even if you think Swayman was fine, the last two games he definitely dominate like vs TOR and in game 1 of this series.

I'm torn on this. The rest if the team hasn't done sway any favors the last 2 games and Linus did play well against FLA in the regular season.
However I can see ullmark letting in goals like a sieve
they don't need to win in BOS again. Not that it matters that much, but I think all things being equal players prefer home ice.

2 Connor Bedard goals so far for Canada.
Pierre Luc-Dubois finally got a point - it only took playing a team from the UK. What a horrible trade (Vilardi, Iafallo, Kupari plus a pick)/signing (8x8.5M) that looks like for LAK.
So glad he didn't wind up in MTL (in retrospect - at the time I was all in favor of it, lol).
USA plays Germany at 2:20 PM ET. Germany beat Slokavia 6-4, they are not a pushover.
Czechia beat the Fins yesterday 1-0 in a shootout. Lukas Dostal was great in net.
I never like to criticize D for own goals god knows I've been "guilty" of my fair share, but that went in off Cole's stick blade. The way he was positioned it was really the most likely outcome if it got through.
I get it if your tied up with a forward and not looking at the shot and it hits your skate or part of your body or even other part of your stick, but that one I think Cole could and should have positioned his stick differently. If you watch that play Cole was almost exactly how a forward should be positioned who is trying to deflect it into the net. And he wasn't really covering Hyman. If that puck did get through Hyman easily scores into an empty net.
Still give credit to Bouchard for putting the puck on net - coaches preach about that. Good things can happen when you get pucks on net.
He made some really impressive saves getting down
Come out of the gate hot for once. Less penalties.
Horrific

We're in wrestling territory.

Terrible, didn't bring it up because it happened to Marchand and figured it wouldn't get sympathy here.

Whenever you think the Dept of Player Safety has taken it to the highest possible level of absurdity, they break new ground.

The refs are treating Rempe like this is Minority Report, meanwhile you have an actual repeat offender being rewarded.
Dwight King smiles knowingly.
Yeah that's inexplicable. Clear interference. Florida has had the much better of the play though

Too soon. :(
How does this make any sense?
How does this make any sense?
The only thing that makes sense to me is what happens in Vegas had influence on that.

We've been bitching about it for years, the lack of consistency is nauseating. It's just ridiculous.
They took one away from Boeser so the natural trick and the trick altogether, for now, are gone
Canada is 2-0
USA 1-1
Sweden 2-0
Finland 1-0-0-1
Swiss 2-0
Latvia 0-0-2-0
Slovakia 1-0-0-1
There is no one in group B who doesn't have at least one point. In group A Norway, Great Britain and Austria have been blanked so far).
USA plays Slovakia at 10:20 on NHLN I believe.
Connor Bedard, Roman Josi and Kaspars Daugavins (Latvia) atop the scoring list with 5 points each.

I guess each team's stars are the primary targets. Shameful
FLA D is no bueno besides Forsling. NYR would win that series in 6.

Sticking with my Dallas vs Florida in the finals. The best two teams I watched this year though the Rangers are very impressive as well.

No no. Apparently one of these incidents will have a hearing.
Go head, guess which one. - ( New Window )
No wonder I don't take this shit seriously anymore.
Brady Tkahuck with a great individual effort on the 3rd goal.
USA lucky to salvage a point.

and Luke Hughes with an end to end rush for the 4th goal.

4-1 to Slovakia, came back with 3 in the 3rd to tie it up with 3:22 left.

For USA obviously the Slovak POTG is the real POTG.

Man, I hope you're right. But that team is scary.
And the end of the game in EDM should get Soucy 2 games IMO. 1 playoff game generally = 5 regular season games.
You have a team with Evander Kane, Corey Perry, Vincent Desharnais and even Cody Ceci and your star player gets hit like that, those are the guys I'm taking it out on if I'm the coach.

Nemec with a goal and the primary assist on the GWG for the Slovaks. Of course my dream was the 2 of them doing them in May games for the Devils but alas here we are...
@PierreVLeBrun
Jared Bednar says Jonathan Drouin is a game time decision for tonight. He’s a possibility.

To no one's surprise, the game-ending scrum and multiple crosschecks results in one suspension, Soucy for one game.
Hyman, McDavid receive nothing - ( New Window )
Big loss. Bigger if Drouin can't go.

Nichushkin is out due to being suspended (6 months) for a relapse - he's in the substance abuse stage 3.

Details of the substance abuse program for those interested.
Hope he gets help.
Johnston is going to be good for a long time. He's 20, turns 21 tomorrow.
Av's have 2 shots on net halfway through the period.
Watching this series and seeing novel events like Seguin winning wall battles and Duchene selling out blocking shots. Stars have buy in.
Hintz injured by a cross check. will be a big loss if he has to miss time.

I agree and they're so deep. they are like Florida with their forward depth. Seguin and Duchene are on the 3rd line. I know both of those guys are past their prime, but that's some talent on the 3rd line that can provide secondary scoring. That's huge in the playoffs.
I do think they are short on blue line depth though and their 3rd pair is not strong.
3-1 DAL. 7:25 left in the 2nd.
Roll 4 lines baby!!!!
EDM vs VAN @ 9:30. VAN leads 2-1. No Soucy tonight for VAN due to suspension for the McDavid cross check. Ex-Hab Noah Juulsen activated in Soucy's spot. Always liked Juulsen - was injured early and his career stagnated. Good to see him still hanging on in the league.
Had Austria pulled off the upset it would have been the largest comeback in tournament history.
Kaiden Guhle (MTL) POTG for Canada.
Plays incredible (as did Bobrovsky), Bruins force a game 6 at home.
He did, FLA D is so bad. So many odd-man rushes.
Good game to watch.

Seems like the Bruins can't match FLA's speed though. It's like they're always a step behind getting to the puck.
Also what's with all the too many men on the ice penalties? They got their 6th of the post-season tonight.

I just figured it was players playing with people they're not used to. at least tonight.
Just one game tonight, possible handshakes at home - which have not been kind to teams looking to close out series.
DAL vs COL @ 8:00
See if COL can rebound after the devastating news on Nichushkin and maybe get Toews back and make a series out of it.
USA needs to win out and pass Latvia to avoid Canada in the QF's. top 4 in each group make it, right now USA is 4th.

I thought EDM was cooked once VAN tied it up. I wonder what the record of teams tying a game up in the final minute is?

I thought they were cooked when they decided on Pickard in net.
Big loss. Evens out Nichushkin IMO.
Robo on the forecheck beats 3 Avs and Pavelski bangs it home.
1-0 Stars.
1-1 after 1
Stars are a balanced team.
I hope this series somehow goes 7. But DAL is definitely the better team and should close it out tonight.
On the heels of their OT loss to Canada.
Austria making some noise.
So huge in the playoffs to get secondary scoring.
