LOL - Pelissero line on the Falcons

Eric from BBI : Admin : 4/26/2024 8:41 am
Art Stapleton @art_stapleton

Line of the year from @TomPelissero on @gmfb when talking about Atlanta drafting Michael Penix while just signing Kirk Cousins: "This isn't a relationship that's gone south. This is cheating on your wife on the honeymoon."
Did you see
Biteymax22 : 4/26/2024 8:43 am : link
the video of Blank talking to the GM afterwards? Wow did that seem like an uncomfortable conversation.
I loved the pick for them.
Capt. Don : 4/26/2024 8:46 am : link
Kirk Cousins will be 36 when the season starts.

It isnt perfect because Penix is going to sit this year, maybe 2 and he will turn 24 before the season. So he may be 26 before he takes meaningful snaps.

Yeah I don’t think it’s as awful as the mass reaction is making it out to be, but that’s a great line in the OP
I'm 55 so I've seen plenty of drafts
Stu11 : 4/26/2024 8:48 am : link
That might be the most negligent head scratching pick I've ever seen. You just sign a QB for 40 mill per, you have holes all over your roster especially on the defensive side of the ball and you take a 23 yo often injured QB at #8???? I thought we all got pulled or something.

someone sent a message to them:

"Georgia found a new way to fuck a Cousins tonight."

There's no way Fontenot sprung that move on Blank. In fact, there is reporting that the idea came from Blank.

Two people talking with no audio. People invent their own interpretation and then treat it as fact.

I too don’t think it’s that big of a deal
UConn4523 : 4/26/2024 8:50 am : link
Cousins is coming back from injury, no guarantee on how well it responds and if he gets reinjured they are screwed. Now they have what they think are 2 starters operating a fairly loaded offense, good problem to have. They can also trade one of them in the future if the value is right.
I didnt mind them picking a QB
Eric on Li : 4/26/2024 8:51 am : link
not having had the discussion with cousins ahead of time seems moronic after giving him the deal they did.

also have to wonder how thrilled penix is being an older prospect to now likely be stuck behind cousins for at least a year. yeah russ beat out matt flynn, but cousins got paid on a whole other level.

it would be messy but w/ cousins coming off the injury they should let penix compete, though i dont think he will beat out cousins and i dont think they can say that publicly.

For security reasons, no way you can tell Cousins before you are on the clock. Not unless you have him under lock and key, and without his phone.
Guys they just gave a QB 100 million guaranteed
Stu11 : 4/26/2024 8:57 am : link
With a no trade clause. They are a non playoff team with holes to fill and just spent the #8 pick on another QB don't tell me it's a good pick. This is not a fantasy football draft. I'd be ready to throw my TV out the window if the Giants did that.
JJ makes a lot more sense for falcons.
ZogZerg : 4/26/2024 8:58 am : link
He is only 21.
Pennix is 24 and will sit for 2+ years.

Makes no Sense.
Too much mental gymnastics
Blue92 : 4/26/2024 8:58 am : link
to justify this pick. This is a real headscratcher. Why would you sign Cousins in the first place and then select Penix?

It's an awful pick.

Green Bay surprised people, but Love was also 21 then and Green Bay took him down at pick 26.

Penix is 24 next week (Love is 25) and had a history of medical problems. If he wants like Love, he won't receive any meaningful snaps until he's 27 or 28.
It is a bigger deal
jvm52106 : 4/26/2024 9:03 am : link
than most here want to admit. From a building standpoint it makes NO sense. The Falcons haven't been to playoffs in 7 years. They just signed the best QB available in FA to a HUGE guaranteed deal (and will be hit with penalties for early contact in doing so). Your team has holes all over the defense (Edge and LB) and you still could use more weapons at WR to go with Drake London.. You instead take a QB with an injury history, 24 years old and who will be on the bench for at least 2 years if your signing of Cousins works as you expect and have paid for.

