Jordan Riley and DJ Davidson

Giantimistic : 4/27/2024 8:14 am
Both players have had some glimpses of really great plays, are big bodied and this current regimes draft picks.

How do the Giants view these 2 going into the season. Are they just depth or are they, or one of them, expected to step up into a much bigger role this year.

Was the safety we took going to be the pick even if there was a DT there we liked?

DJ Davidson
JoeyBigBlue : 4/27/2024 8:18 am : link
Is probably ahead in the depth chart. He played a ton towards the end of last season. He might be a starter if Phillips or Nunez-Roches get hurt.
I think they are both likely to be good rotational depth
gersh : 4/27/2024 8:30 am : link
After another year
But not yet starter level
They have both shown enough for us to be hopeful
DTs often take a couple of years to gain strength and the recognition skills to make the play

I thought DJ flashed when he got his opportunities.

Does Riley have the range to play DE? I know Dexy was miscast there for years, and they are similar.

One thing about Bowen in Tennessee is that he played a lot of even fronts, and an even higher percentage of sub packages even on first down.

If that continues here, you'll see only 2 big men on most plays and less tradition 3-4 looks that we've been accustomed to under the last few DCs.
Of both importance and relevance, both were taken on day 3 of their

I don’t see either of them sticking around for long

Riley got a TFL on one of his first snaps when he was unblocked . People get carried away when such events occur . As for Davison , it’d been a long time since I’ve seen a Giants DT end up with his cleats in the air more times per snap than this guy.

Good signing off the Bills . Be in the hunt for an addition today .
I expect Giants sign a vet after the draft to a one year
Blue21 : 4/27/2024 9:37 am : link
or two year deal.

I did not word that well
I think they are good rotational depth now
I’m hopeful they can both develop into starters
Realistically, one of them

But, yes, regardless another A’Shawn type vet would be an upgrade and a penetrating DT to play next to Dex in passing downs would be ideal

I'm meh on Davidson but I thought Riley looked really good for a rookie. I'm actually looking forward to seeing how he has progressed as we get into the season. I think he is going to end up being a bigger part of the rotation.
what's missing on the DL is a quicker inside rusher (think jay alford)
Eric on Li : 4/27/2024 11:14 am : link
the 2 guys who fit that still on the board and at the top of BPA are Brandon Dorlus and Mekhi Wingo.

I think the base run stopping DL is likely to start:

A gap = Dex,
B gap = Phillips
over T = Nacho

Davidson and Riley are probably competing for backup A/B gap spots. Not sure Ryder Anderson is someone they still like or camp fodder.

Either way they could use a really athletic 280lb+ player with a quick first step to compete with Nacho. In TEN bowen had Autry and Simmons who fit that role. I don't expect a prospect that good at this point in the draft but there are guys who can play a role.

Good teams
Jon In NYC : 4/27/2024 11:18 am : link
get good value out of late round picks. You'd like to think one of these two but ideally both can be part of a solid DT rotation with Roches, Jordan Phillips and obviously Dex.
this was another couple prospects who nyg visited
Eric on Li : 4/27/2024 11:28 am : link
dont think he'd be an option this early though, he is more of a 6th/7th/udfa type.

Defensive Tackle

The Giants arguably have the game’s best defensive tackle in Dexter Lawrence. They also have have four other players who could be a factor in Rakeem Nunez-Roches, Jordan Phillips, Jordon Riley, and D.J. Davidison. But those guys are more run stuffers. The glaring omission inside is pass-rushing, 3-technique defensive tackle. New Defensive Coordinator Shane Bowen relies on his front four to generate pressure. Do not be surprised to see the Giants take a defensive tackle high. It could make a world of difference to the entire defense. As a matter of fact, if the Giants traded down in the first round, I could see defensive tackle be a very early pick.

I remember the DL Coach Patterson
bc4life : 4/27/2024 2:57 pm : link
telling Riley that he just had a very good game against Kelce, best center in the NFL. He said now you can either rest on that accomplishment or build on it. (Not an exact quote)
Davidson was coming off the acl injury
bc4life : 4/27/2024 3:00 pm : link
then got hurt on a dirty play by 49ers Center. Needs some healthy time to see what he can develop into.

Didn't Wink use a lot of 2 big men looks while here? It seemed like he did.
john franklin meyers would have been a great pick up for a 2026 6th
Eric on Li : 4/27/2024 3:03 pm : link
would have been the perfect guy to fit next to dex and phillips. freaking jets.

So what will Bowens plan be now? Will we see Azeez or someone shift inside on passing downs like Tuck?
