Ridiculously Early Draft Grades Coming In

Trainmaster : 4/27/2024 9:29 pm
Of course "talk to me in 3 years" is the correct mindset, but for those who need more assurances or fodder to rant, here are some:

PFF:

NEW YORK GIANTS: A-

ATLANTA FALCONS: C-
DALLAS COWBOYS: B-
PHILADELPHIA EAGLES: A+
WASHINGTON COMMANDERS: A

https://www.pff.com/news/draft-2024-nfl-draft-grades-all-32-teams

Sporting News:

2. Philadelphia Eagles Grade: A
3. Washington Commanders Grade: A
23. New York Giants Grade: B-
25. Dallas Cowboys Grade: C
30. Atlanta Falcons Grade: C-
32. Las Vegas Raiders Grade: D

https://www.sportingnews.com/us/nfl/news/nfl-draft-grades-2024-best-worst-classes/95666a96709d1d94631633f5

My guess is those sites (and fans) that thought coming out of the draft without a 1st round QB (or any QB) was a major flaw, will have lower grades.

Those who see quality, BPA type picks in need positions, at least in the first 4 picks, will have higher grades.

Let the assurances or ranting begin!

I'm not sure how you can't give Philly an A, if not A+

Atlanta Falcons D
Pittsburgh Steelers B

At least most so far as as confused with what Atlanta did as I am.

The AP with a better job, acknowledging the unfortunately excellent / outstanding drafts the Eagles and Commanders had. The Steelers are a little low IMHO.

Glad I’m not the only one who thinks this. Day 1 and 2 were excellent for us. Theo Johnson is going to contribute early. Could have 5 future starters in this class and I’m a cynic when it relates to the draft.

A lot of them will start or contribute significantly because of the poor quality of the existing roster. I’m not sure that is a the barometer for a good draft. For example, you could say any TE the Giants drafted today will probably contribute this year.

Makes sense, but when they call them all reaches past Nubin, that's confusing. If you need a CB and TE with those next picks, I guess I am wondering how you ensure you take them at precisely the right time to not be a reach. Much like the QB tax in the quarterback trade up calculous, wouldn't specific team need maybe apply a weight to that particular pick that makes it less of a reach. Like sure, maybe he shouldn't go at pick 150, he is supposed to go 160ish, but if he was a need too, that would cancel it out? I don't know, all this instant analysis is entertaining but mostly meaningless

Giving the Eagles an A and the Falcons a C or lower is becoming an "IQ Test" on the very early 2024 draft takes.

That much of the roster required upgrading didn't preclude the possibility of Schoen (or any GM) drafting without an eye for team needs or any apparent strategy.

Not forcing a QB selection when the guy we wanted wasn't there, drafting quality players to replace departing vets, ignoring position groups that were addressed in free agency - all these are signs the Schoen has planned his work and worked his plan.

True.

However, Nabers was the #1 or #2 in the entire draft. Nubin was the #1 safety off the board. The pundits almost universally loved Phillips. Theo Johnson has NFL starter potential. Just watch the tape on Tracy... at worst, he's a 3rd down back.

A nice article with write ups in addition to grades. The Giants were ranked 12 of 32 (1 is best) on their draft. Best pick is Nabers. Worst is Darius Muasau.

https://www.si.com/nfl/2024/04/27/2024-nfl-draft-team-grades-analysis

The grades are based on where the authors rated these players
Mike from Ohio : 4/27/2024 10:21 pm : link
I don’t think anyone disagrees that the Nabors pick was good. Nubin was also a good pick. You can make arguments on all the rest based on individual assessments.

A slot corner from Kentucky with no career INTs? I am not going to say the pick is good, bad or indifferent - but I am not going to say that I don’t understand how it can be criticized.

Today’s grades don’t matter at all. Last year everyone laughed at Detroit’s draft. Who those players become in 2-3 years is all that matters.
Grades are also largely driven
Mike from Ohio : 4/27/2024 10:23 pm : link
By how a team addressed their needs. You can argue the Giants two biggest needs were QB and Oline and they did not do anything in the draft to address those. You can argue why they didn’t, but these guys are rating 32 drafts in a few hours - it is a very quick, binary analysis.

bw in dc : 4/27/2024 10:36 pm : link
QB, WR, RB, OL, DL, Edge.

