Nick Falato - All-22 Film Breakdown: Theo Johnson.

Nick Falato breaks down the tape of Penn State TE Theo Johnson, who has three-down TE 1 potential.

Johnson combines elite size with rare athletic traits for the position. He has good overall play speed, and is an above-average blocker who has flashes of brilliance. Nick goes through the All-22 to showcase the incredibly high ceiling of Johnson, and how he will fit with the New York Giants.

I'll give this a watch/listen.
One thing that should be added,
DonnieD89 : 4/28/2024 7:47 am : link
and this was pointed out by both Dan and Nick,, was that he had limited play throughout his college career. The Penn State tight end room was stacked and the opportunity was limited earlier in his career. There’s a lot of untapped potential with this guy, not only through talent, but experience.

I find crazy is the pessimists who downed the move and post as if he'll never make something of himself. It's the 4th round. Do people not understand how many flame out in these later rounds? He's gamble but so is every other pick. He tested great and is a big kid. He could be Adrien Robinson or maybe these coaches can turn him into a rotational player, or perhaps a starter. Giants definitely need a 2 way kind of TE and truthfully haven't had one since Marty Bennett and before him, Shockey.

Who was downing the pick? If you are talking about draft grades, that is just based on preference. I understand preferring another player, but don’t recall seeing anyone say Johnson was a poor pick in the 4th round.

Me neither. Sy picked him as his guy for the Giants in real time too. His potential excites me and also helps to accelerate and ease the departure on Waller off the roster.
Johnson and Nubin really come across as great kids.

Very excited to see them both. Nubin seems like a leader type already. Lots of untapped potential from Johnson. Kid has elite measurables and extremely high character.
I’m really excited

For this pick. Def a guy I wanted.

We have 2 young 2 way tight ends. Really stoked to see what dabs and Kafka come up with.
I love this pick, I think TJ is going to be
Section331 : 4/28/2024 12:15 pm : link
really good. It may take a year or 2, but I’ll be surprised if he isn’t one of the best 2-way TE’s in the league in a couple of years.
Galati and Skinner love this kid

Very glad to see guys who spend a lot of time looking at all these tapes like a guy we pick up, I’m all in on that.
What really impressed me ...

Was what he is doing NOW that Evan Engram finally figured out how to do when he went to JAX is that Johnson turns his body to present a perpendicular target for his QB which makes it easier to throw to, but MOST importantly easier to see the ball coming. That's the reason we saw so many tipped balls thrown to Engram that he either dropped or were intercepted.

Does he do this naturally or is it a product of coaching, doesn't matter. He's not Brock Bowers, (running a 4.4 forty) but at 260, he has the goods to be a lot of help at the line, helping to block.
