At safety with him and Belton,(stay healthy please) It’s a big change. McKinney, as good as he was at what he did always seemed more comfortable playing downhill. peppers was the same way.
Using the above, Nubin was the 34th best player in the draft and Giants got him in a need position at #47.
The DTs and CBs went quickly. The other option was to likely give up the 4th rounder or even the 3rd rounder to move up. Nubin is nice value by staying put.
Right now the Giants still have their 3rd rounder and 4th rounder to address DT or CB on defense and TE or RB on offense.
Filling needs with quality. Some had this kid as a 1st rounder. Once you get out of the top 15, positional value goes out the window and you go for quality. This is a playmaker in the secondary. As much as I liked McKinney he didn’t make a lot of big plays.
2 plus starters so far. Can we make it 3?
RE: My only problem with this pick is that he's kind of slow for a db.
Not as important at safety. TE and Edge I’d pay close attention but not every position is created equal. Instincts and smarts close the gap there. Obviously you’d rather have it but that’s why he was there.
a ball hawk, but that's not his value here. He is physical and he tackles. He is smart and instinctive and has a ton of experience in type of coverages we will run. My guess is he will quickly become the field general back there.
But talking to friends he's a straight baller. Some guys testing don't match how they are just straight football players. I think sy is right when he says he could be better than Mckinney and he fits Bowen's system perfectly. 3 safety set will be used too.
tells me they wanted CB, but I bet you this is a guy they targeted.
Definitely
I would guess CB was the one position they were ready to compromise a bit on their value board but the way it played out - Nubin was clear choice over CB

#NYGiants had a private workout at Minnesota with Tyler Nubin. He said Mike Treier and Brandon Brown were there.
Says he's been crying tears of joy for 35 minutes since he got the call.
As a rookie he'll play in some packages and make a few good plays. Then he'll be an ok sort of anonymous starter for 3 years. People will debate about whether he's good or not. Then he'll sign somewhere else for $12 M per year and people will ask whether we are getting a comp pick.

As I said earlier. Just miserable people with miserable lives.
Right? This take was so bad I actually thought it was tongue in cheek
I always thought McKinney (who was a very good player) had no business playing Free Safety. Nubin is a natural (his outstanding tackling skills are an added plus).
I'm going to enjoy seeing starts bet at Free, he or Belton.
When the Giants go to a three safety alignment (3rd and long), with the ball in the air, beware Belton and Nubin are gonna be all over it like "white on rice".

I imagine that would have had a negative impact on his RAS, for all the handwringers

you rather have the 9th or 10th cornerback or the #1 safety?
Ask yourself that same question but in the NFL right now. Safety is the RB of the defense. Add it when you’re ready to compete. Almost makes no sense to let McKinney walk just to use your second on a questionable safety. Don’t like it at all.
You wanted to pay McKinney about 17M a yr? That would've been cray cray.
I don’t understand the whining and gnashing of teeth over this. We NEEDED a safety and we got the best one!
That's a bold statement. Hope you're right. But bold

I hear you.
Yup. Brugler and Tice were saying the exact same thing on The Athletic draft stream. Raved about the fit

saying his RAS was bad - when McKinney was listed with him and they were almost identical and Nubin was a bit faster and bigger.
I didn't know his RAS score until Eric posted it. It definitely surprised me.
Of course, if the score was really high, do you think people would be posting it to further justify the pick?
Looks like RAS really affected by only 10 reps on the bench.

I suggest you read it. It's pure Shane Bowen.

If you find a link, can you post it? I'd love to see it.
But faster than McKinney...

The 31 inch vert worries me more
Someone said he had meniscus surgery in the offseason. That would definitely impact that
Seems like a similar situation with our new safety.
Definitely

New Giants safety Tyler Nubin on a conference call with us: "I've been crying for the last 35 minutes."
Says he's emotional not over the work he has put in, but over all the sacrifices his family and people around him have made to make this possible
Cool moment

New Giants S Tyler Nubin calls himself a "swiss army knife." Attributes his ball skills to his preparation.
"Really instinctive ... A lot of in-ball production ... loves football," one source said of what he brings to the table.
This guy is a football player....probably a starter in camp.
I doubt we lose him in 4 years....he is the type that become member of the ring of honor.
He fits what the new DC wants exactly
