Unfortunately, no DT was drafted over this weekend. Holes needed to be filled, and I have no problem as to how the draft fell for the Giants. You are never totally going to get what you want in the draft. Giants do not have that 3-tech type penetrating DT on the roster. Are they going to try to utilize Burns, Thibodeaux, and Ojulari combinations to produce pressure? I’m not sure, as I think they are going to be too small and overpowered. It sounds like they’re going to wait for the June 1 cuts.
Dex
Nunez-Roches
Davidson
Phillips
Riley
Horne and Anderson are no lock for the team. I can see them picking up a 6th player for the line after June 1st cuts as the OP suggested.
I do envision packages with two of the players mentioned above and all three of Burns, Thibs, and Ojulari in at the same time. Especially on third and 5+ situations.
Depth is still spotty (at best), but at least they should be able to then be competitive across the 22.
Dex plays about 70-75% of snaps. Think he’ll be spelled by Davidson when he’s not on the field.
The other spot, I think snaps will mostly be split between Phillips & Riley, with Nacho getting some looks in run situations. They also have a 6th DL - Timmy Horne- who is a sleeper to make the 53. He started 5 games for ATL in 2022.
Building teams involves closing holes, not opening up new ones. Some teams may have so many highly paid players on the roster that they need to unload a good player just to pay the rent. The Giant' are not in that situation right now. DJ's load on the budget will probably go away next season.
Keep McKinney, draft a DT first or second and, if the drafted DT cooperates, you have a defense with few holes. Mostly at corner.
Many here have always been uncomfortable when they have to pay a good player whom they drafted and developed a fair salary compared to others similarly situated.
Maybe they are right, but whatever the Giants have been doing, it hasn't been working. They have let some good players leave.
