The case for the Giants trending in the right way

CMicks3110 : 4/29/2024 9:26 am
Alright, let's break it down. Yesterday, I tossed out this question https://corner.bigblueinteractive.com/index.php?mode=2&thread=646200: Are the Giants even moving in the right direction? And guess what? Got a whole mixed bag of responses. People are kinda sitting on the fence. It's all about whether we're clinching those wins, racking up the points, and what the deal is with Daniel Jones.

Honestly, can't argue with any of that. If we're staring down the barrel of another top 10 pick next year, well, that's a flashing neon sign that things ain't going too hot. Could mean the end of the line for the Schoen/Daboll duo.

But here's another angle to chew on. The Giants? They're younger, more athletics, and in a great cap situation? Pretty darn healthy—better than they've been in ages. We've got around four potential superstars (Dex, Thomas, Burns, and Nabers), a handful more who could snag some Pro Bowl nods (Okereke, Thibs, Banks), and a bunch of up-and-comers who could be solid long-term players (Wan'Dale, Nubin, Bellinger/Johnson, Singletary, Hyatt). Obviously we also have some open questions in JMS and Neal, but I can't imagine them being worse than last year, and we have a few solid vets to hold the fort to at least given Jones a chance (Runyan, Elumanor).

And hey, check this out. We're sitting pretty with our cap situation, ready to splash some cash when the mood strikes. Thanks to the dumpster fire that was the 2021 draft, we don't have anyone demanding a big payday anytime soon. Those we might wanna lock in for the next couple of years (Azeez, Wan'Dale, Pinnock, Bellinger)? They won't break the bank.

Now, if we peek ahead to the 2026 season-yes I know that's far out there, but I'm thinking we've got about 15 starters we can bank on, and that's not even counting Jones, Neal, Singletary, or our CB2—all of whom will be 28 or younger by then.

Assuming Waller and Jones are off the books by then, we're talking $150 million in cap space, most of our key players locked in, and maybe even $100 million to spare if we keep everyone and make some smart moves with KT and Neal.

With all that in mind, I'm feeling pretty good about where we're headed. Grab a QB in the top 10-15 range, beef up the squad with some depth and a few top free agents, and boom—we're looking mighty fine come '26.

And if we luck out with a top QB and our young guns like Neal and JMS do level up, we could be staring down the barrel of some real sustained success.

Sure, the QB situation might have us all scratching our heads, but nab someone on the level of Kerry Collins from back in the late '90s? We could be a force to be reckoned with in no time.

So yeah, maybe there's a glimmer of hope after all.
In comparison
CMicks3110 : 4/29/2024 9:46 am : link
coming off the 2021 season, we stuck with older, unproductive vets, with only maybe 10 players who could predictably be starters by the 2023 season (Barkley, Thomas, Lawrence, Leo, and McKinney) with clear busts in Golladay, Toney, Engram (though he's a victim of circumstance). The depth was non-existent and the salary cap was in shambles and that was with a rookie QB contract. What a disaster Gettleman was.
I doubt Schoen is on any hot seat.
George from PA : 4/29/2024 9:53 am : link
Mara and Tisch are super impressed by his team. They are extremely prepared....a ton of check and balances. Going from Gettleman big bjnder to the state of the art draft room.....is all you need to see

They go back and study what they missed with playera.....currently reviewing Neal.

Schoen is not going anywhere.

Knowing Daboll and Schoen relationships....also tells me, Daboll is safer than we might think.

I assume positional coaches will take the hit for shortcoming...like the OL coach.

Unfortunately, football is relative and Our division is tough. The Giants might be viewed as the weakest link.

Pre-season doesn't really allow teams to fully prepare....

The new defense might take time.

The OL must get better.

Who really knows when Jones will see field and eventhough. I am hopefully. Lock is a Longshot to be good/great starter.

The bright spot, I feel Dallas has fallen back to the pack.

Not sure what caused the Eagle collapse..
.but they will rebound.

The Commander will be more competitive
I think the question is, have they closed the

projecting two years down the road. Not with a violent contact sport with lots of injuries. 2023 had Thomas, Jones, Barkley, Waller, just for starters.

The biggest glimmer of hope, that I see, is that last year's offensive line was the worst in the league in 3 decades. That's close to 1,000 total offensive lines combined for all teams over that span.

I simply do not see how this year's OL will not improve over that. How much they improve, is yet to be seen.

And, one of biggest mistakes this team has made is not having a quality backup for Thomas. They foolishly think that they are set at that position. In the NFL, no team is set at any position.
Like your optimism…..

It’s better then to keep reading about all the doom and gloom because we didn’t draft a QB. I too think the roster is shaping up and looks better than in recent seasons. If we can cut down on injuries, we will be competitive IMO. If the Oline is at best average, we will be competitive. And lastly, I do believe our defense will be better too, not only against the run, but overall. It might take a little to gel, but I think we’ll see things looking up this year. 😁
Some argue that it makes sense...
Brown_Hornet : 4/29/2024 10:10 am : link
...to get the team built before taking a QB. Others would suggest that it makes sense to grab the QB whenever the opportunity presents itself.

Well, maybe, by default, the Giants are doing both?

