Why didn’t Tommy Devito start the remainder of the YR

RELICDOA : 4/28/2024 8:08 pm
If we knew Tyrod was bouncing? All signs pretty much pointed to him leaving. Why not give the kid all the reps and experience? Was this a solid to help Tyrod land a future gig? I would’ve started Devito to see how he developed. We already knew what we had in Tyrod. To be honest Devito was the only reason the Giants were relevant and exciting later in the year…. Only to bench him seemed weird.
He pissed off Daboll audibling out of a sure first down

Deep in the Eagles territory in our first gsmd against the Eagles. They benched him at half (this play was right before half) and he never saw the field again.

Didn’t Tyrod audible out of the last play of the game against Buffalo to lose the game?

It wasn’t one play or audible.

That’s for certain. Tyrod is better than Devito, and TD had his opportunities to prove otherwise. In fairness, Tyrod is a quality backup QB and has so much more experience.

Back to the idea that it was one mistake…let’s assume that’s true. I’m now in favor of firing Daboll for benching a UDFA rookie QB over one mistake. See how insane that sounds? It didn’t happen like that.
He was overmatched against the Eagles
k2tampa : 4/28/2024 8:19 pm : link
They scored 3 points in the first half against a struggling team. They scored 22 with Taylor in the second half. It had nothing to do with an audible.

Not saying that he couldn't develop into something with time. But Tyrod gave us the best chance to win.

He's a udfa, you don't do that. It cost is 3-7 pts against a division rival. He got benched for the year after thst.

Especially if he makes the team this year. His story and persona was the only reason the Giants were being talked about regardless of he was ass or not. If he had started we might’ve had a higher draft pic and this board potentially be alot less hostile! 😂😉

Can you explain why DJ had no problem throwing the ball downfield in his rookie year but after that lost the nerve?
Devito

He and his agent were like 2 Jersey Shore types shaking down a pizzeria because of beating the packers. He had 158 yards passing in that game just being a manager. When the owners got wind of this they had him apologize and as a good will gesture
do the appearance for free. Other than that he played really bad teams and beat the commanders because of a 6-0 turnover
edge. He was sacked 10 times by a team that just traded away their 2 best pass rushers and just barely edged them out for a win

I think JJ had a lot to do with it. Jones' first year-where I actually thought @ times we might have something @ QB-he let it fly down the field. Judge comes in in '20 & installs a very conservative attack.

He took more shots down the field, but also was taking forever getting the ball out and fumbling like crazy.

Week 1: vs. Dallas Cowboys

Despite showing promise by being able to run the ball effectively, the Giants opening drive ended in disaster. First, Andrew Thomas was flagged for a false start, then rookie center John Michael Schmitz snapped the ball well behind Daniel Jones, causing a sack, and then Graham Gano's field goal attempt was blocked, with Dallas returning it for a touchdown. This set the tone for the rest of the night as the Giants were unable to get anything going in any of the three phases of the game. Jones was under duress the entire game and threw two interceptions with the first being returned for a touchdown by DaRon Bland, his first touchdown of a record-setting season.

The Giants were shut out for the first time since Week 15 of the 2018 season and this was their worst shutout loss since Week 1 of the 1995 season (also against Dallas) as well as their worst loss against Dallas since 1966.

In one of the worst losses in franchise history, the Giants became the first team in NFL history to lose a game by 40+ points, get out-sacked by seven or more , lose three or more turnovers more than forced, have a blocked field goal returned for a touchdown, and throw a pick six in a single season. The Giants did all this in the same game.[40]

Week 2: at Arizona Cardinals

After a historically bad loss, the Giants traveled out west to take on the Cardinals. The Giants started out flat, trailing 20–0 at the half. James Conner scored on a 4-yard scamper and Joshua Dobbs was 12/16 with 146 passing yards along with 41 rushing yards and a touchdown, while the Giants only had 81 total yards of offense. Through 6 quarters, the Giants were outscored 60–0, the worst start by an NFL team since the 1978 Baltimore Colts and was their first time not scoring through the first 6 quarters since 1934.

The Giants came out firing after halftime, scoring on every drive in the second half, and outscored the Cardinals 31–8 to win the game 31–28. On the first play from scrimmage, Daniel Jones found rookie Jalin Hyatt for a 58-yard catch, his first in the NFL. Jones scored on a QB option two plays later, then the Cardinals responded with a touchdown and 2-point conversion to take a 28–7 lead. Jones led the Giants on a 12-play, 75-yard drive to bring the game back to two scores and galvanized the defense by forcing the Cardinals to punt for the first time in the game. Jones then led the Giants on another methodical 13-play, 80-yard drive and cashed in on a 9-yard touchdown pass to Saquon Barkley on 3rd & Goal. After forcing a 3-and-out, Jones and the Giants tied the game with a touchdown pass to Isaiah Hodgins. After forcing another 3-and-out, Jones and Barkley took the Giants into field goal range and Graham Gano scored the game-winning field goal with 19 seconds remaining. The Giants tied the franchise record for the largest comeback win of 21 points, their first since 1949.[41]

With the win, the Giants picked up their first win of the season, improving to 1–1. Daniel Jones became the first player in NFL history to throw 250+ yards, run 50+ yards, have 2+ pass TDs, have 1+ rushing TD, and no turnovers in a single half.

Week 3: at San Francisco 49ers

The Giants headed into this game short-handed without Saquon Barkley and Andrew Thomas missing his 2nd straight game. The two teams traded field goals early on before the Niners started to pull away with two more touchdown drives before going into halftime.

