Welcome to the most exciting event in sports and the hardest trophy to win. The NHL Stanley Cup playoffs. I am sure NYR fans and NYI fans probably have game threads, but this thread for all hockey discussion. Including the playoffs, the U18s, World Championships, awards, predictions and draft lottery. Playoffs start Saturday with all series beginning either Saturday, Sunday or Monday. Most series are every other day with an occasional 2nd day for travel or other reasons. Schedule in link.
The playoff match ups are finally set with LAK win (and LVG loss).
Here they are:
East
NYR* (1M) vs WAS (WC2) (Starts Sunday)
CAR (2M) vs NYI (3M) (Starts Saturday)
FLA (1A) vs TBL (WC1) (Starts Sunday)
BOS (2A) vs TOR (3A) (Starts Saturday)
West
DAL (1C) vs LVG (WC2) (Starts Monday)
WIN (2C) vs COL (3C) (Starts Sunday)
VAN (1P) vs NSH (WC1) (Starts Sunday)

* President's Trophy Winner
My Predictions:
NYR in 5
CAR in 6
FLA in 6
BOS in 7
DAL in 6
COL in 7
VAN in 5

In game 7 he wasn't as noticeable as usual with no points and just one shot on net and they won.
Add to that Draisaitl had just one point (an assist) last night it has to help their confidence.
other than that, I don't have much, this should be a lopsided series, but that's why they play the games.
I saw him play for the New Haven Nighthawks while he was part of the NYR organization.
Eastern one should be good too. I obviously don't like NYR, but it's hard not to admire the way they are playing as a neutral fan. FLA is really going to test them, but I think Rangers blueline is good enough (at least compared to FLAs) to give them a real chance at the upset.
I have been amazed at how well Jamie Benn has played for Stars this season.
Tanev addition at trade deadline was a huge addition to blue line.
You're an odd duck. You say you're a Rangers fan yet you are *relentlessly* negative about them, while you never do anything but fawn all over the Stars.

Stars are a deeper team all around and so much better in goal than Oilers .

Chris Kreider scores a hat trick game 6.
"Yeah, but he was invisible the first and second period."
Easy as that!!!! Just like most Rangers fans on the game day threads.

Ya sure about that? Lol.
USA goals from Caufield, Tkachuk, and Werenski. 3 points for Caufield so far.
Again, with a win USA clinches 2nd place in Group B.
In Group A, Canada and Czechia scoreless. A regulation win for Czechia gives Czechia the 1 seed, anything else Canada gets it. Czechia could wind up as low as 3.
I didn't realize he joined the tourney. Nedeljcovik has been goalie (as well as Trey Augustine).
I think they had 1 shot on net. No idea what they were doing. they seemed confused. I guess these teams get jammed together and don't practice 5 on 3 PPs too often.
USA scores early 3rd too, to go up 4-1 on Latvia - Matt Boldy - who has been awesome (I think leads tourney on scoring).
USA up 5-3 with 11 left.
Kevin Hayes getting physical, what?
Latvia to the PP.
3-3 and it goes to OT, but that minimum 1 point is enough to give Canada the 1 seed. Depending how it ends Czechia the 2. Which would be good for USA since Czechia is a different team since adding Pasta, Zacha, Necas, etc and if Czechia is the 3 seed they'd play USA assuming USA wraps up the 2.
Rick, don't let these gaslighters and shit stirrers get to you. When things go sour in a period, in a game for the Rangers, the red lights sky is falling brigade come out in force, the usual suspects, who declare their favorite piece of shit players need to be moved, traded, benched, and hung in effigy...and at times these two clowns, both of whom I actually like, are among them, but I can deal because they actually know the game...for the most part LOL (:>
The difference between some of the the knee jerk take out the pistol and shoot them and you is that you give your observations as to what is going wrong and why. I'm often right there with you, a step ahead or behind. I'm sure others' perspectives may differ. Since 2022, I've critiqued CK (and Zib) loud and often for their disappearing acts in SCP. It's a good thing I wasn't around last week because I may not have been able to hold my tongue through periods 1 and 2 Thursday night (still haven't seen it) and would likely have eaten major crow. But Thursday is not the end of it, it only marked a new beginning. I will almost guarantee that the team's bi-polar ability is alive and well. Every team has its periods of poor play and wtf moments, it just seems like the Rangers' are uglier than most. Valiquette doesn't spare them (or the 'less than 100%' of particular players), he speaks in code. You're in good company.
But....Matthew Tkachuk is one of my favorite players in the league. As is Sasha Barkov. I know already Rangers fans will have stupid takes about both players (Tkachuk more than Barkov, but about both) and I know my instinct will be to reply to the comments, but it is futile to try and argue with a mob, so I'll see how much restraint i have. lol or I may just avoid the game threads to not distract from the fun Rangers fans will have. 4 wins away from the SCF the fans don't need me busting up their fun.

I actually love watching the Panthers and it's sad to me that I'm going to have to hate them forever now.

I'd like to somehow see if the Habs can get Iginla but if Demidov falls it sounds like a real opportunity.
I have not seen him much other than U18's as a 16-year old before Russia was banned from INTL competition.

Nothing would surprise me in this tournament Andy.
Last year USA was undefeated in group play IIRC (not perfect like Sweden is this year - last year USA got 20 out of a possible 21 points b/c they beat Sweden in OT) and then went on to lose to Germany in the SFs and Latvia in the bronze medal game.
USA is deep, deeper than Czechia, but Czechia probably has the best player with Pastrnak. Should be a fun game to watch.

Good scoop. Sheldon Keefe is in fact the new head coach of the Devils.[quote]
Crosby is entering the final year of his deal coming off a great season.
Or...they both leave after the season.
@mikemorrealeNHL
Rick Tocchet is the 2023-24 recipient of the Jack Adams Award as “the NHL coach adjudged to have contributed the most to his team’s success,” as selected by the NHL Broadcasters’ Association.
Yeah I'm fine with Keefe. Devils definitely did their due diligence here, interviewed 3 or 4 guys. Obviously they key will be getting a goalie and maybe some size either up front or on the back end.
two more QF games today...
USA vs Czechia @ 2:20 (in Prague lol)
Sweden vs Finland @ 2:20
both venues are in Czechia, so it really doesn't matter Prague or Ostrava I guess.
scoreless with under 5 left in the 1st.
Pasta missed a breakaway
Good game.
Finland penalty was by Konsta Helenius (2024 draft eligible) who has the rare triple of U18, U20 and Worlds in the same year.
I really hope and Matthew both play for USA in the Olympics.
No one will match the talent for talent with Canada, but I really like the team USA can put together if all their players play. And I still would like to see a Tkachuk/Hughes line.