The fact that Neal was considered the #1 left tackle in the 22 draft. He isn't and never will be a right tackle. Move him to left guard.
The over/under in 2023 was 7.5

The over/under for 2024 is 6.5.

Are we really going the right way?

Depends. If we shatter the over, then I would say we're doing alright. If we're even, we still have some work. If we're under? Well the answer is no. GREAT QUESTION!

I don't think over/under is a determination of going the right way. The over/under is based a lot on what happened the previous year. The truth will be in the results.

The giants certainly believe they are building a team in the right direction. I can see where there has been improvements, but know they will still need to do more.

In 2023 the over/under was 8.5 around this time of year (on Draft Kings). I wasted absolutely no time on betting the under on that. I'm not sure why there was so much optimism entering 2023. I suppose it's because of the playoff victory over the Vikings and their pathetic defense. However, let's face it, if not for the now watered down NFL playoffs, neither team would've been considered a true contender.

Gettleman was god awful but I would pump the brakes on the draft room comparison. Gettleman drafted two all pro players.

Who the best player Schoen has brought in?

I have hope but I need see some proof he can do this.
Good post, this sums up how I feel.
BleedBlue46 : 4/29/2024 11:42 am : link
I like the roster that's shaping up sans QB, more help on the D and O line. We are getting there. I'm excited to watch college football this year as the QB class won't be as bad as many here presume. Jaxson Dart, Shedeur Sanders, Carson Beck, Cam Ward, Jalen Milroe, Drew Allar, Riley Leonard, and Quinn Ewers are the 8 big ones to watch. Some of these guys will definitely take a big step. I predict four rd1 QBs with very little competition for QBs in the draft.

Opposing defenses will not have to game plan for Barkley like they always did, will be interesting to see how DJ responds to that. In the past, it wasn't good. For that reason, I think we are trending in the right direction roster-wise while still likely facing a bad record and a chance at a QB in draft.

Two important things to remember
rich in DC : 4/29/2024 11:42 am : link
One- yes, the team has improved over where it was when Daboll and Schoen came on board. The team has fewer players who start for the Giants but would start for few or no other teams- a big problem under the prior group.

Two- just because the Giants are better and will likely play better does NOT mean that this impacts the W/L record. Schedule and the teams we play influence that more than anything else. The 2024 schedule, especially the road teams, is VERY tough. Thus, the Giants could get much better OL play, good QB play and better defense- and still have fewer wins than last year.

Let's hope that since it was reportedly Mara's decision to veto giving the Pats the assets needed for a Maye trade that if the QB position continues to be a black hole in 2024 that he remembers that the blame lies with the person looking back in the mirror at him. of course, Daboll could lose the team if the losing run continues too- and then all bets are off.

I remember the o/u being 6.5 last year too, which surprised me.

These days it's all about the QB. So both can be true. We could have a record similar to this year with 6-7 wins while having a roster that is trending in the right direction. Jones is going to have to play against defenses that aren't solely focused on stopping Saquon, which is a huge test and will likely lead to a poor record.

I honestly wonder if not having Barkley is a plus. Teams were always so geared up to stop him that they were dismissive of the wide receivers.

Singletary is not that guy, and teams will be more concerned with the speed of the wide receivers that I can see less loading of the box and more spread out, creating lanes for the running game.

Teams have to know that Hyatt, Nabers and Robinson can beat them if they aren't on their game.

They will just focus on getting behind the LOS and clogging lanes for short throws and running, I'd imagine not having to game plan around stopping Barkley will only make defenses tougher to beat for DJ.

Excellent points. I'd add:
- Burns and Nabers are likely huge impact players -- both fill glaring holes that Wink and Daboll/Kafka needed to bandaid via scheme, so there will also be positive ripple effects.
- A decent at worst OL is absolutely necessary (though not sufficient). As Chris Simms said, Tom Brady in his prime would've struggled behind our impossibly bad OL (he might or not looked as bad as Jones).
- STs .... as bad as last season was, decent STs would have won 2-3 more games. Olszewski on roster day one, a healthy punter and kicker, new coach and a seeming dat 3 emphasis on STs make a case for optimism.
- I expect a better running game. Sacrilege perhaps, but to my eyes Barkely hasn't given us what we really need -- a mode (not average) of 4 yards or so -- since his rookie year. We'll get chunks via the pass (if we can't that's its own problem) - we need a consistent 3-4 yards AND one yard when we need it 8 out of 10 times.

I'm not touching the BBI third rail of QB situation other than Jones abilities to
a) deliver explosive plays as needed to raise his game over '22
b) stay healthy
both remain questions, with a new question mark about the ACL impact on his running game. The most important of half a dozen questions that remain unanswered because of injuries last season.

I'm personally VERY optimistic because (outside being my nature) I think we filled glaring holes: bookend edge, short yardage, an explosive receiver who needs to be game planned for (and I think Hyatt and Wandale will ready to light it up). Plus the new secondary pieces. Also, while I liked Wink, I'd prefer a fundamentally sound defense that can pressure a QB without fabricating it.

I'd also add that given last years injury insanity -- and despite the trauma of Dallas 1 -- winning 2-3 games less than hoped last season doesn't bother me nor much matter any more anyway.
