has gone by the board with the selection of Malik Nabers. And we should all feel pretty good about that.
The narrative was thus: Schoen & Daboll were going to give themselves more runway with John Mara -- ensuring their jobs for a few more years -- by selecting THEIR OWN QB who would need some time to develop. Of course, such an ulterior motive raised the specter of their own selfish employment goals versus the long-term goals of the franchise.
Well, we don't have to worry about that anymore. By drafting Malik Nabers, Joe Schoen & Brian Daboll did what they thought was best for the Giants by selecting the best player on their Board at #6.
In the end, it's fair game to debate whether or not the Giants should have taken J.J. McCarthy (or some other QB.) But there is no real debate about the talent of Malik Nabers. The Giants had no playmakers on their offense that kept defensive coordinators awake at night. Now they have one who will nicely complement Wan'Dale Robinson, Jalin Hyatt and Darius Slayton. And BTW, Malik Nabers was the #1 graded prospect on NFL.com's Big Board; #3 The Athletic; #3 Sy'56; #4 GBN Draft Report; #5 Tony Pauline.
It's also fair game to debate whether or not Joe Schoen and Brian Daboll are really up to the task of creating a winning culture / team. But in the end, there should be no debate about their motives.
Winning gets you more time
Drafting a QB usually means sitting a bit and losing early.
Drafting a WR over a QB certainly gives them a better chance to win more games this season.
Kentucky, Tennessee, Auburn, LSU.
🧐
Nabers is an outstanding player, no question. There is no doubt that he deserved to be picked where he was and that he will contribute. But this was not a “profiles in courage” moment where they bucked management and their futures for the good of the team. This move was likely the one most guaranteed to keep them employed.
Believing in Daniel Jones is the company line.

So, in essence, you are saying the exact opposite -- that Joe Schoen and Brian Daboll were motivated to stay with Daniel Jones to ensure their jobs.
I don't buy it.
As for "Profiles in Courage," I'm not aware of ANY General Manager or Head Coach who would willingly defy the wishes of the guy who employs them. That doesn't happen in real life, unless they are looking to be fired right away.
As for believing in Daniel Jones, neither you nor I know what the "company line" really is, assuming there is one at all. But it is not a stretch to imagine that Daniel Jones career with the Giants could be over within a year.
It's Jones' job. It is not an open spot where the best player will play.
I liked JJ McCarthy a lot. Apparently, the Giants felt passing on Nabers was the wrong move.
So we are on to day 2 of the draft, all our picks in front of us.
Schoen and Daboll were trying to draft a better QB, because they felt it was in the best long-term interest of the Giants, NOT because it would guarantee them both a few more years of employment.
Where do you come up with this stuff?

If Schoen and Daboll were trying to draft a QB, then of course they felt it would have been in the best long term interests of the team. I have no doubt about that.
I didn’t come up with the narrative. I read it on several BBI threads.

Outplays Jones in the preseason?
It's Jones' job. It is not an open spot where the best player will play.
Guess you didn't see the part that Daboll and Schoen told Lock he would have a chance to start. That means open competition. Does Jones have an edge because of $$ - yes. However, I doubt he will be ready to play until late September.

I would like to believe this but we've fed quite a bit of bogus info this offseason that I no longer think the Lock stuff is true.

I don't think that there was ever a debate about the GM and HC's motives.

M.S. I'm sure that there was some "talk" on BBI that if the Giants drafted a new QB in RD-1, the result would be that Schoen and Daboll would get a few more years. But I don't recall anyone suggesting that this would be their MOTIVE for drafting a QB. That's two entirely different things.
You created a motive and then told us we should no longer debate said motive, that no one had ever assigned to Schoen and Daboll.