We drafted no QB, OL, or DL.

It looks like we drafted a great WR prospect. And maybe a versatile RB on day three. And we added Burns for a massive contract.

Any grade is certainly subjective. My conclusion is we missed out on a rare opportunity to take one of six QBs with day one or day two grades. Three went before our pick and three went after. And that knocks the grade down to a C-.

That you should draft an OL and a DL in every draft. That lowers my grade a bit, but I like the type of guys they drafted. Im going to give them a solid B mostly for the Nubin and Phillips picks. Getting a top offensive skill player at 6 is wash for me, because it's a no brainer pick imo.

That's right, because you just take any one of the six holy quarterbacks. It really doesn't matter whether you actually believe in them, you just draft a QB.
Nate Davis (USA Today) Draft Grades
M.S. : 4/28/2024 5:36 am : link

3. Philadelphia Eagles (A)

They got, arguably, the draft’s best defensive back (Toledo first-rounder Quinyon Mitchell). They got, arguably, the draft’s most athletic and versatile defensive back (Iowa second-rounder Cooper DeJean). Third-rounder pass rusher Jalyx Hunt is an intriguing project and fourth-round Clemson RB Will Shipley could maximize the plays Saquon Barkley takes off. Michigan G Trevor Keegan and Florida State WR Johnny Wilson are high-ceiling Day 3 picks, and fifth-round Clemson LB Jeremiah Trotter Jr. puts the cherry on top with the sentimental homecoming factor … at a position that’s seemingly been unsettled since dad left.

5. New York Giants (A)

The Daniel Jones haters may not be mollified, but given the team was wed to him contractually this season regardless, GM Joe Schoen and HC Brian Daboll went about the draft the right way. First-round WR Malik Nabers (LSU) should be a field-flipping asset to Jones and/or whomever eventually replaces him. Third-round Kentucky CB Dru Phillips will compete against anybody. Some second-round maneuvering over the past few months netted highly regarded Minnesota S Tyler Nubin and former Panthers pass rusher Brian Burns, who's already signed an extension and now bookends Kayvon Thibodeaux. Solid-plus.

6. Washington Commanders (A-)

No. 2 overall pick Jayden Daniels (LSU) could be their dynamic, long-sought franchise quarterback after the previous regime spent years kicking that can down the road. Second-round DT Johnny Newton (Illinois) and DB Mike Sainristil (Michigan) could be both be foundational players for the incoming staff … though Newton’s arrival seems to signal Jonathan Allen or Daron Payne could be a short-timer. And it’s worth wondering if the former decision-makers did the current ones a disservice by dealing Sweat as pass rush is still an issue here. Third-round WR Luke McCaffrey certainly has the bloodlines – and maybe the talent to be an impact target for Daniels from the slot.

31. Dallas Cowboys (D)

An organization that’s allegedly “all in” uses its first-rounder on a tackle (Oklahoma’s Tyler Guyton) with tremendous upside but who may or may not be ready to play immediately. And while the Cowboys needed help in the trenches (second-round DE Marshawn Kneeland, third-round G Cooper Beebe) and potentially filled a hole with third-round Notre Dame LB Marist Liufau, what’s the plan at tailback? Run it back with Ezekiel Elliott? All … in?

Thursday morning, before a pick was made, you knew the formulas to get a good, or bad grade from the publications. Just agree with their rankings…

In reality, if you pick the big names, and agree with the publications, you grade well. So having lots of picks, espcially early ones (top ten especially) you will grade well.
Pick the names they know, you grade well.
Trade down a few times, you grade well
Draft players that are falling in the draft, you grade well.

It’s a joke

Seriously?

The Eagles picked 9 players, that means everyone is a good player?

The Giants had 11 picks in 2022. Do they win the draft because they had the most picks? They had 10 picks in 2020, did they win the draft? They have 2 players left from that 2020 draft. 2 became consistent starters (AT and McKinney). The draft is not about quantity and grading drafts the day after the draft is to appeal to the lowest common denominator among us to provide validation. Try not to be the LCD.

Why do I picture some of you eating paste in kindergarten?
