Is it legal to put contingencies

bhill410 : 4/25/2024 2:39 pm
On picks? For instance I would feel way better about trading next years pick if it was top 5 protected like NBA teams do, but I do not recall ever seeing that happen. Teams have player performance contingencies on the round (x amount of snaps it’s a 2nd v 3rd), but I don’t think it’s ever happened based upon on what position the pick is. Is it not allowed or is it just never been agreed to?
Why would Team B agree to that?

I'm losing out on a Top 10 pick if it falls there and what do I get in its place? A future 1 unprotected?
I mean for a number of reasons

And you can structure it however you want. It’s odd that pick protections are so common in NBA but unheard of in NFL.

I assume you can. This the exact protection you're describing, but when SF traded Alex Smith to KC, the trade included KC's third round pick if they had fewer than 8 wins or their 2nd round pick if they had 8 wins or more. So it wasn't directly tied to their draft position, but obviously their win total impacts the draft position. I don't see why you couldn't make the condition explicitly draft position, but I don't know for sure.
Obviously would be a reassuring

Caveat to have a 2025 pick top 5 protected given the reports coming out in last hour.