In the second half, the Giants had their second drive start from the 37-yard line of the 49ers thanks to a 15-yard penalty due to Eric Gray being interfered with while calling for a fair catch on a punt. Three plays later after another lengthy pass interference penalty, Matt Breida ran the ball in from eight yards out, providing the only touchdown of the night for the Giants and only trailed 20–12 after the end of the third quarter, but the 49ers pulled away in the fourth and won 30–12.

Throughout the night, the offensive line again struggled to protect Daniel Jones and the Giants could not establish any running game. The defense constantly failed to get off the field on 3rd down and had 18 missed tackles.

Daniel Jones fell to 1–11 in primetime games as the Giants lost their 6th consecutive game on Thursday Night Football dating back to 2016. Additionally, they have lost two Thanksgiving games during this span.

Week 4: vs. Seattle Seahawks

The Giants returned home for their Monday Night Football matchup against the Seahawks. Daniel Jones was flustered and threw 2 interceptions while being sacked a career-high 11 times. The second was a dagger for the Giants, a red-zone pick-six to rookie Seahawks cornerback Devon Witherspoon to make it a 3-score game.

With the loss, the Giants fell to 1–3. The Giants offensive line woes continued when rookie C John Michael Schmitz left the game with a shoulder injury.

Week 5: at Miami Dolphins
Week 5: New York Giants at Miami Dolphins – Game summary

The Giants scored on a Jason Pinnock 102-yard interception return in the second quarter of the game, the team's first first-half touchdown of the season, to close to within 7 points of the Dolphins at half-time. However, they only managed two field goals in the second half as they failed to score an offensive touchdown for the second game in a row, and third overall, as they lost 16–31 to fall to 1–4. The season's offensive line problems continued for the Giants, with Daniel Jones being ruled out of the game midway through the fourth quarter with a neck injury sustained while being sacked for the sixth time.

Tyrod Taylor didn't just give the Giants the best chance to win, he gave the young talent on the offense the best chance to develop at their craft. Youngsters like Hyatt, Robinson, JMS, Neal, etc, are all more likely to improve if there's a veteran QB behind center making the right decisions pre- and post-snap.

Then he was in over his head, which was inflated by that point and he went to Tyrod for a lift he got it and then became the hot hand and Dabol rolled woth it the rest of the way.

He wasnt playing Devito to develop him he was winning games

He got over inflated because the Def was playing off the charts. They had 11 turnovers in the 3 games he won. Fans gave him credit for some dumb reason when you can see he wasn’t good. Once the turnovers of 4 a game stopped they were like oh wow he is brutal.

The Game is About More Than the QB
varco : 4/29/2024 6:46 am : link
While developing a young QB is an admirable thing, that's what the preseason is about. Once the regular season begins, it's about the other 52 players on the team. They all (hopefully) are busting their tails to win - why let them down and demoralize them because you are trying to give reps to someone who clearly is in over their head?

Daboll rode the "hot hand" until it cooled off and then made the switch to the QB who gave them the best chance of winning. I get the sense that the players appreciate that. They have as much stake in the team as the QB.

During the stretch of games he played, I warned against the "Tommy Cutlets" BS and how DeVito needed to tone down the off field nonsense and stick to the game. Since he wasn't cut and the Giants did not draft a developmental QB, he still has a chance if he adopts a serious demeanor and does his off season homework. It looks like he has some support in the building, so far.
3 Reasons
eclipz928 : 4/29/2024 7:00 am : link
The Giants were trying to win games, and Tyrod gave them the best chance to win over Devito.

Regardless, Devito was never going to be more than a 3rd string QB this year - he didn't play well enough in time he had to earn being the primary backup to Jones on the roster. The Giants knew they would bring in another veteran, or use their first pick in the draft, once Tyrod left.

But generally, the Giants try to treat their veteran players with respect. We saw this the year before when they started Davis Webb in a game over Tyrod (knowing that Webb was going to retire). Again, there wasn't really anything to gain by starting Devito so it was the right thing to do to let Tyrod play and put out more film to maybe increase interest from other teams. The Giants themselves may have actually been considering bringing him back as backup so it was helpful to them too.

Let's put some context in that 22 points.

Second half opens with a TD after a 14 yard drive after Philadelphia fumbled and it was all handoffs. The ensuing drive, the Eagles are marching then Hurts throws an errant pass into Adoree's hands and be returns it for six.

20-3 suddenly became 20-18. They had three more drives: punt; deep bomb to Slayton for TD and INT. So essentially he provided the one TD and nothing else.

This is the problem that I have with the decision. At that point in the season the goal was not to win games. It was to set up the team for next season. That doesn't mean throwing games (creates a bad culture) but it does mean giving reps to players that might help in the future even in they are not your best option now. THat is obvious. And if you lose an extra game or two so much the better.

The statement that Devito is never going to be more than a 3rd stringer is crazy. It could be true. Or he might be a legit NFL starter. See Purdy or Romo. Unlikely, but it happens. You figure that stuff out with coaching and game reps.

There were a lot of dumb coaching moves last year. Starting Taylor was one of the dumbest.

As fans we really need to get over this diamond in the rough, Brock Purdy fantasy - that there's somehow a guy buried in the roster, or who could be taken late in he draft, that will somehow exceed expectations and can be a franchise quarterback. That kinda thing just doesn't happen in the NFL except for by a combination of luck and circumstance. We all saw enough of Tommy Devito last year - he's simply not a QB that you go into 2024 thinking will be the #2 behind an injury prone starter.
