Schoen has a tendency to check needs at non-premium positions on Day 2. Grabbed the likely starting nickel here after grabbing a starter at safety last round. JMS last year and slot WR his first draft.
CB is a premium position
He’s probably an inside corner although some think he can play outside.

Flott can cover, but I hope he improves his tackling
Clearly the new staff prioritizes physicality in secondary
In the case of Nubin, I think he plays with incredible toughness yet intelligence and technique. Phillips to me is physical but grabby and looks for contact rather than taking the best angle.
LOVE Nubin, not a fan at all of Phillips. Which probably means Nubin will bust and Phillips will be a star. It's all a crapshoot. To hell with my evaluations lets hope they're both studs.

Could cover, but the only way he'd ever come up with the ball is if it got stuck in his face mask after it sailed through his hands.
Phillips' highlights showed me a guy who can cover and is a sure tackler, but he seems to have no ball skills, other than knocking it away.
I assume there were guys on the board at other positions with similar grades, but the CB need was high.
FWIW, Justin Pinnick of Talking Giants said, "No interceptions in two years. High missed tackle rate. He allows a LOT of catches. If you're allowing a lot of catches in college, I'm worried that you're going to allow a lot of catches in the pros, as well."

The number of corners Schoen is bringing in is starting to resemble a diner menu. However, I will say this: pass defense - outside of the times they play Dak- is one of the few areas that has been consistently ok in the Schoen/Daboll era (though who knows how much of that is due to Wink).
had to do a bit of a change in direction. I think the Giants were targeting the Corners that went in front of them in Rd 2 and then possibly going Safety afterwards.
But the board didn't fall that way so Schoen pivoted to Nubin who had to be higher on his short list then the next set of corners.
Really like Nubin...he's solid. Just okay with Phillips and really don't know if he can go outside much, if at all. But it's not like our Slot CB doesn't need a big upgrade either. Summer competition there will be interesting to follow.
our DBs coach, not Wink. Remember Fabian Moreau, off the scrap heap, out of nowhere and performed quite creditably in ‘22. Giants have gotten solid play from a not overly talented group
from what I have read, he had ZERO INTs in college and not a significant number of pass breakups. Very little impact it appears. Good athlete though. Not sure he will be any better than Holmes has been.
….
Another depth guy (it seems). Everyone says he's a slot, so he's not CB2 across from Banks. I don't expect much here (no more than they've gotten from Flott), but I'll hope for the best.
On Flott, yes, I’m very mixed on him. On occasion he shows really good cover skills, which is likely why he was drafted where he was. But he is so long, his top end speed is good but he’s not quick in twitch or change of direction. He doesn’t hunger to be physical so his tackling is usually hit or miss.
CB opposite Banks not yet on roster, I hope.
People are making a big deal of lack of interceptions and that matters a bit. But even when a guy gets 5 picks in a season, it’s a 1 percent outcome. The other 99 percent of plays are also really important and this guy is good in those for sure.
