but there are a good number of physical specimen guys with great measurables that are not good football players.
More production in college should have been there.
He only started this year, not a 3 year starter as one scouting report said. He played behind Brenton Strange (2023 2nd round pick) the last few years and the other TE Tyler Warren will be a Day 2 pick next year. Definitely not a polished player (I like Warren better), but the lack of production doesn’t scare me that much.
Theo was timed while doing drills at the combine and he timed at an amazing 23 MPH.
That is crazy fast. Link - ( New Window )
My nephew is at PennState so I watched a bunch of games this year. Theo I really is surprisingly fast. Their passing offense was not much so perhaps some of his lack of development and stats are due to that.
The talent to need ratio in this draft has aligned very nicely. Silver lining to needing help at a lot of positons.
Interior DT/Big DE with pass rushing skills remains
Penn stater here. He is not a blocker. He's actually quite poor there. That's why he started losing reps to Warren. Warren actually started becoming the better receiver of two as well. That said he's very athletic and has a ton of potential. Just don't expect him to be a mauler of a blocker. That's not his game

That's disappointing to hear. He's got the size and speed, and looks like good hands; hopefully he develops as a blocker too.

This is absolutley different then what other evaluators are saying.
STRENGTHS: Good-looking athlete with ideal size/speed measurements for the position … smooth mover with fluid control of his body as a route runner and at the catch point (best short shuttle among tight ends at the combine) … flashes the acceleration to gain a step of separation on runway routes … snares the ball well in stride and quickly secures it to protect the catch … has no problem expanding his catch radius to climb the ladder and adjust to inaccurate passes … looks comfortable securing grabs in traffic … shows his quickness on cutoff blocks and made steady strides with his run blocking … awarded Penn State’s “Iron Lion” Award for strength and conditioning as a senior (NFL scout: “I know (Pat) Freiermuth influenced him a lot when he got there and showed him what it takes to play big-boy football.”) … was a regular on punt- and kick-return coverage as a senior (243 career snaps) … experienced across the formation.
WEAKNESSES: Runs predictable routes and gives tells to defenders on his intended path … has the balance to make the first man miss, just doesn’t do it enough (only two catches of 25-plus yards in 2023) … needs to show better snap through his hips, both as a route runner and blocker … tends to overextend himself as a blocker and needs to improve his base and positioning to control the point of attack … committed five penalties in 2023 (three false starts, one pass interference, one unsportsmanlike conduct) … below-average career production (fewer than 1,000 career receiving yards … off-field vetting will be key, as he was charged with two misdemeanors (one for simple assault, one for criminal mischief), stemming from a February 2023 incident at a fraternity house (Johnson was ordered to complete a
six-month, pre-trial intervention program for first-time offenders).
SUMMARY: A three-year starter at Penn State, Johnson was a versatile tight end in former offensive coordinator Mike Yurcich’s RPO-based scheme, splitting his time between inline (47.9 percent), slot (38.8 percent) and wide (9.8 percent). A wide receiver in high school in Canada, he faced a steep transition moving to tight end at State College and didn’t have a 100-yard receiving performance in 45 college games (and reached 75 yards just once). But his production steadily climbed each season, and he led the Nittany Lions in touchdown grabs in 2023. Johnson is quick off the ball and builds his speed downfield, giving his quarterback a big target with his size, strong hands and athletic catch radius. As a blocker, he doesn’t embarrass himself but needs to better understand leverage and develop more of a glass
chewing mentality. Overall, Johnson has inconsistent college tape and production, but he has A-plus measurements and smooth athletic tools that could allow him to continue developing and become a better pro than college player. Although he is a work in progress, he is a worthy long-term investment for an NFL team.
he's an elite athlete. He can catch the ball. Hard worker and has the size so I'm expecting him to work on his blocking.
How can you not like this pick?
And - he'll be in the TE room with Manhertz and Stoll.

Theo Johnson said he can become a tight end that you can’t take off the field. When it’s all said and done, he wants to become a dominant blocker through more work and attention to detail at the NFL level.

Theo Johnson said he didn't actually visit the Giants, but he had a great experience with Shea Tierney, who was his team's OC at the Senior Bowl. He also knows Daboll's son, Christian, who was a student assistant at Penn State and is now a Giants offensive assistant.

Theo Johnson spent the week at the Senior Bowl getting close with Giants pass game coordinator/QB coach Shea Tierney, who was his OC in Mobile.
Johnson very complimentary of Shea, and says after that he was hoping for NYG in draft.

That is concerning particularly the pass catching as that is where I would have thought he'd be super dominant in college.
made above, Schoen has to be careful about these top 30 visit lists moving forward...I pulled the 30 visit thread this morning to see who they would select and sure enough, right on the money.
Johnson is a nice pick and I am still very high on Bellinger too. Adding in Stoll earlier this offseason and now this unit is coming into shape with some versatile guys in a lot of different formations.

Well, the line stinks, the qb has been underwhelming even though he's a five star, and then you have Warren there. He's fine as a receiver. Warren just has little better hands. He isn't the athlete johnson is though. In the pros I see Warren as more of a safety valve whereas Johnson can be a threat
going back to a bunch of big slobberknockers at TE. Part of blocking is supplemental blocking - the TE's, WR's and RB's. And the Giants have been liabilities there for a long time. Years of Engram (and then Waller) as the starting TE.
More production in college should have been there.

feels weird. maybe Johnson was their top ranked player, but it's unlikely imo
need/panic + comfy with him after the 30 meet over a better proven football player seems extreme with Schoen pick after pick, no?
When you go to the supermarket to buy food, do you buy what you need, or do you walk around looking for the best product available at the best price?
Good analogy

Like I said, Kittle had extremely low college production. I could see this.

BC - I don't really know him or his game. Any good?

maybe we should go back to calling them top 30?
It's incredible. They have to start being careful about this moving forward.
It would be interesting to see how that correlates with other teams.
Worried too. Adrien Robinson v 2.0?
To be fair it’s r4. If he even plays at an NFL avg starting TE level it’s solid considering giants depth at position recent years.
And why would you say it isn’t?

Because it seems like most picks are considered good...until they start to play, as we've seen over and over again.

No need to automatically assume when it winds up being the case more times than it doesn't.
It worked for them in 2022, too.
