Beacher Report’s Analyst Derrik Klassen was on the Giants Huddle podcast with John Schmeelk. I found his QB takes to be quite compelling.
He shared his thoughts about prospects at the offensive positions. In the first half of the podcast Klassen ranked the QBs. He has Maye over both Williams and Daniels. And Penix as his 7th QB after Rattler.
Klassen grouped the QBs into three tiers:
Tier One
“I am very much “all-in” on either one these guys. Either one I would take #1 overall and not even think twice about it.”
1a. Maye
1b. Williams
Tier Two
“I see these QBs (Tier 2) as back end of the first, early second. QBs you can win games with… I just think these are the types of guys that have (in JJ’s case) a longer development curve or (in JD’s case) he’ll need a pretty specific set of circumstances in his offense to make it work” (much like Hurts does with Philly).
3. McCarthy
4. Daniels
Tier Three
“These are the QBs who have maybe a 5% chance to be something.”
5. Nix
6. Rattler
7. Penix
Klassen - (
New Window )
Williams- “I think he’s as good as everyone else thinks he is.” (He wasn’t discussed much as Caleb is going to the Bears.)
Daniels-“The mobility alone is going to make him more valuable right out of the gate, because he’ll have something to lean on when things go wrong.” “When he does make throws he’s pretty accurate.” “Downfield work (passing) is incredible. When he chooses throw in the intermediate area it’s good.” “As a decision maker he can be a little late. Things take a little longer than you’d like, but he’s not going to put the ball in harm’s way.”
“Where I have questions with JD is the middle of the field… he struggles to anticipate when windows are open, especially against zone coverage… That sounds like a nit-picky thing, but that’s what the NFL is.” “You’ve got to have the ability, willingness, aggression and the blind faith to do that and in 5 years I haven’t seen it with Daniels.” “He also struggles to keep his eyes up and manage the pocket… and when he does leave the pocket he’s thinking run first unlike Mahomes, Allen, and even Jackson who would all be looking to pass first.” “Daniels is more like Fields and Hurts… when they’re out of the pocket they’re thinking run first.”
Rattler- “There’s a 95% chance he just booms out of the league. He’s probably too aggressive. He’s not as athletic as he thinks he is.” “But there’s that 5% chance he can hone it in and he kinda has ST arm talent and managing the pocket.”
Penix- “His response to pressure is to either throw it away or throw it up for Odunze… In the NFL you’re going to have to have a lot more.” “He doesn’t have answers to get outside the pocket. His scramble rate was around 1%. In the NFL that’s not going to fly. In 1980 maybe. Today there’s no shot.” “His adjusted accuracy rate is also worse than all the other QBs except for Rattler.” “That’s not great given all the offensive talent he had, plus superior coaching.” “He had everything you could want and he still was not an accurate passer.” “In the 1-10 yard area, he just doesn’t have that timing that rhythm that flexibility to throw it very well and that’s a big hinderance.” “He struggles with touch.”
As I mentioned elsewhere, put Maye on Washington and Penix on North Carolina and I think Washington has the same or better success and Maye might be the #1 guy and North Carolina struggles mightily and Penix isn't even in the top 8/10 QB's for the draft..
He's awesome! His mechanics and footwork suck and someone will need to fix all of that, but that's easy!

I think the perception of Maye is inflated in part because of Josh Allen. That's a dangerous game. Maye could just as easily be Blake Bortles.

Maye has better natural talent than Bortles and Bortles had issues playing at NFL speed. You look at the only times Bortles had success and it was similar to Daniel Jones in that they cut down the number of reads, moved him around, etc. Someone like Allen and Maye are making the correct reads, but both of them coming out were really sloppy with mechanics.
An INSANELY good at football quarterback doesn't have the season Maye had. He has undeniable gifts but the complete package, at this point, is lacking quite a bit. I'm OK with gambling on him but I also recognize that there's a fairly good chances he's a bust.

+1. There is projection and then there's reality. Sy's comments about Tarzan/Jane ring true. When you watch him the ceiling is there but the floor is low. There are plenty of times when he looked erratic, chaotic undrew pressure, slow to process and inaccurate -- against ACC competition.
2. Anthony Richardson
3. Bryce Young
4. Will Levis

I have these worries too. We have Daniel Jones because in some ways it reminded the Giants of Eli and he had the same coach.
Very rarely is someone the next star player. Each next star, like Mahomes usually does something that is unique.
I don’t want the just Josh Allen. Maybe Maye is the next unique all pro then sign me up for that. When I hear Williams is the next Mahomes I think that it probably won’t end well.