Its just bad development.. They could have gone EDGE (Turner, Verse), CB, OL or WR (Thomas) and instead you have a "succession" plan for the guy you JUST signed...
Penix
TyreeHelmet : 4/26/2024 9:03 am : link
I love Penix and I understand the “packers model” but this moves makes no sense. There was always a high probability to an almost certain lock he was going to be available at 8. This wasn’t a surprise to them.

You either take the BPA to fill a need and help the team now. Or just draft penix to play right now and use the cousins money elsewhere.

It’s not as big of a disaster people are making it, but it’s still not a smart allocation of resources.

Green Bay had an aging proven QB and was coming off a 13 win season, Atlanta has holes and hasn't been to the playoffs in 7 years..
By the time Penix starts

how about just lie to him and tell him you may take a young guy to groom at some point in the draft? nobody would have thought twice about that, him included, he's 36.

Just because there's an article on the internet about it doesn't mean its true
But I read on BBI
ThreePoints : 4/26/2024 9:15 am : link
That you should draft a QB early and often, even if you have a started in place.

This is Exhibit A I just laugh at so many people here trying to parse the words of sources and asshats. One team will throw a curveball and the entire first round looks different because of it.

Rodgers had three seasons in a row from 2017 to 2019 where he wasn't playing top QB ball. They had a losing season in 2018, and yes they went 13-3 in 2019, but it wasn't a one man show or anything.

Picking at 26 for a young project like Love is completely different than a top 10 pick on a soon to be 24 year old with a long medical sheet.

You are right, they have holes on roster. Draft Dallas Turner or Jared Verse. Draft one of the lineman to protect your newly signed QB. It's wild .

It's an article on the internet containing a report by Ian Rapoport, a very legit reporter, in advance of the pick.

Versus what? Two people talking with no audio and hot take internet headlines claiming the interaction looks awkward. And taking off from there.

There are people who will insist as fact that Gettleman was against the Toney pick because they thought he looked grumpy in the Giants' draft room when the pick was announced.

bc4life : 4/26/2024 9:29 am : link
Cousins is 35. Penix definitely sits this year. and probably next year learning under Cousins.

They took Jordan Love at the back of the first round and Rodgers was coming off a down season with a contract that did not have much time left. Atlanta used a top 8 pick after they gave a FA an expensive 3 year contract that is not easily cuttable at any point.

This

Going QB at #8 with Odunze available was really dumb

Picking a banged 24 year old was monumentally stupid.

Falcons with a Jets type move.

😂
No, it’s cheating on your wife on your wedding night.
Section331 : 4/26/2024 10:58 am : link
I’m a Penix fan, but what a bizarre pick. It makes no sense. Take a WR, take an OT, maybe an ER. Even if you’re going to take a QB, why the 24 year old with an injury history over the younger JJM? Weird.
I love the pick for the Falcons
Milton : 4/26/2024 11:00 am : link
They stuck to their board. If a QB is your BPA when you're on the clock, you draft him....no matter what! That's my philosophy and apparently Atlanta's too. Others may not see it that way, which is fine, I get it, but there's a logic to it. BPA vs need is always debatable with legitimate arguments each way. You can say you disagree with what Atlanta did, but it's wrong to call it stupid, incompetent, or laughable.

Apparently they told Cousins they were looking to take a QB, but one later in the draft. I looked at ATL as being a favorite in a bad NFCS, but things could get ugly if they struggle out of the gate.
What a crazy idea, to have a QB succession plan!
BH28 : 4/26/2024 11:27 am : link
Sure would be nice if the Giants had one!

Falcons are no stranger to large QB cap hits, they just went through this a year ago. Maybe they were dumb in giving Cousins a huge deal to begin with, but having a rookie who can come in if need be is smart.

Jordan Love is what 25 years old first year as a starter? It's not a big deal for Penix to sit a year or two if Cousins flames out. They can easily manage a cap hit as well if it comes to that. I think it's a forward thinking move by the Faclons; soild back-up plan for Cousins.
