Revisiting Randy Mueller w/ Schmelk

Eric on Li : 4/26/2024 8:48 am
this offseason giants.com has had a lot of good coverage and month ago Mueller was one one of his best guests. The first half of the below was recapping free agency but i linked below to the second half re the draft.

i think ultimately mueller a month ago had pegged the 2 main components of yesterday's decision:

quote #1 re overall strategy

Quote:
"pick the highest player that's rated on their board that's what they should do and I know that's kind of a downer for a lot of draft Knicks that want to plug and play all these players and fill needs here and there I got news for you if they don't get at six a player that's ranked in their top three or four that would be disappointing regardless of position now I understand we may have some position priority whether they end up entering that quarterback Market I don't know you you know more about that than I do John where they and how they feel about Daniel Jones I know this Caleb Williams sets himself apart after that there's a group of four or five including quarterbacks including receivers that I think are really good players but there's a little bit of a gap so I'm not sure I'd be willing to trade up to to nail one of these guys rather than just sit tight and take what comes to me being I'm where the Giants are in their team build so a general answer a more specific answer if I'm the Giants hey that's my view from from the Left Coast 3,000 miles away"

It would seem from the rapoport reporting Drake Maye was 1 of those top 3 players on not only their board but NE/MIN as well, while obviously the other QBs weren't (mueller actually liked jjm best of the non-caleb qbs).

quote #2 Nabers vs Odunze (and MHJ) - I think he pinpointed how things ultimately played out for the NYG decision:

Quote:
"well I think it's a great time to be where they are and have to answer that question but you're exactly right we don't know how the Giants feel about these quarterbacks I'm kind of you know I have one that I like other than Caleb that I would be willing to kind of go up for it may be different than who you like John so it all depends on how they view them and and then the fact of what it would take to get them I agree with you I think the three receivers are all really good NFL receivers but I think more importantly than anything is the skill sets are all different yeah these three receivers are all a little different so rather than match the the the name with the team you need to to match the skill set we are missing with the guys we have and so that'll be interesting I I I know this in evaluating receivers and this has just been my history if you can't get away from people you're going to struggle at the NFL level no matter how good you can catch youve got to be able to separate and get away from people and I know for a fact that the Nabors kid can separate and get away from people and I think I know that odunze can do the same I don't know where I am really on Harrison as being the guy that can get away from everybody all the time he's the biggest he's the best catcher of the bunch I get it but it all depends on what skill set you put at the top of your criteria list the Giants may have a different CR criteria than you for me so it kind of depends on which they which they prioritize first and that will lead you to the receiver they they they select if they should go for a receiver

ultimately ended up being a chalky top 6, i think my biggest takeaways are that they 1- proverbially 'stuck to the board' (1) and 2- swung for the biggest upsides (i think both maye and nabers represented that as much as any one else who went after Caleb). Both Nabers and Maye were on the rawer (and biologically younger) end of things against strong classes, but with tools that gave them undeniably high upsides.
Randy Mueller on 6th pick + WRs - ( New Window )
Sy had JJM rated higher than Maye too.

i think most outside draft commentary on QBs is close to useless but belichek was fascinating to watch yesterday. he was critical of some aspects of all the QBs - particularly daniels/maye - though he did seem most positive on JJM.

the ironic thing about JJM is how many fans have disliked him specifically over the last 6 months but i was personally a fan so id have been fine with that pick and im a little surprised they passed on him.
thanks Eric

won’t change the conundrum here on the board but further confirmation that we got a player
