The offseason special teams overhaul

Blue Dog : 4/20/2024 7:24 pm
I was looking at who they brought back, plus who they signed, plus 6 more draft picks to try and get to 53 and they will have to get rid of some of the new guys. They brought in a ton of special teams player so, although not exciting, there will probably be a few good camp battles as the new coaches try to fix the group.

Starting with the framework of the unit: The three more commonly known positions obviously still look the same (Gano, Kreiter, Gillan). The new coordinator, Michael Ghobrial, was one of two Jets assistant coordinators the last few years and they've consistently had one of the top units. The other big name was Cam Acchord who is the new assistant coordinator. He was the Patriots ST coordinator to replace Joe Judge but let go when Mayo came in and cleaned house.

They brought back last year's gunners (Holmes and McCloud), but then added Miles Boykin whose size could be beneficial on the new kickoffs. McCloud is getting $3M and the others are minimums with small guaranteed money so it could mean a roster spot who they choose. Bryce Ford-Wheaton I believe has some experience with this too.

Matthew Adams was the ST ace added in Cam Brown's place who is supposed to be very good. Almost all of Adams' deal is guaranteed (even though it is just a minimum deal) so they definitely were doing what they had to to get him to come in. Carter Coughlin who was brought back figures to have the same role he's had his whole career.

I doubt they keep both Isaiah McKenzie and Gunner Olszewski who saved the punt return game last year and got brought back. That'll be a dual. McKenzie doesn't have any guaranteed money but he's more experienced at kicks in addition to punts and they just put in that new return rule. He also is a minor factor on offense. Gunner did return kicks in New England though when he was all-pro and the new assistant ST coordinator was his ST coordinator there, so I'm sure they'll have him back there in camp. Gary Brightwell also adds a wrinkle now that he's back from injury because he's been used on a bunch of different units and also returns kicks.

Last you have the two blocking TEs, Jack Stoll the former Eagle and Chris Manhertz the seasoned vet. Both play a lot of ST too. Stoll is much younger and has some guarantees. They could keep both, but they presumably have the same role on the roster. I'm just glad this means they don't have to use Bellinger as the personal protector anymore. A blocker who is 6 years younger and probably got to learn a fair bit from Stoutland probably has the edge.

Really a new look unit then the one that entered camp last year, that is a lot of names to bring in and compete for the new coach. I'm glad they are taking fixing the group seriously.

on a non-sexy topic. Hopefully there is serious focus on fixing this unit in 2024.

agreed good post. i think julian love had led the 2022 team in ST snaps, so that was another area where he left a hole that didnt get refilled well.

i think we see a pretty offensive day 1/2, and then a bunch of defense/ST types day 3.

Nice post. Can’t get much worse than some of the previous units. Hopefully a big change this year.
