Marco Vargas is injured, unclear if it's the same issue that has limited him to 3 games and a previous IL stint

-Infielder/centerfielder Jett Williams, the Mets’ top prospect, went on the seven-day injured list with Double-A Binghamton because of a right wrist issue.

After he jammed it, sat out for a week and didn’t feel well enough to play, the Mets opted to officially sideline him. He might get a cortisone injection, and the Mets are inclined to take his return very slowly, given his importance to the organization.

Before getting hurt, Williams was off to a slow start at the plate, batting .180 with a .668 OPS. He also played several games at second base, his first professional exposure to that position, his potential eventual defensive home.

Saul Garcia (received a nice report from @BaseballAmerica before the season) has been activated from the 7 day IL. Garcia has stuck out 7 over 3.2 innings of work for @stluciemets. He figures to join @BKCyclones shortly

Wow! He's been one of the nice non-pitcher developments.

As for their pitching, I've been following their prospects for 30+ years. I honestly don't remember a time when they've had the organizational pitching depth that they do now. They've had times where they had higher end prospects, of course. But just the sheer depth is impressive.

Troesser with his 5th and 6th K, pounding the zone with a FB (88-93)/slider mix. 50 pitches/31 strikes. 1 hit, 1 walk 6 k's #Mets

Baez and Houck both down swinging. It's early but there has to be some concern with Houck. K% over 30%. First round pick shouldn't be struggling like this in Low-A ball. He was a 2 sport guy so it's possible he'll be a slow burn type.

Thankfully, this regime appears a lot better about getting minor league depth (Choi, Gamel, Brosseau, Iglesias, etc.), that they shouldn't have to trade for such replacement level players.
Pipeline
DanMetroMan : 5/2/2024 10:25 am : link
Mets: Nick Morabito, OF (No. 26)
The 2022 75th overall pick was off to a solid start for Single-A St. Lucie already but has kicked things into gear during a current seven-game hitting streak, going 14-for-24 (.583) with only three strikeouts and five steals. Morabito leads the Florida State League in average (.397), OBP (.518), OPS (1.047) and hits (27) through 20 games, and his plus-plus speed remains a weapon as well with nine thefts in 11 chances.
Troesser's
DanMetroMan : 5/2/2024 10:41 am : link
family member (I believe father) actually chimed in on twitter regarding his velocity

"Kevin Troesser
@KevinTroesser
Pitching from the windup vs. the stretch. He has not pitched from the windup since his debut this year. His velo has always been lower from the stretch, just needs to keep working on strength."

Very interesting player. To me, his ceiling is a Nimmo with speed. Obviously, not likely to reach that, but he has some serious upside.
I don't
DanMetroMan : 5/2/2024 10:51 am : link
see Nimmo ceiling unless he makes major swing changes. 63% GB rate, 510 BABIP. He's getting very, very lucky on balls in play/his legs. He has 3 homers since OD 2023, 19 total extra base hits. If he doesn't lift the ball more, his profile is more of a Tyrone Taylor than a Nimmo.
Pipeline
DanMetroMan : 5/2/2024 10:55 am : link
essentially says what I am

"Much will come down to Morabito’s bat. He didn’t expand the zone much and took a healthy amount of walks (13.3 percent) against lower-level arms, but his in-zone contact rate was a little on the concerning side despite a compact right-handed swing. He has average raw power (topping out at a 109.5 mph exit velocity at Single-A), but that has yet to emerge consistently. Luckily, he can beat out grounders to pick up hits, and considering he’s entering his age-21 season, there’s still time for the in-game pop to play."
Looks
DanMetroMan : 5/2/2024 10:58 am : link
like the Mets have decided not to release Anthony Baptist despite the fact he lied about his age

Remember Nimmo's pop was a bit unexpected. In Nimmo's age 20, A season, he played 110 games with 24 XBH. An XBH every 4.58 games vs. Morabito's XBH every 4.11 games. 2 HRs for both in that span.

Trust me, I'm not expecting a Nimmo. He's been one of the better OFs in the game the past few years, but he does have that type of upside if he can improve the swing and develop the additional pop that Nimmo did. I do agree a realistic expectation would be a good 4th OF.
Vasil's
DanMetroMan : 5/2/2024 11:02 am : link
horrible start to the season + others pitching well, he's now almost a forgotten man. Hopefully, he gets on track soon.
I
DanMetroMan : 5/2/2024 11:05 am : link
just don't yet trust the Mets to develop hitters. Their reputation has been poor in regard to doing so and can't say the early season performance by "most" of the top names is too inspiring. Baty is beginning to look like a lost case. Acuna has been disappointing, Parada has been awful etc. Morabito's has an outstanding slash line and 70 speed but unless/until he shows he can drive the ball/lift the ball he's a 4th-5th OFer (which isn't a bad outcome).
Nimmo's age 20 season stats
KDavies : 5/2/2024 11:10 am : link
Nimmo: age 20 single A: 110 games, 24 XBH, 10 SBs, 71 walks, 131 K, OPS of .756

Morabito last season and thus far this year: 78 games, 19 XBH, 32 SB, 54 walks, 71 K, OPS of .828 last year and 1.050 this year

You're comparing the wrong seasons, Morabito is 21 this season (21 next week). Nimmo at 21 hit 10 homers, 9 triples, 21 doubles. There is a reason Nimmo was a top prospect and pipeline has Morabito #26 and BA doesn't even have him top 30 and it's not because they see him having "Nimmo esque" realistic upside.
Morabito
DanMetroMan : 5/2/2024 11:14 am : link
84 professional games 3 homers, 12 doubles, 5 triples and he's one of the oldest position players on his team right now. 15 position players, nobody older than 21, 10 players 20 or younger 5 teenagers.

It's
DanMetroMan : 5/2/2024 11:20 am : link
only May, and Ramirez is off to a nice start, but seeing is believing when it comes to the Mets and swing changes. David Stearns or not, it's not like they overhauled their entire developmental department. Just using BA's list (because I have it open)

Williams- poor start (now injured)
Mauricio (out for the year)
Gilbert- poor start (now injured)
Acuna-poor start
Clifford-okay start
Houck- poor start
Parada- Has been awful
Rodriguez (hasn't debuted yet)
Ramirez- strong start
Reimer (hasn't played yet)
Baez- good start
Vargas- injured
Baro- was injured only played 2 games so far
De Oleo (yet to play)
Hernandez slow start
Rudick- poor start, though he's heating up
Lantigua- yet to play
Jordan- much like Rudick, poor start, better recently

As exciting as the pitching has been, hard to really argue the hitters have been even "solid" as a group
