has a decent year and shows progress the clamoring will be to extend him. Make him prove it for 2 years. It's cheaper and they can let him walk if he doesn't.

to pick up his option costs $25M. Not exactly chump change for a guy that isnt starting the season as QB1.
Does anyone think he realistically could be a franchise QB?
and bring a team to the superbowl? I for sure don't. I could be wrong, but I think he is far off. Unless he got in a situation like Kap and Harbough, I just don't see it. He can't throw consistently. $25M is insane for a backup especially for a guy who's potential you need to see playout and he will be a backup this year.
RE: thats a mistake. the Giants just did that fuck up with Jones.. now if

He may not even play, how’s this a mistake? If Russ gets hurt and Fields comes in and lights it up you just tag him. It’s more money but the risk of lighting your $25m on fire is far greater.

Fields was traded for a 6th round pick and people still feel he will be this franchise QB. LOL.

Exactly. He is there for a full eval. Wilson will start and Fields will be auditioning for a job in 2025. And it will be at a reduced rate.

Yeah I don't understand why they would even consider picking up an option to pay their backup QB $25M. If Fields walks you can go find another Fields cheaper.
The Giants dilemma was trying to tie Barkley and Jones together.
If they had tagged Jones and gave Barkley something near what he was looking for, they wouldn’t have been in this mess, although the Giants still would be looking for a QB this year.

Yup. Something like this could happen - Wilson gets hurt. Fields leads them to a playoff win and gets a 40+ million dollar contract... But then again, maybe that is from another team?
The problem is, it's guaranteed money and Steelers are hoping Wilson is their long term QB.
Last losing season was 20 years ago. They've had 3 losing seasons in the last 33 years.
This is the Tampa strategy. Two qb's under cheap one year deals, they aren't tied to either guy and if one works out, then they have the ability to sign a reasonable longer term deal. If it doesn't work out, they are able to move on.
It's a reasonable strategy for a team that is almost never in the position to draft a top qb and doesn't seem to need a "franchise quarterback" whatever that is, to be relevant.
